In 2012, Oscar-winning composer James Horner, who is best known for scoring Field of Dreams, Braveheart, and Titanic, scored Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man. When the sequel was ready to be scored Horner passed on it and he was replaced by Hans Zimmer ("Man of Steel"). Horner recently explained to the fansite, James Horner Film Music, why he chose not to work on The Amazing Spider-Man franchise again.

JHFM: So The Amazing Spider-Man was quite unusual for you, it was probably the director's personality that brought you to this project, because he had a different vision for this film?

JAMES HORNER: He was very inexperienced and he and I had a very good relationship and the producers had their own opinion. And they didn't want his input. And then Sony had their own, they just wanted action.
To me, the whole thing about doing the movie was I liked the director and there was a chance to write something for the two lead characters and then she dies in the next movie. But the next movie ended up being so terrible, I didn't want to do it. It was just dreadful.

As if Sony didn't have enough on their plates dealing with hacking attacks and rumors of an 'Aunt May' solo movie, they now have to listen to a well-respected film composer bash The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and the film's producers.

We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead. It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp...

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be directed by Marc Webb from a script written by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner and James Vanderbilt. The film will star Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Sally Field as Aunt May, Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson, Paul Giamatti as Rhino, Jamie Foxx is Electro and Chris Cooper as Norman Osborn.

Just as most people thought, the producers are running Spider-man into the ground, and Marc Webb is just a stooge that needs to grow a pair.

This type of crap happens a lot at studios especially at WB....Well until the new CEO came in.

This movie would have been better as a silent film with no subtitles and just the logo on the screen for 90 minutes. Just awful.

Wow, you know there are problems in a film when the composer takes a mighty shit all over it and the people behind making it by publicly declaring his refusal to be involved with it in any way.

What especially hurts is that this James Horner guy is no slouch. He's worked on some very good movies and made some very powerful music in film. That score at the end of Field of Dreams is some of the most emotional stuff I've ever heard in a movie. His brilliant soundtrack makes this scene all the more sad:

If a guy who composes music with heart like this doesn't want to be involved with your vision, then your movie is soulless shit. Avi Arad sucks.

I don't think this movie was the disaster that some like to make it out to be. Sure, it had problems but it wasn't *that* bad. And no, it wasn't worse than Spidy 3.

Horner's statement = the final nail in the coffin. Avi Arad has got to go. Sony has to be stopped from ruining Spiderman.

People like to criticize Marvel for interfering with their directors' work but look at what Horner is saying here. He stopped involvement with a movie because he knew the suits at Sony were ruining the franchise by add mindless action (which they did) and bypassing Webb's authority on the project.

I don't even blame Webb anymore if this is true...which it probably is.

Does the Aunt May solo movie really need to be brought up again and again? It was 100% bullshit the whole time, and got debunked very quickly. Even Sony aren't that stupid.

And Jollem, do you have mental issues?

Not even kidding, I honestly think the ASM2 suit is horrible (and overfamiliar). The Raimi and ASM1 suits are much better, even if the latter's eyes looked like they'd been soaked in urine at times.

Horner's Braveheart and Titanic are both amazingly beautiful, scores...

TASM2, watched the ending of it last night (starting at Gwen's death), WTF was with Rhino? brutal...Sony higher-ups admitted they meddled with the movie, not tough to see...it's what ruined the first one too...

I didn't really follow ASM1, nor do I remember much of it. How did Sony mess with it, apart from the darker tone I'm assuming?

@Jaffi -

At least the Raimi movies had heart, character depth, and basic humanity. You could watch those films and not care about the action because they made Peter's struggle internal.

The last two TASM movies were made to sell toys to children - which is even sadder since Sony isn't collecting a red cent on merchandising.

I loved Spidey's suit and some of the action was straight outta the comics...could have been so much more, really too bad and missued opportunity...
