SPIDER-MAN Star Tom Holland Gets Candid About His Struggles With Alcohol: "It Really Scared Me"

Tom Holland (Spider-Man: No Way Home, Uncharted) has opened up about his struggles with alcohol in a new interview, explaining what ultimately led to him giving up completely after a "Dry January."

Earlier this year, Spider-Man: No Way Home star Tom Holland revealed that he'd been sober for over 12 months after deciding to give up alcohol completely, and the actor has now elaborated on his struggles with booze and what ultimately led to him cutting it out of his life.

During an appearance on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast (via Variety), Holland candidly spoke about coming to the realization that he may have become reliant in alcohol after doing "Dry January" (a tradition in the UK and Ireland) following a "very boozy" December.

“All I could think about was having a drink. It really scared me,” he said about giving up the sauce for one month. “I just was like, ‘Wow, maybe I have a little bit of an alcohol thing.'”

“I felt like I couldn’t be social,” Holland continued. “I felt like I couldn’t go to the pub and have a lime soda. I couldn’t go out for dinner. I was really, really struggling. I started to really worry that maybe I had an alcohol problem.”

Holland then decided to keep going, extending his dry spell for another few months until his birthday, but by the time the date arrived, he felt he no longer needed to go back on the drink.

“[I was] the happiest I’ve ever been in my life. I could sleep better. I could handle problems better. Things that would go wrong on set, that would normally set me off, I could take in my stride. I had such better mental clarity. I felt healthier, I felt fitter… I just sort of said to myself, like, ‘Why? Why am I enslaved to this drink? Why am I so obsessed by the idea of having this drink?'”

Holland recently announced his plan to take some time off after a particular intense time filming Apple TV+ drama The Crowded Room, but he is expected to reprise the role of Peter Parker in the MCU at some point, and has confirmed that Spider-Man 4 discussions did take place prior to the WGA strike putting everything on pause.

And he's exactly right. Refreshing seeing someone with his influence say this stuff out loud

I'm no alcoholic per say but I have the exact same struggles. Drinking is such an accepted social activity. Yet fitness is important to me. I'm completely fine not drinking on a weekend but then there's a party or a wedding or whatever and the social pressure is there. Then I hate it after I do it. And it completely eliminates my gains. Have a few half marathons and marathons coming up and its devastated my training this summer. (90 degree days also don't help)

But anyways thank you Tom for speaking the truth

Glad to hear this. Was in the same boat around his age. Did dry Jan and now it's been 5 years. It's mad here in Ireland that it's practically expected that you drink at any gathering. From babies birthdays to communions.

@BigPhilbowski - I imagine it's super ingrained in Irish culture. My wife is part Irish so I'm well aware there. But it's the same way in America. We have breweries popping up every week in Pennsylvania. It's not only socially accepted, but also encouraged to drink. If my Baptist family were not so against drinking, I might see nothing wrong with drinking every weekend. But I know depending on your upbringing and environment can influence how you view alcohol

@Vigor - yeah man it's just crazy when you take a step back and look at it. Like from I'd say 18 to 24 there was barely a week went by that me and my friends didn't go out for at least 1 pint every single night. And what's worse is no one thought there was anything wrong with it. And it's still the same way with that age group in Ireland today. It's not only approved, it's almost encouraged. Glad to see the likes of Holland speaking publicly about it and before he hit a point where he needed rehab

@BigPhilbowski - yeah, my 19 to 26 years also were way more excessive than they should be. I have friends who had hard times because of it.

Alcohol is literal poison. There are such few health benefits and the long list of health detriments override them. Plus it’s just empty calories that make many people fat.

That being said, there is a benefit to occasionally having a couple of drinks in a social situation. If a person is healthy enough, the health detriments of the occasional imbibing don’t hurt too much.

But it takes a lot of discipline to not let it get out of hand. Such an incredible amount of people over consume these days. I’ve limited myself to never more than 2 drinks at a time and only in very specific social situations. It’s worked out better for me in my life.

@mountainman - with how bad alcohol is for you I have a heard time believing the benefits. I feel like there are a few peer reviewed studies but they don't do a whole lot of research on it.

@mountainman - i literally work out 3-5days a week and eat healthy Mon-Friday just so i can drink on Friday/Saturday and not totally feel like a fat worthless lug. it's such a love hate relationship. personally i could go a few weekends without drinking, but my fiancé is so stressed from work every day that she likes to relax and drink socially. I don't mind it but it kills my wallet and just wish a weekend or two she wouldn't.

Anyways... good on Tom for admitting and quitting it.

@MyCoolYoung - The health benefits are quite minimal. Some elements of red wine are good, and beer can be good in some situations due to the yeast proteins in it.

But that stuff isn’t really anything you can’t get anywhere else. It’s really just how much you want to tolerate the downsides in your life.
mountainman
mountainman - 7/11/2023, 4:58 PM
@MotherGooseUPus - I hear you there. I used to be like that too. Now that I drink much less, the health benefits for me are even more.

And yeah the wallet can get you too. If you drink frequently, it can be scary to add up how much you pay at the end of the year. I prefer premium stuff - good craft beers, nice scotches, and quality red wines. Since I don’t drink often, it’s fine, but when I used to drink more it could get pricey.
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 7/11/2023, 7:34 PM
@mountainman - literally. You can get resveratal from fruit without the wine, which they always say get it from the wine. There’s a lot of wicked games being played with peoples health

Respect to him for having the strength to confront and defeat his inner demons. I was never much of a drinker but in the early 2000s I did get hooked on pain pills cause of a bad back injury. Thankfully I was able to kick that habit and get the right kind of help to heal my back. 👍🙏

I only drink one night a week, but it would usually be a fair few either in the pub or at home. I look forward to it, but wouldn't say I'd miss it too much if I did give it up... but then I've never tried! Did Dry Jan a few times, but that was easy enough cos I always knew it was just short term.

I see people having fun at his expense, and I get it. Smaller site, Tom will never see it. Anonymity and what not. All fun and games. He's rich who cares, Ha ha. But alcoholism is real. I never experienced it but it runs deep especially on my dad's side of the family. I have had friends and associates barely hold their lives together because of the stuff. It goes from having fun in your college years to nudging it's way into everyday life to the point some feel as though they can't function without it.

Good for him. I gave up drinking before I even turned 21. I just realized it wasn't for me and I was doing it to be around friends. I don't condemn anyone for drinking, but i wish more black people knew the dangers of it. They market that shit way too much to us and liquor stores on almost every corner in urban.
mountainman
mountainman - 7/11/2023, 5:02 PM
@MyCoolYoung - Great point. I’d say booze tend to be marketed to lower income folks across the board. Lots of alcoholic poor whites and hispanics out there too.

It’s weird how it is marketed. Remember during the pandemic when everything was shut down but liquor stores could stay open?
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 7/11/2023, 7:31 PM
@mountainman - oh I remember and that was weirdddd. Liquor stores, drug stores, and gas stations the essentials? But true. They are marketed to lower income people more than others but always got a celebrity face on it. Since I’m always the sober one I noticed there’s a new it drink every year and they’re always overcharging for them

My drinking days came to an end at age 19, two years before I was of legal drinking age!
I got tired of not only the hangovers, but the stories of what happened "last night" that I didn't remember because I was black out drunk!
This past April was 39 years...!☮
