SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Star Andrew Garfield Explains Why The Movie Doesn't Need A "Best Picture" Oscar

The Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield has finally opened up about Spider-Man: No Way Home's "Best Picture" snub at the Oscars, explaining why he doesn't think that's something the movie needs...

Spider-Man: No Way Home arrived in theaters last December, earning widespread critical acclaim and breaking countless box office records. Despite that, the Sony Pictures/Marvel Studios blockbuster failed to earn any serious awards recognition, with many fans left fuming that the Academy decided to snub the movie for "Best Picture" at this year's Oscars.

There's a strong chance the threequel will win the (mostly meaningless) "Fan Favorite" award as voted on by fans through social media, but how does star Andrew Garfield feel about this apparent snub? He's nominated for "Best Actor" for his work in tick, tick... Boom!, and while he chose his words carefully, the British actor believes the response from moviegoers is ultimately more than enough.

"I don't know," he initially responded when asked for his take on Spider-Man: No Way Home's unsuccessful Oscar campaign. "I mean, it's the sixth biggest movie in the history of movies. Making a film that a gajillion people want to see together is a miracle. Making a film that an awarding body loves is also a miracle. Sometimes those miracles overlap, and sometimes they don't. But I personally feel pretty satisfied with the audience response. I think that's plenty."

A movie making a lot of money doesn't automatically make it eligible for an Academy Award, but as the best-reviewed title of 2021, it's mind-blowing to see the blockbuster get overlooked. Well, in some respects. Unfortunately, the Academy ignoring anything even remotely superhero-related is the norm.

As for Garfield, we're certainly wishing him all the luck in the world this weekend, as he's an underrated talent who definitely appears to be bouncing back after a quiet couple of years.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is available on Digital now and hits physical platforms on April 12.

I think the oscars are due for reassessment, but not necessarily in this direction

Come on guys, this is a reasonable sentiment. The films a mega hit. Did it really need to win the best picture Oscar? I don't think so.

@KingLeonidas - Apparently it does because despite being the biggest franchise in history, and likely to stay that way forever because of the sheer number of successful films, for some reason fans of these movies are still ultra-insecure whenever someone criticizes or "snubs" these movies. Even though they themselves don't even have a stake in whether or not these movies are successful. And even though the people making these movies sure as shit don't care themselves.

At this point the Oscars need NWH more than NWH needs the Oscars.

I do understand people behind the scenes wanting the recognition of award shows but cmon you got the recognition of the world. It's like 11 people that watches the Oscar's at this point let them have it.

It doesn’t need a best picture nomination because….. it was a bad script.

It doesn't deserve a best pic nom. Being ridiculousy digestible doesn't mean your film is Citizen Kane.

What the Oscars is about and what Marvel is about are two very different things and I personally would like it to stay that way.

As I said in another article about this, Marvel Studios has built its legacy without the need of an outdated TV awards show. This film in itself has built a legacy. Why is that not enough?
