After Viewing The Amazing Spider-Man 2, I am ready to acknowledge that our beloved hero has been tarnished with Marc Webb's and Sony's money grubbing, mess of a rebooted franchise SPOILERS AHEAD

DISCLAIMER: I am not biased against any movie studio, comic book origin, or production. I enjoy comic book movies for what they are, and always look for the best in any movie.

 

First off by letting this be known that I originally had hope for this franchise. As well all know, Spider-Man is one of the most cherished characters of all time. Whether you were reading about him in his first comic book appearance in 1962, or singing the theme song to his hit 1967 animated television show, or even destroying a large tub of pop corn to the 2002 blockbuster movie, you cannot resist the appeal to the friendly neighborhood spiderman. Sam Raimi’s original trilogy, well at least the first two, set a brand new precedent to not only expect when watching a superhero movie, but for the action genre as a whole. When news first broke out that Marc Webb and Sony would be putting out a reboot of the franchise just 5 years later, many fans were skeptical of what to expect. Now in 2014, Marc Webb has put out two more Spider-Man films starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone that tarnish the franchise. And with news breaking today that we have to wait two more years for a solo Sinister Six movie, and four more for a third film, it’s time to bash Webb for destroying a franchise of our beloved hero.

 

After viewing the first Amazing Spider-Man, I came out with very mixed emotions. Although the plot wasn’t very well put together, and at times the story felt very twilight-esque, I came out with some hope for a brighter future. For one, the casting was spot on as Garfield portrays a fantastic Peter Parker, and Stone’s charm as Gwen Stacy is more than perfect. Also, they showed the potential with some a deep storyline with Peter’s parents, a shrouded mystery of Oscorp, what villains could we see in future installments, and arguably the most underrated aspect of the film, the improved fighting style of Spider-Man that consisted of crazy agility and brute strength. When it was time for the sequel to roll around quickly, I had faith that all of these possibilities would be met....

 

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was the first Spider-Man film that I did not see in theaters, and nor was I not the only one. The Amazing-Spider Man 2 was the lowest earning film in franchise history, and after viewing it I see why so. The trailers played the film out to answer all of the questions I wanted to know. Would we finally see a sinister six? Will we know what happened to his parents? How cool will all of these villains be? Instead, I wound up on a disintegrated plot that had a random assortment of villains that just did not work. Between Jamie Foxx’s poorly written Electro, whose powers I still cannot accurately describe, or the Rhino’s 5 minute lame appearance that’s hard to take seriously with Paul Giamatti, or the complete slap in the face to the mythology of the Green Goblin with a horrible Green Goblin, Marc Webb sucked the soul out of some of the greatest superhero villains ever. The only positive aspect of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was the chemistry behind Garfield and Stone, and that too even came to an close with the films dramatic death. 

 

At the end of the Amazing Spider-Man 2 they tease what’s to come from the Sinister Six, but to be frankly honest, I don’t care anymore. Now that news broke the other day that the Sinister Six comes out in 2016 , and then the Amazing Spider-Man 3 in 2018, I have officially thrown this franchise, Marc Webb, and Sony out the door. To help put this in perspective: Sony plans on bringing us a Sinister Six movie without Spider-Man even in it, and then bring him back to the screen when Garfield is 35 years old! Thanks for the effort, but this franchise is dead to me.

I’d like to end this rant by thanking Marc Webb for destroying one of our favorite superhero’s potential in striking the big screen like Spider-Man did with Raimi. Webb and Sony, you’re ignorance to keep things simple and strive for money over pleasure will not be ignored. F**k you Marc Webb and Sony, and hand Spider-Man’s film rights over to Marvel on a silver platter before you destroy it even more.

Remember when The Amazing Spider-Man was supposed to be a lower budgeted ($70-90 mil) film that was supposed to be more intimate and focus more on Peter and Gwen? It would have been different than what we usually expect in a comic-book movie, but no, Sony saw the $750 mil gross from TASM and the success of The Avengers and decided to fast-track everything

You forgot to mention the horrible dialogue. I mean the way they talk while others talk trying to make it realistic, but ending up incomprehensible and anoying.

Um... nope. Wasn't the best Spider-Man movie, but it wasn't the catastrophe everyone claims it is either. There were some bad parts (e.g. Gwen's on-the-nose speech that was absolutely obvious foreshadowing, and Paul Giamatti's acting as Rhino), but there was also some great stuff in there (Peter discovering the truth about his parents, the Clocktower fight, Peter's mourning montage, Electro's arc, etc.)

And I still don't get why people are bemoaning the hint at a Rhino battle at the end of the movie - it's basically like how Scarecrow popped up in The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, simply showing that the hero has a lot of work to do. Same with Jamie Foxx as Max Dillon - everyone complains about how "goofy" or "weird" he was, but the guy was lonely, mistreated by everyone and without a single friend or person who cared about him; then someone saves his life, and he realises someone does care, but he doesn't know how to deal with it, so he goes overboard. It's actually pretty tragic if you bother to try and sympathise with the guy, rather than focusing on his superficial eccentricities.

TASM 2 is one of the better movies in the Spider-Man franchise, certainly not one of the worst. TASM is still the best for me, because I appreciated the smaller, more intimate tone, and think they would've done better to keep that going a little bit in TASM 2, but I still think TASM 2 was a good movie in its own right.

It's all [frick]ing Avi Arad. He doesn't give a crap about the characters and just wants money. Yeah I know that's why movies are made and everyone wants money, but his ultimate goal is to have films grossing the same amount as Avengers and Iron Man 3. To get that you have to have multiple, consistently good films and then give your big grand slam.

Also they need to give Marc Webb creative control again. Like people have said the movie lost the intimate feel that it had and I want that back. Also they don't need to have a 'Cinematic Universe'. Frequent spin-offs are fine, but I barely see how that works considering every freaking Spidey related character lives in New York. Yeah it's big, but it's not like he Manhattan and Brooklyn (for arguments sake) are two different countries.

The only reason I'm looking forward to S6 is because Drew Goddard (A Joss Whedon underling) is writing and directing. Hopefully Alex Kurtzman leaves Spidey 3 like Orci did. Get some real writers up in this piece!!!

btw, Marc Webb is probably the hero of that franchise. It could have been a disaster if Arad's ideas were on the hands of a lesser director.

i personally dont get the hate, sure there are some cliche moments, but there aint many movies that dont have them, but overall i think these are really good, the main problem is they are compaired to raimis all the time, they both have problems both sets that is, i grew tired of maguires spiderman and thought it had not aged well and was far too campy..

having a little boy hes really into spiderman and i have to endure them practically everyday and after not seeing them initially for a while i actually enjoy them, well the first 2 anyways....

with webbs spiderman the only issue i really have is the whole MURICA thing like the crane part at the end of the first one, though it gives some good shots its just cringeworthy,though raimis train scene and you mess with one of us you mess with all of us is just as bad. i wasnt a fan of the lizards look either nor some of the plot holes left by him but minor problems really, second movie wise my only real gripe was not enough norman and not enough gobby, i was really not looking forward to the enemies judging by the trailers but watching the final product i was overly satisified, again just the cringeworthy part at the end with the little kid, but the rhino tease was good....

and the death of gwen even though through spoilers i knew it was coming still gave me a shout out loud OH SHIT!!! moment....

i think we will see the end of this trilogy and it will be rebooted again even sooner than it was this time and i think thats when we are going to see a spiderman everyone can love, but until then these movies will have to do.

Question, you say you didn't see the film at the cinema so how exactly did you watch it because it isn't out on DVD or Blu-ray yet.

The thing I don't understand is how EVERYONE can bash the Amazing Spider-man films and yet cheer on the X-Men films. I personally think Amazing Spider-man 2 & X-Men DOFP were on par with each other when it comes to both quality film and comic book accuracy. I felt many things done in DOFP were not only untrue to the comic but untrue to the films that came before it. Yet X-Men DOFP got rave reviews while everyone bashed he crap out of Spider-man. And the Spidey bashing wasn't even over the same things in each article. One person complained that you barley got to see Rhino or Green Goblin in the film while another review complained that there were too many villains in the movie and that took time away from Electro. Then you have one article upset that its not true enough to the comic and none of the villains look like they do in the 616 comics while at the same time another article complaining that they killed off Gwen Stacy, they did that in a way that was taken directly from the comic.

All the while people complain about Amazing Spider-man, they rave about X-Men as they change Shadowcats powers, Wolverine has bone claws, has adamantium claws, has bone claws, has adamantium claws, & some how Magentos powers of Magnetism allows him to control computers inside the Sentinels and operate their systems. All the while plot holes keep forming because Bryan Singer decide that X-Men 3 & X-Men Origins: Wolverine just were too inconvenient for him to take into account... you know until the end of the film.

I didn't think Amazing Spider-man nor X-Men DOFP were good enough to make my top five comic book movies, and to be honest... after seeing Guardians of the Galaxy, neither X-Men nor Spider-man make it in the top two Superhero movies this summer.

I just wish someone could explain to me using valid examples from both movies why X-Men DOFP is "The Best X-Men Film EVER" while Amazing Spider-man 2 has "Destroyed the Spider-Man franchise".

Amen to that, CapDc. BUT don't forget that Webb's biggest fault is saying Yes to producers stupid suggestions and he did everything he was told to.

I mean he wanted to bring a bit more realistic tone to the franchise and justifie the use of 3D by making Spidey's person of view scenes. Guess what? POV scenes were cut but at least we had practical stunts with stuntman swinging without a CGI.

Look at TASM 2 , none of it was left just to appeal to youngsters. A lots of colors were added and fights were cut down to make it more kid friendly.

Ray release for free that would be illegal in the some countries? Also their are torrents and pirating movies. (Goody two shoes!!!)

I'm more disappointed in the direction the films are going than the films themselves. Liked the first one a lot and the second one was ok ( had really good parts and really bad) but I hate how the rushed the Green Goblin and how they're gonna do a sinister six film. I think when we all heard they were gonna do sinister six we were excited to see spider-man take them on in a Spidey movie not see a movie where we see six villains come together and what hang out. They need to focus on building the Spidey universe with in Spider-man films not real ease villain spin offs. We'll see what happens. I was looking forward to seeing Norman as Goblin too but who knows when that will be

@dethpillow sure Max's design was a bit heavy handed with the comb-over and stuff, but it's not entirely unrealistic... I mean, if someone that insecure about people liking him started going bald, I'm sure he'd try a comb-over (although shaving his head entirely would be the better choice, but those errors in judgement are part of the reason that he's not great around people). As for the pocket protector, the guy may have had to draw a lot of diagrams and stuff, and probably wanted to keep his shirt clean, considering that he's working for such a huge company. I just think, for some reason, loads of the actors decided to ham-up their performances in the movie - I mean, look at Paul Giamatti's Rhino, or Dr Kafka, even Dane DeHaan after he became the Goblin (he was brilliant as Harry though), and of course Jamie Foxx as Max (although his Electro was great). And yes, I do agree to an extent that they should've continued to focus on Electro's insecurity, rather than just forgetting about it when Harry started taking up more screen time.

Sure there was stupid stuff, like Gwen's speech that makes me think she could see the future and probably should've joined the X-Men or something, or Peter "Science guy" Parker needing to watch a YouTube video to learn how electricity works because apparently he's never used electricity before, or all those rubbish accents every other actor felt that they had to scream into the camera... What I'm saying is that I understand that this wasn't the perfect Spider-Man movie, but that doesn't automatically make it a bad movie. It just didn't live up to people's expectations. And the stuff they did get right, they got REALLY right.

Well, that's the problem right there. There's no way to enjoy the movie for him (us) because there's an emotional investment that's bigger than that movie. I like the first Transformers movie because I don't really care if that gets portrayed one way or another.

I will argue with people who call it the perfect portrayal of Spidey, because that's bull. But you won't see me seeking that one out by creating an article about it either. I gave no money for the last movie (haven't seen it pirated either, might see it when its aired on tv) and I hope more people will join me on that because this franchise needs a new creative vision.
