Here's How Krypto Could Play A Prominent Role In SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW

Hot on the heels of reports that Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has landed its screenwriter, comes a report that Superman's best canine companion will also be appearing in the film.

According to Variety, Krypto will also appear in the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow film that's being written by Ana Nogueira.

In the comics, Kara Zor-El  is often fairly lonely after arriving on Earth several years after her "baby cousin" Kal-El. While Superman doesn't remember much, if anything about Krypton, Kara is often depicted as a teenager when the doomed planet explodes.

When she eventually arrives on Earth, she's often dismayed by the primitive Earth technology when it's compared to the vast technological wonders of Krypton.

When first describing Woman of Tomorrow, DCU co-chair James Gunn stated, "We see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he’s an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock chip off of Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life."

Oftentimes, Kara's lone comfort and remembrance of home is Krypto.

The film is said to be inspired by Tom King's 2021 run on the Supergirl comics, which was collected as a TPB titled, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The TPB eventually sees Kara leave Earth and venture off into space with Krypto.

The official synopsis for the series reads:

Kara Zor-El has seen some epic adventures over the years, but she now finds her life without meaning or purpose. Here she is, a young woman who saw her planet destroyed and was sent to Earth to protect a baby cousin who ended up not needing her. What was it all for? Wherever she goes, people only see her through the lens of Superman’s fame.

Just when Supergirl thinks she’s had enough, everything changes. An alien girl seeks her out for a vicious mission. Her world has been destroyed, and the bad guys responsible are still out there. She wants revenge, and if Supergirl doesn’t help her, she’ll do it herself, whatever the cost. Now a Kryptonian, a dog, and an angry, heartbroken child head out into space on a journey that will shake them to their very core.

This volume collects Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #1-8

To expand on that synopsis, the series opens with Kara celebrating her birthday on a distant planet with a red sun. She travels there with Krypto, with the intent to use her weakened state (due to the red sun) to get drunk. While there, she comes across Ruthye, a young girl who is looking to hire a mercenary to avenge the death of her father.

However, the men behind her father's death catch up to her and they intend to finish the job and wipe out the entire family line. Naturally, Supergirl and Krypto step in and save the girl but Krypto gets poisoned during the confrontation. While Supergirl doesn't want to take on a mission of vengeance she reluctantly agrees to help Ruthye because she needs to acquire a sample of the original poison in order to cure Krypto.

The story has been called a superhero version of True Grit and has gone on to become a definitive story for Kara, despite being a fairly recent publication.

The question on the minds of DC fans now is whether Krypto arrives in Kara's spaceship or if he hitches a ride with Kal.

If it's the latter, then perhaps Krypto will actually be showing up a lot sooner in Superman: Legacy, alongside David Corenswet's Man of Steel

The fact that Krypto will be in this is utterly ridiculous. Oh right...Krypton had dogs! That is so stupid. Take the films a bit more seriously and you would not have prominent directors trashing the genre and the public in general rolling their eyes at every infantile joke. Hard Pass!!!!

@Forthas - kryptonians looking like humans down to even having the same exact internal organs is fine but you draw the line at dogs?

@reuelgomezbaez - YES...there is such a thing as parallel evolution (which makes sense why Jor El would send his child to a place where that happened) but it would make no sense for it to apply to ALL the flora and Fauna of Krypton to be identical to earth.

SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW is good read, but it has some pretty "dark" parts in the story.

I'm wondering how they going to address it the movie or just "water' it down for the mass audiences.

@Nomis929 - I don’t think it’s so dark to have to be watered down at all. There’s nothing I remember that would have to be any bit darker than guardians 3. Shiit if they do it right they well and could make something very emotionally charged.

Honestly , I wonder if we’ll see or hear about Kara & Krypto in Superman:Legacy since this story seems like it has Supergirl as a somewhat established hero at the least and we know that the DCU has some of those already?.

Anyway , Willa Fitzgerald or Elizabeth Lail (thanks @GhostDog) for Kara.

@TheVisionary25 - what about the Girl from warrior nun, would she look weird bright blonde? I definitely like your second pic, she was good in You. There’s also the actress that played Patti in Flash, Shantel VanSanten. I honestly don’t know the full extent of her acting chops but the way she interviews, she seems really funny and down to earth and the type that would excel with an S on her chest.

The Super Pets thing I've always found to be a bit goofy. I get how it's entertaining and "cute" for kids, but it just never had any appeal to me.

If krypto is in it, as other have said, will downspital into a powerangers episode, like love and blunder, with @taika, a shit show that supergirl will never recover from. Get the Russos and do a winter soldier with supergirl, show some vulnerability, tears and its 1 billion movie.

The fact that Gunn hired a person that has no writing or directing credits and her only credit is acting in true blood is truly insane.

How in the hell did she get to write a film that will have a budget of over 100 million as her first feature!

She has dirt on Gunn. There is no logical explanation for this. She has zero experience and she gets to write a 100 million dollar plus film as her first film?

Nah, Gunn is being blackmailed 😳

Hard for me to believe it's the newest "definitive" origin story when her original one still works pretty well and has been used many times from animation to live-action TV where she's found the most feedback.

But I remember during the press tour of Guardians VOL.3 that Gunn had to confirm sort of after Chris Pratt said it that Krypto would appear in the Legacy film, so I'd say we'll see Krypto before and then the little guy will find himself with Kara.
