ARMY OF THE DEAD Star Dave Bautista Reveals The Real Reason He Turned Down THE SUICIDE SQUAD Role

We know that James Gunn offered Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista a role in The Suicide Squad, and the actor has now shared the real reason he turned his friend down and chose Army of the Dead.

Army of the Dead is fast approaching, and there's a lot of excitement to see what Zack Snyder brings to the table when he returns to the world of zombies (the filmmaker's big screen debut was the Dawn of the Dead way back in 2004).

Dave Bautista has a lead role in the movie, and it's no secret that he passed on The Suicide Squad for a chance to battle the undead. The actor worked with James Gunn on the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, so the fact that he turned his friend down came as a genuine surprise. Now, he's finally set the record straight.

While he doesn't reveal the DC Comics character he was offered, the actor started by telling Digital Spy, "I was all up for it, and then I got Army of the Dead, which was not only a lead role for me, but also I really wanted to work with Zack Snyder. I've been wanting to work with him for years."

"I had The Suicide Squad where I got to work with my boy again, even though it's a smaller role, and then I had Army of the Dead on which I get to work with Zack, I get to build a relationship with Netflix, I get a lead role in a great film...and I get paid a lot more money," he continued.

"I had to call James, and I told him, 'It breaks my heart, because as a friend, I want to be there with you, but professionally, this is the smart decision for me.' He said, 'I completely get it. I'm proud of you that you're even in this position. I'm proud that I had something to do with you being in this position where you have to make these hard decisions.'"

Looking at the cast of The Suicide Squad, it's hard to say who Gunn might have wanted Bautista to play (King Shark, perhaps?), but the actor has made it known that he's keen on starring as Bane or Lobo. A smaller role in Task Force X's return to the big screen may have put the brakes on that, and ultimately...money talks!

Who would you like to see the Drax actor suit up as in the DC Extended Universe?

@Grogu - You almost can't believe that he was The Animal, because in just about every interview he seems like the most humble kind man you've ever seen.

@Grogu - I’m glad Bane is not in The Suicide Squad.

WB was just simply making Suicide Squad aka David Ayer’s version, a Batman spin-off to get more people to check it out which is a disservice to the other characters who deserve to stand on their own away from Batman.

Nawww, Bautista really seems to be coming into his own.

@rexlincoln - I’m loving the dude. From his balls to stand up for his friend, and stick by him.

Guy came up through the trenches, he’s a real one.

Looks good, but I do wish Army of the Dead looked a bit more like Dawn of the Dead (2004).

Also, if anyone has the leaked 2007 Joby Harold script, email me.

@Darkknight2149 - I just wish the zombies were more similar to DOTD.

Anytime there's smart zombies involved (at least how they've been done thus far), the scariness goes away for me.

@Kurne -
Make-up wise, I think the zombies looked scarier in Dawn as well. The skin rot, blistering faces, ETC.

Army of the Dead also seems to use less practical effects than Dawn.

Yeah I definitely feel like Army of the Dead is better for his resume.

Still remember he was a baddie of the week in Smallville long time ago.

Bigger role, more money, Netflix relationship an a chance to work with a director he always wanted to wok with - who can blame him for choosing Army of the Dead?

Wonder what role he was offered in TSS though.

I do think this looks really good and am excited for it, but I'm a bit more hesitant about these streaming movies lately. The action ones just don't seem to have the quality of theatrical releases. This actually looks like an exception.

AotD looks really fun! So I'm happy he went his own way with this one.
