Fantasy or Fact: Does Doc Ock Have Steel Jaw?

Can Doctor Otto Octavius take a punch from a guy with the proportionate strength of a spider?

This question bothers me and the people best suited to answer this question of course are my fellow CBM aficionados. I will try to answer the question myself but I know there will always be a bigger geek out there.

The scenario in the movie Spider-Man 2: Peter Parker, who we all know is our Friendly Neighborhood Spider-man, is on top of a speeding train, having a slugfest with his eight-limbed nemesis Dr. Octopus. We know that Spidey has the proportionate strength of a spider, which translates that he should be superhumanly strong; this is because his strength was enhanced when a genetically engineered spider bit him. In the other corner, Doc Ock was bonded with four mechanical arms due to an experiment gone wrong, if I remember correctly never was it stipulated in the movie that this incident gave him super-strength. This is where my dilemma comes in, Spider-man from the looks of things is really swing some heavy punches and hard kicks. Doc Ock is receiving some of these to his body and face. I love watching boxing and solid punches like those should have dropped Doc Ock (I am running with the notion that Doc Ock has no enhanced strength).

So, HELP can somebody explain this “logically” to me (this means I appreciate it if nobody reasons out that it was that way only because Raimi thought it looks cool).

My personal thought on this is that Spider-man just held his punches, but I think that would be ridiculous, considering he has to save the people in the train and he doesn’t have time to waste.

This is the time where I defer to you guys and your learned opinions. You know where to write them. vvv

I think it's just supposed to be assumed that Spidey was holding back so as not to knock his head clean off! But then you could argue that he should have at least delivered a knock out punch. Ock may have also gained a certain level of stamina and ferocity due to being rendered completely insane. I dunno, in the grand scheme of things though, doe sit really matter that much? It was a great movie.

I think this is what we call 'dramatic license' which is a perfectly acceptable thing to do in a film where the main character gets his powers having been bitten by a spider.

Do we want to see Doc Ock get punched in the moosh by spidey? YES!

Do we want to see the film end at that point with the Docs head coming clean off? No!

Lol I've always thought that too. This man can stop a train with his strength, and Doc Ock can stand toe to toe in hand to hand combat? Naw. I can understand Goblin, Sandman, Venom, but not this guy lol

Still a great scene if you ignore that though lol.

What isn't told here is that doc Ock was bitten by a radioactive octopus after he gained the arms. This caused him to gain super strength to handle the punches. It's also how he knew when to duck ring before that bridge, octopuss senses!

I thought it could be that the mechanical arms have something to do with that. You know, when they showed that the chip fused with his nervous system, which probably cause him to feel no pain. Idk if this is accurate, but you can always take that as an excuse. :P

I think someone who I talked to before explained this to me, and it made more sense to me than how I explained it. lol

Wouldn't it have been the fight coreographer that decides where the punches go not the director (Sam Raimi), who every one is trying to blame it on.

@GreenieGobbie: It doesn't matter if he doesn't feel pain. His jaw would still break he just wouldn't have felt it.

This is actually the one that bothers me the most. You live with some other moments in other films, but for some reason this one sticks with me. Like, how did the clock fight not break his arms or kill him either. I don't know, I guess like the others you kind of live with this.

This was actually the topic in the Amazing Spider-Man books, I think in late 2009. Ock had severe damage to his skull, they showed the x-rays with the pictures of Spidey, Daredevil and Punisher beating the crap out of him...was really cool! :-)
