SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Star Willem Dafoe Reveals Whether He Would Return As Green Goblin

After making a memorable comeback in Spider-Man: No Way Home as the Green Goblin, Willem Dafoe has shared his thoughts on potentially playing Norman Osborn again in a future project. Check it out...

Spider-Man: No Way Home brought back a number of familiar villains from the franchise's past, but despite playing only a very minor role in the threequel's marketing campaign, Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin was quickly established as the lead villain.

Intent on making this newfound reality his own, the unhinged Norman Osborn initially earned Peter Parker's trust before his true nature made itself known. After pushing the wall-crawler to his limits and killing Aunt May, Spider-Man and the Goblin squared off at the Statue of Liberty in a battle that very nearly saw the teenager dole out lethal justice to his foe.

Thanks to the Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man's timely intervention, Peter instead chose to cure Osborn, with the now-sane villain eventually returning to his own world.

During the course of this adventure, it was confirmed that the MCU doesn't have a Norman Osborn or Oscorp, but that doesn't mean Dafoe couldn't one day return, right?

In a recent interview with Inverse, the Spider-Man star ruled nothing out. "If everything was right, sure," he told the site. "I mean, that's a great role. I liked the fact that it's a double role both times. Twenty years ago, and fairly recently, both times [were] very different experiences, but I had a good time on both."

While some fans were disappointed that the Goblin spent very little time wearing his mask, Dafoe's facial expressions were ultimately all that was needed to sell the villain as a truly terrifying force of nature. In fact, we'd go so far as to say it was one of the best superhero movie performances in recent memory.

Unfortunately, even in the midst of the Multiverse Saga, we don't necessarily anticipate seeing Norman again. Sony might attempt to convince Dafoe to reprise the role in one of their upcoming movies, but it's hard to picture there being room for him in Spider-Man 4 or even something like Avengers: Secret Wars!

Do you think Dafoe's Green Goblin could have a future in the MCU?

If there was a way for Dafoe to cross over to MCU reality and permanently be the Osborne for that universe, I wouldn’t complain.

He's so cool, a bit gremlin looking but still cool

Kinda want fresh blood for a newer Goblin in the MCU. I don't really like Fiege's stance that some of these villains that made their debut simply can't be recast again because of how great they were in the role. If you want to go the MCU variant route cool but these guys are getting pretty old.

LOVE me some Dafoe though.

He should play a Joker variant.

@gtabreaker - I know Dafoe as Joker is the most popular fan cast, but I want to see him in the DCU as Jason Woodrue/Floronic Man in the Swamp Thing movie.

He could be a mycologist studying a strange fungus that grows in the swamp. When Woodrue is infected by the fungus, it is similar to a melanoma that spreads throughout his body.

@Repian - I do not know this character.

He was a highlight of No Way Home but I’d still like to see the MCU take on the character.

I did want a new Osbourne, but Dafoe came back in top form, had a better dynamic with Holland than he ever did Maguire, and killed it with pure and utter finesse.

I’m good now. Dafoe is GOATED.

Enough with the Marvel Geriatric Universe, cast new people already.

Defoe as Norman is always a great addition to a Spider-Man film.
But if we’re bringing in Osbourne for Tom Holland’s Spider-Mans Sonyverse then I’d like to see someone new and instead of Goblin have him do the evil Iron Patriot story arc.

@slickrickdesigns - I think the question that nobody likes to ask themselves is, do we need a Norman now? Why introduce a Norman just for the sake of it when the likelihood of another Norman having the same emotional impact on this Peter is slim to none? Another Doc Ock, that makes sense. You have the chance to make him really evil. But another Norman just seems redundant now.

@PlusUltra - Literally the point of No Way Home was to acknowledge that everyone watches ALL Spidey films, not just the MCU ones - and because of that there's no need to repeat villains and storylines - something the Spidey movies have RARELY ever done (literally the only villain they ever repeated was Harry Osborn Green Goblin, and arguably Venom). Marvel isn't chasing to have their Peter be the definitive comic adaptation when all three Spideys together represent the whole sum of their stories.

Long story short, the MCU isn't interested in rebooting Green Goblin, Doc Ock, or anyone else. We still have Kraven, Hobgoblin, Black Cat, Chameleon, Tombstone, Mister Negative, the Spider Slayers, and ample opportunity to bring back Shocker, Scorpion, Rhino, the Prowler, Kingpin, and maybe even Carnage.

I will say we missed the boat on Sinister Six however. If it didn't happen in No Way Home, I don't know another good way of juggling six villains in a movie.

@PlusUltra - that’s why I think Iron Patriot Norman works… it would be a different type of Norman. Someone acting more like Lex Luther than Jekyll and Hyde. But I get you.

I'm all for getting the MCU variants of the classic villains

But Dafoe was somehow BETTER in NWH than he even was in SM1. His acting is aging like a fine wine. I can't complain here !

Just to repeat my go to line on articles like this - NWH didn't confirm there's no Norman variant within the MCU, just that Oscorp doesn't exist. It could very easily be the case that in the MCU Oscorp couldn't compete with Stark Industries and went bust long ago, and MCU Norman is off doing his own thing somewhere else.

Anyways, I'd love to see Willem Dafoe return, but I'd want him to be the MCU version of Norman this time and do something different with the role, rather than play the Raimi version again. I don't think it'll happen but I'd be very happy if it did. Maybe they could take a cue from the video games and have Norman run for mayor, or maybe with Stark Industries out of the picture he could fill that void with OsCorp. It'd also be cool if they did something different with the Goblin to really set it apart.

Yeah, it is a great role for him. Lots of scenery for him to chew on, which makes it fun to watch him in the role.
