Brian Peterson On Why We Didn't See Tom Welling In The Superman Suit

After ten years of waiting we never got a full shot of Tom Welling in the Superman suit. Smallville Producer Brian Peterson explained their reasoning behind the decision.

Smallville ended a couple weeks ago and a lot of people were unhappy that we didn't get to see Tom Welling in the Superman suit, show producer Brian Peterson talked with The Hollywood Reporter about their decision to keep Welling out of the full costume.

Said Peterson:

“What we wanted to do all along was show hints at where he was going because that is a whole different story that is yet to be told. It felt like it gave just enough without starting to tell a whole different story that is left for all the other media."

Peterson also went on to say that Smallville has always been about Clark becoming the hero from the famed mythos and that Superman stories and will continue to be told through other places like next years Man of Steel.

Also Adding:

“[Showing Tom in the full suit] to me is just not super relevant and not what we were trying to do. We were actually thrilled that everybody came together and was on board with the shots that we specifically picked. We all wanted it to be the end of Clark Kent’s journey because it’s a show about Clark Kent. In the days when we saw him in a flannel shirt, the suit was the furthest thing from his mind.”

What do you guys think was you satisfied with the way the show ended? Or are you upset that Welling never actually put on the suit. As always leave your comments below.

The ending really did suck with not showing him in the suit. It makes no sense to tease us with the suit every third ep this season and then not get a full shot with him in it, I hated that. That being said I still have love for the first six or seven seasons.

Yea, waiting for Wimpling to put the suit on was like waiting 10 years for softcore porn. This wasn't cutting edge story telling, this was all handjob and no payoff.

I was never a huge fan of Smallville and wanted to check the last episode out of curiousity. The things I hated in the finale:

1.) Green Arrow taking out New Gods with arrows (and they just y'know...stand there and let themselves get shot).

2.) Lex Luthor mind-wipe.

3.) CGI Superman pushing Apokolips away from Earth (where did it go afterward?).

4.) No Clark in the suit. Huge cop out. A lot of fans watched the show JUST to see this and I feel like it was a let down.

Glad I didn't invest time in the show like that...

Don't give me that BS. "Relevant" or not, they knew it was something the fans were dying to see. Even if it wasn't essential to him becoming Superman, once he had the costume on, hiding it from us by choosing specific agles and long distance shots really doesn't make much sense in this whole "It's about Clark" excuse. I was't gettin my hopes up for it, but I would like a straight answer.

The finale was the biggest cop-out in television history. I hope Kelly and Petersen are proud of themselves. One huge example of writers with their head up their ass and completely out of touch with their fanbase

Now: I don't have much ground to stand on here ((seeing as I was unable to keep up with the shower for several years)), but I agree with him. The show wasn't about Superman, it was about Clark Kent. The ending was perfect. Nuff said.

this series was about an Elseworld's "Superman" called The Blur. Welling doesn't have the gravitas to be Superman.

couple choice words for you Peterson, Frack you and your team of crap writers douche bag you are insulting the intelligence of the fans by insinuating it was irrelevent to see him in the suit why did you tease us all season long about the suit then frack'n douche bag!!!

Bullshit. That's all there is to it. Gough and Millar would have given us a better ending to the show and not this travesty of a cop out... there might not have been too much action at the end, but there would have been a chance of us seeing a recreation of Clark wearing the suit as Superman flying out of the Fortress in costume on the last shot like it was seen during "Superman The Movie" when he donned the uniform for the first time.

This is how I wished how it would've ended:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6eOf5e4AaH0

Ever since Gough and Millar left as the top producers, the show after their departure went to hell in a hand basket.

They will never see the error of their ways... They built up this EPIC AS moment for 10 frikkn years and what do we get?

A slap in the face with a Drizzle of Superman. Selfish.

They simply didn't want to over step any movie that was being made just how they made this choice back in 2006 when they didn't want him to end the season with his power coming from the sun as it did in Returns. They should have kept it all on it's own timeline and you wouldn't have this problem. Just how Green Arrow was supposed to Bruce Wayne and when Batman Begins took off they scrapped that as they didn't want to mess with the motion picture product. Meaning it was obvious that Oliver was Bruce, I say this as I know they were casting for BW and changed to Green Arrow due to the success of Begins.
PonyBoy12000
PonyBoy12000 - 5/27/2011, 9:38 PM
The original intro of Bruce Wayne was supposed to be BW meeting with Lex in Smallville with Alfred driving and them having an accident and Bruce going through memory loss and spending time on the Kent Farm after being found by Clark. Trust me
BlackSands

This is the ending I would have preferred:

I won't even mind if there was no action at all as long as a scene like that was reproduced and even it was only a shot of him for 10 seconds emulating Chris Reeve's flyby at the ending.

"to me is just not super relevant and not what we were trying to do." This must be a joke, its obvious that this asshole have no shame, seriously, its fricking ridiculous how he insist in justifing the lack of a costume shot for being Clarks jounrey. Really? Then why you frick off Lex memory, becuase his journey should never have represented nothing?

We all tolarated HIS ideas of the retard matrix costume, then the retard thriller jacket, and for what? for severals low budget zoom out cgi shots. FRICK YOU Brian Peterson, you ruin the show and what little was left of his reputation.
BlackSands
BlackSands - 5/27/2011, 10:19 PM
@spindrift, it wasn't ALL of him in the suit. Most of the time, it was a CGI model... a few of them were obvious cut copies onto Routh's CGI models from Superman Returns. Welling was never in the full suit at all.

THIS is what I wanted to see in the Smallville finale!

Photobucket

First Hour: Defeat Darksied and drive Apokolips back like he did.

Second Hour: Return to Earth to find Luthor in armor holding Lois and the Planet staff hostage, for the final battle!

Did we get that? Nope. How hard is it to build a Darksied costume and put a ex-prowrestler in it with a voice over actor? There are ways to budget and still create a creative atmosphere/setting?! Apokolips could have just been a dark warehouse room with a single bright light above with the occassional burst of pyro/flames in the dark background! Then have Clark in the suit fight the costumed Darksied! How hard is that?

Plus we had 9 seasons of DRAMA! Those last 2 episodes could have been just straight out BATTLES!

I will always be a fan, but I will always feel robbed every time I watch the finale. :P

You people are SOOOO pathetic it's ridiculous. You hate the show?? DON'T WATCH IT!!!!! Sheesh. First of all, he was in the suit, we saw him flying so he DID fly, and he BECAME SUPERMAN which is what the show was about from the beginning. If you were truly expecting to see Welling in the full suit. And btw, if any of you people think you can do better, then lets see some fan fiction. The finale was perfect and gave us exactly what the show promised in the beginning: the end of the journey to becoming Superman. So get off your high horses as if you were owed something. It's ok to get annoyed at an actor for not returning, like the backlash towards Rosenbaum for initially not agreeing to be on for the last episode b/c he wouldn't have his popularity without it, thus he returned b/c he's a good person and recognizes that. If you hated the show so much, then don't watch it!!!
