SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Star Andrew Garfield (Mostly) Dodges Question About The Movie's Oscar Snub

Spider-Man: No Way Home star Andrew Garfield was recently asked about the movie being snubbed at this year's Academy Awards, but deftly avoided the question by sharing what he loves about the blockbuster.

Spider-Man: No Way Home opened to overwhelmingly positive reviews (Rotten Tomatoes named it their best-reviewed title of 2021), and earned the sort of money at the box office studios have only been able to dream of since the pandemic began. Despite being credited with saving theaters, none of that was good enough for the Academy, and the movie has been snubbed at the Oscars.

While No Way Home winning "Best Picture" was always unlikely, the lack of even a nomination hurt a lot of comic book fans. The Amazing Spider-Man actor, Andrew Garfield, recently appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live and was asked head-on about the Marvel Studios/Sony Pictures being overlooked at the awards show.

Unfortunately, Garfield - who received a "Best Actor" nomination for tick, tick...BOOM! - mostly dodged the question. Instead, he praised director Jon Watts and highlighted some memorable moments!

"It’s a great movie. Jon Watts is an incredible director. He pulled together all these different stories and strands and didn’t make it feel cynical. He made it feel totally heartfelt and important," the actor explained. "And the other thing I love is like, I love this idea of destiny and the idea that if neither Toby’s nor my Peter Parkers had landed in that particular universe, in Tom Holland’s universe, then he might have lost his MJ, if I wasn’t there to catch her."

"And he might have gone down a dark path if Tobey wasn’t there to kind of appeal to his better angels. I love that," Garfield concluded. "The idea that we were called in there for a specific mentoring, brotherhood kind of reason. That’s just beautiful to me."

Garfield not slating the Academy weeks before what could be the biggest awards win of his career isn't a surprise, so we don't hold it against him. Someone who hasn't shied away from taking aim at them, however, is Samuel L. Jackson (you can read his thoughts here).

@Waddles - Smith was EXCELLENT. Some of the best work he has done in a long time. It seems like it's his "YOU OWE ME" year. Like when Denzel got his for Training Day after they snubbed him for Malcolm X and Hurrican Carter.

I think its arguable he deserved it for Pursuit of Happyness. Screw the Oscars anyway lol

@Waddles - he’s really good in the movie but his accent came on a little strong, especially after hearing interviews with the actual dude.

However this will probably be a case of the award actually honoring the actors entire 30+ year career.

NWH was a really fun movie. But it's not Oscar worthy. Lol

@KWilly - this line of thinking is why the Oscar’s kind of suck now.

@MrDandy - Well, I don't watch the Oscar's to begin with. But I'd much rather put The Batman on that pedestal than NWH. It was the better film imo

@KWilly - the Batman is overrated trash. Easily shot down by NWH in every way. Its not even close

@MrDandy - The Oscars suck because they only give nominations to movies they think deserve it? What the **** do you want them to do?

@MyCoolYoung - you don’t hear those people so much anymore after he knocked it out of the park with No Way Home.

@MrDandy - it's still a small vocal minority. I was reading stuff like "the direction wasn't special the film is all nostalgia" etc but yea they definitely quieted some doubters for sure

@MrDandy - Any random film student could have directed No Way Home. So yeah, I'll still be saying the same for Watts. About as generic as it gets, I hate that Spidey is stuck with him.

Honestly they should be talking about Tick, Tick…Boom! As an Oscar snub. One of the best movies of the year. At least Garfield got the best actor nomination. In my opinion he should win it, but it’ll likely go to Smith.

What is it with you guys and needing your love of these flicks validated by an Academy you claim to care so little for in the first place? Spider-Man was good but for [frick]’s sake, Best Picture worthy? Hardly. It was an enjoyable slice of blockbuster fun and nothing more. Well-constructed from a story perspective, yes, but nothing else about it calls for anything more than a “yeah that was pretty good”.

I'm at a point were I think the whole snub talk is pointless or even does more harm, not because I don't think No Way Home is "Oscar worthy" (I always found that argument dumb, especially when it was pointed towards films that the Academy itself nominated), but because it might actually benefit the show. I get that the point is to highlight how out of touch the Academy is with audiences, but at the same time, by complaining about "getting snubbed at the Oscars", we are validating the prestige of this silly awards TV show. No Way Home - heck, the MCU as whole - has been forming its own legacy without the help of an outdated TV show. Why is that so bad?
