SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Confirmed To Have Cut At Least Three Characters From Previous Movies

Heading into Spider-Man: No Way Home, we were besieged by rumours that various characters from the web-slinger's previous big screen outings would appear and at least a few of them have now been revealed.

Spider-Man: No Way Home featured the returns of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as their respective Peter Parker Variants and while they alluded to their lives back home, that was all we got. There was no sign of Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane, for example, and we never actually got to visit their respective worlds.

Now, we have confirmation that Dunst, Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy, and Sally Field's Aunt May were indeed once eyed to star in the $1.9 billion blockbuster.

The authors of MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, Joanna Robinson, Dave Gonzales, and Gavin Edwards, caught up with Spider-Man: No Way Home writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers and got confirmation the three women came close to making it into the movie.

"Sommers and McKenna, at various points, wrote versions of the story that incorporated Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy, Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane Watson, and Sally Field’s Aunt May, but ultimately cut all those women when they decided that the story was already overstuffed; the only female characters with significant screen time would be Marisa Tomei’s Aunt May and Zendaya's MJ."

"Because the screenplay was constantly in flux, none of the actors could read a locked script, and they joined the project based on their faith in [Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige], [Producer Amy Pascal], and director Jon Watts."

Marvel Studios definitely played fast and loose with the rules of the Multiverse in the threequel, taking the villains from their realities moments before they were killed and both Spider-Men from what appeared to be their version of the present day.

As a result, we have no idea what those cures meant for the likes of Norman Osborn and Electro, though the assumption is they ended up on branched timelines. That could, however, explain how someone like Gwen would have appeared (perhaps giving her and Peter a second chance).

Regardless, as fun as it would have been to see MJ, May, and Gwen again, there's always a chance the idea will be revisited in one of the upcoming Avengers movies or even Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse

In Spider-Man: No Way Home, for the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighbourhood hero's identity is revealed, bringing his superhero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk.

When he enlists Doctor Strange’s help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse.

The movie stars Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jon Favreau, Jacob Batalon, Marisa Tomei, J. B. Smoove, Benedict Wong, J.K. Simmons, Alfred Molina, Jamie Foxx, Willem Dafoe, Thomas Haden Church, and Rhys Ifans.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is now available to buy wherever you get your movies.

Movie script may have been in Flux, but like a fancy home cooked dinner made with a Mish mosh of ingredients, the final product was deliciouso 👨🏿‍🍳

The MSheU cut 3 prominent female characters to focus on the male protagonists? That's not very "woke" of them. Almost as if weirdos on the internet made a big deal about anti-male sexism for nothing...🤔

@UncleHarm1 - But its called Spider-man. Not Aunt May, MJ, or Gwen Stacy. Let Sony focus on those solo spin-offs lol

@UncleHarm1 - I dislike what I think is the cheap overused "MSheU" term. I think it's an irrelevant over politicized nonsense argument.

@mastakilla39 - What does this have to do with what the person said? They didn't say it should be about them.

@UncleHarm1 - It's called Spider-Man, all that needed to come across were Spider-Men and his foes.

No need to over stuff it with supporting characters.

@UncleHarm1 -
They kill off Black Widow, then proceeded to try and do a female empowerment scene with every other female hero.

In order for people to accept the horrifically written state of current female characters they need to kill off any female characters that were previously established - whether that be killing the character, removing the scenes or dismissing the notion that any popular female characters existed prior.

Remember the Disney motto: "Let the past die, kill it if you have to"

Movie was already overstuffed as is, glad they cut the unneeded crap or possibly save it for a future film.

I think they could've easily been incorporated but it would've just been cameos so what would've been the point.

Gwen coming in to be the 6th sinister 6 member as spider gwenom would've been sick. Sick as in sadistic even if it would've made no sense

To think this actually could've happened but we still don't have a live action Black cat.

Movie was just fine without them. The Spidey brotherhood was the real star of the show anyway.

Hope they paid attention. The movie decreased the estrogen, and increased in sales. Learn.

@VictorAlonzo - ....you're comparing that to one of the biggest most hyped movies of all time? What? NOTHING except maybe Secret Wars will come close to the No Way Home hype. Nothing.
ThorArms
ThorArms - 10/20/2023, 6:44 PM
@VictorAlonzo - You legitimately think that the reason No Way Home did so well was because Gwen Stacey and MJ weren't in it? My lord you're dumb

@marvel72 - Well that's nonsense in regards to quality.

Do women scare you that much? Or do you think that men are so brainless that they can only clap like trained seals because of other men?

dagenspear
dagenspear - 10/20/2023, 6:49 PM
@VictorAlonzo - That's a nonsense equation and I think you know it. No Way Home had famous title character recognition and a massive amount of nostalgia bringing in the money. That plus character and story moments selling the emotion.

@dagenspear - @ThorArms -

Are you both that stupid?

I'd rather see the characters I know, love and grew up with do amazing things on screen.

I don't want to see female versions whom I have little to no history with, or concern for, take over those roles and dilute the ones who came beforehand.

If you can't see these things happpening- good for you. I can see it, and I don't like it.

Maybe you do. Cool. If you like mediocre movie, I'm sure you'll love well written ones, made with the intended subjects at the forefront.

It's called win/win.

dagenspear - 10/20/2023, 6:56 PM
@ThorArms - Yeah, I don't know about him, but women all by themselves don't make me wanna not see something. Story, character, entertainment are usually things I tend look more for. I can engage in a story that has as many women as men. Does that mean I think Gwen would've fit in THIS story? Not necessarily. But I think they could've had a cameo that would've been fun and would've liked to see post credits scenes showing the lives of the 2 Peter's, Tobey's with Dunst's MJ and them having a daughter Mayday, maybe even Rosemary Harris' Aunt May, and a scene with Andrew's Peter where he reconnects with Sally Field's Aunt May and meets Shailene Woodley's MJ, for fun.
VictorAlonzo
VictorAlonzo - 10/20/2023, 7:02 PM
@dagenspear - which begs the question: Why is Captain Marvel not famous? Why is there a lack of nostalgia for Mz. Marvel, and the other Captain Marvel?

Why don't we get the sense of character and stories moments in the trailer?

Why aren't they selling "the emotion"?

Could it be?

No one cares??? With the director admitting that the film is silly?

I know I dgaf.
Be honest: Do you? 😐

dagenspear - 10/20/2023, 7:05 PM
@VictorAlonzo - That response that has nothing to do with decreasing estrogen leading to anything.

Most of the MCU characters are character the majority general audience has little to no history with. What you want doesn't change that and it doesn't change that that has nothing to do with Gwen and MJ being in this movie or not as no one's taking anything over or diluting anything by them existing in the movie.

You're using a strawman by assuming any of what you said applies to me or what I said.
dagenspear
dagenspear - 10/20/2023, 7:07 PM
@VictorAlonzo - I wouldn't know if they're not. I haven't watched much of the trailers for this as I don't have much interest. If it's not, I'd argue it's connected to weak writing and/or promotion.

I think Gwen could've been used, but I think it only would've served as relevant between her and Andrew Garfield's Peter within the main story.

I do think Kirsten Dunst and Sally Field, even Rosemary Harris would've worked more in showing post credits scenes of the respective Peter's back in their lives, maybe showing Tobey's Peter having a now teen daughter in Mayday and such. Maybe even get a Shailene Woodley cameo in there as Mary-Jane Watson with Peter meeting her and having a moment of recognition and maybe after liking her asking her out, as a showcase of him no longer being tormented by his past.
