SPIDER-MAN: Tom Holland Regrets Not Reaching Out To Andrew Garfield After He Replaced Him As Peter Parker

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was released to mostly negative reviews in 2014 and, after Sony Pictures invested too much money in the sequel, it was deemed a box office disappointment despite grossing over $700 million worldwide. 

There was some online scuttlebutt about Andrew Garfield potentially upsetting Sony execs in Japan after missing a dinner, but when Sony Pictures decided to team with Marvel Studios, the decision was made to recast the actor. So, when Captain America: Civil War rolled around, Tom Holland was the MCU's Peter Parker. 

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Holland - who shared the screen with Garfield in Spider-Man: No Way Home - admitted he has some regrets about the way he handled taking over the role from his predecessor. 

"I was 19 when I got cast. I was so caught up in getting the role that I never took any time to think about what it must have been like for him," the actor says. "If I’d made my second movie and it didn’t necessarily deliver in the way it should have done and they recast me, I would really struggle to bounce back."

"Andrew bounced back in the most unbelievable way. I just wish I’d called him and just said, 'You know I can’t turn down this opportunity.'"

Holland says he was able to make things right with Garfield on the set of No Way Home and a bond has now formed between them and Tobey Maguire which has had unexpected consequences...a group chat with a wholly appropriate name!

"We have a great group chat and we catch up every now and then. It’s called the Spider-Boys," he reveals. "I was doing a charity event in London for the Brothers Trust and I was asking if they would be so kind as to sign a poster to auction off. They were obviously happy to oblige."

As for what else they discuss, all Holland would say is, "Spider-Man stuff."
