The success of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 can't be understated. It was the second-highest grossing film of 2004 (just under Shrek 2), had the biggest opening day of all time, won an Oscar for visual effects, and is still considered to be one of the greatest films that the genre has to offer.
Much of its success can be contributed to its screenplay, written by the late Alvin Sargent. However, he was not the first person brougt on to pen the sequel. David Koepp, writer of the first film, was hired to write the follow up shortly after the first film's success back in 2002.
His script, titled THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, shares many similiairites with the real Spider-Man 2, but it is a very different film. Doctor Octopus has a connection with Peter's parents (its similar to what we saw in the 2012 reboot with the Lizard), Harry & Jameson offer $10 million for the identity of Spider-Man, and Peter begins to date his classmate Gwen Stacy by the end. We even get a brief Eddie Brock cameo, likely setting up his appearance for a later film.
While we knew Koepp's script was later rewritten by Michael Chabon (and later rewritten again by both Raimi & Sargent), his story has mostly been kept under wraps. That is, until he posted four different drafts of his screenplay on his website not long ago.
