SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Expected To Return To #1 Over Labor Day Weekend With So-So $6+ Million Haul

Spider-Man: No Way Home has returned to the top of the box office this Labor Day weekend, but don't expect the movie to break any records this time around. Find more details on that after the jump...

There was a lot of fanfare surrounding the "More Fun Stuff" version of Spider-Man: No Way Home when it was first announced, but that soon seemed to die off. Sony Pictures didn't start promoting the movie until very close to its release this past Thursday, and while we did get a new poster, there was no trailer or any significant marketing efforts.

Part of the reason for that may be what many fans have deemed an underwhelming extended cut. Additional scenes with Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock and the three Spider-Men were appreciated, but it wasn't quite as much as some fans thought, and a disappointing post-credits scene (along with a lot of footage already seen on TikTok hasn't really helped matters).

Despite that, Spider-Man: No Way Home is set to swing back to the #1 spot in a lacklustre Labor Day weekend at the North American box office.

Current projections from Deadline suggest the 2021 blockbuster is on track to gross $6.1 million over four days, with Top Gun: Maverick not too far behind with $5.95 million. Bullet Train, meanwhile, chugs into third place with an expected $5.875 million.

It's a shame that, when all was said and done, Sony essentially just dropped a cut of Spider-Man: No Way Home with little more than a few underwhelming deleted scenes spliced in. Fans had been hoping for something bigger, especially with behind-the-scenes photos confirming a sequence was shot with Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker battling the Green Goblin on his glider.

Perhaps we'll eventually get the "More More Fun Stuff" version? Don't bank on it.

We don't have global figures yet, but it's highly unlikely Spider-Man: No Way Home will be able to dethrone Avengers: Infinity War to top the $2 billion mark and become the fifth highest-grossing movie of all time.

So I think we can assume it won't haul in another 100 million to crack that total of 2 billion at the box office? Guess the next 2 billion movie will be Avatar 2 then

@bkmeijer1 - Guess the next 2 billion movie will be Avatar 2 then

I really don't see it coming close, but then again it's Cameron, and the first one was a juggernaut. I also expected that Maverick would be lucky to make half of what it actually ended up making, so... clearly I don't know shit.

@Kyos - same here. I expected Maverick to do a 800 million maybe, and now it's already on 1.4 billion. Guess people really wanna see Tom fly real jets.

As for Avatar, everybody and their moms seen or atleast know Avatar. Everybody knows what to expect, so it'll attract a lot of people I think. And it's indeed Cameron again, which should account for something too.

@marvel72 - It's because the last 3 MCU movies only made a combined $3.5+ billion, isn't it?

@DoubleD - What did Eternals make?

How many people watched Ms.Marvel?

She-Hulk 50% Audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Thor:Love And Thunder can make sort of good money but not a billion dollar movie, why because its crap.

@marvel72 - All the Disney Plus shows are considered a huge success based on critics and viewership.

Cult members Review Bombs at Rotten Tomatoes and YouTube don't mean crap to Disney / Marvel. Do you really think Disney and Marvel Executives are even reading or watching them?

All they look at the box office numbers and how many users are watching, and all been successful :)
