SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Is Reportedly The Current Frontrunner In Oscars' First "Fan-Favorite" Award

Despite previous reports that Cinderella was the frontrunner to win the inaugural "Fan-Favorite" award at this year's Oscars, it's now said that Spider-Man: No Way Home is once again leading the charge...

The Academy's decision to launch a "Fan-Favorite" award during this year's Oscars has been met with a mixed response. For starters, it's a glorified Twitter poll and no actual award will be handed out, with the driving force behind it seemingly being to increase the show's falling ratings.

For comic book fans upset that Spider-Man: No Way Home was snubbed in the "Best Picture" race, however, it is a shot at redemption for the movie that has grossed over $1.8 billion worldwide.

Prime Video's Cinderella was previously reported to be the clear frontrunner, but Variety now claims that the wall-crawler's latest solo outing is currently leading the charge. They're basing this on a survey of U.S. adults, so while these "results" are by no means definitive, it may bode well for the blockbuster. If nothing else, a win here will be good free promotion for its Digital and Blu-ray release.

Oscar or no Oscar, Spider-Man: No Way Home's box office success has set a record during this "pandemic era" no other movie is likely to match for some time. It was also the best-reviewed film released last year, and both of those accomplishments promise to keep the web-slinger in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a long time to come (which is the most important thing for many fans).

Tom Holland has said he wants to take a break from Peter Parker, though we're sure Sony Pictures wasted no time in signing him to a huge money deal after this latest movie's unprecedented success.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is released on Digital on March 22 and physical platforms on April 12.

I'm all for an award for popular movies, but they should just really rethink how to do it. Before you know this gets hijacked by the twitter mob again

You want people to watch the Oscars? All you have to do is get film studios to debut new trailers during the commercials. Most viewership comes from YouTube and social media, anyway. Debuting them during the Oscars, instead of the Superbowl would only help the industry.

And don't do this popularity Oscar thing. We already know which movies are popular.

If you want to try something interesting, have the announcers appear as the characters they play in their movies. Let the actors...I don't know...act? Could make for some great comedy. Just thinking out loud here. There are plenty of creative ways to get people to watch. Let set designers build a set for the venue (or even just the stage). Show one or two of the year's best short films. Use the event to announce new films (for those studios who don't have "events" or conventions).

Any of those things would be interesting.

Should of just nominated it instead of the academy again acting too high and mighty. They tried this with Black Panther too.

“Here, we’ll just create a new award for you stupid plebs”

At least they didn’t get away with it with Black Panther. And they wonder why no one watches them.

@MrDandy - when will they realize including comic book movies into the actual categories will increase the amount of viewers for their dumb awards.

They've introduced this award purely to give NWH something, so it'd be really great if it didn't win

As exceptional a movie as NWH is, I hope Cinderella wins. For the fun of seeing how the Academy responds and reacts, and what they do next.

Regardless of Oscars Spider-Man No Way Home wins best film of the year. Best actor, best supporting actor… etc.

While I want to see Spider-Man: No Way Home get all the accolades it deserves, there is NO WAY I'm sitting through 4 hours of The Oscars to see it. It's obvious this is a ploy to drive up the TV ratings or to meet fans half-way by giving a basically "participation" award to a popular film. This isn't the People's Choice Awards this is the Oscars. And if the powers that be truly believed No Way Home deserved an Oscar, they would have given it a legitimate nomination. They didn't so I have no interest in The Oscars feeble attempts to bolster the ratings of their awards program. This made-up award is solely to placate fans. This is an embarrassment for all those involved.

Also, while other artistic awards are being subjected to being presented off-screen, you know The Oscars is going to play Tom Holland's team crossing the stage as a huge highlight of the show to accept this award. And it isn't even a real Oscar.
