Filming Final Smallville Scenes Brought A Tear to Michael Rosenbaum's Eyes

A few weeks ago Michael Rosenbaum travelled to Vancouver to film his scenes for the Smallville finale, in this interview he talks more about why he returned, what it was like being on set and how he found it more emotional than expected...

Zap2it have been reporting on an interview with Michael Rosenbaum - I have quoted the bits relevant to Smallville

On the fans
He sighs. "It's so funny how the fans can get so intense." He deepens his voice to an angry tone. "'What is he doing that he can't come back? George Clooney came back to ER, and he can't? How big is he?' I'm like, 'Guys, God, relax.' It's not about that. So one day, I called the producers up, and I just said 'Hey, I'm doing this new show, but I'd love to come back and finish what I started.'" He pauses and laughs. "Which I thought I finished three years ago, by the way, but, let's do this. And they made it happen."

On returning to the show after three years
He confesses that he did initially have a few reservations about going back to the "Smallville" set. "There were personal reasons why I quit 'Smallville' that no one really knows about, that I never really talk about. It was just personal things, that I just never talked about. It was nobody else's business. But I never heard the end of it," he says, chuckling. "Look, I always said I never thought it would last 10 seasons. I can barely have a relationship lasts 10 days. Ten years on a TV show? That's a long time. But then they started calling me out. I finally said, 'You know what guys? I want to do this. Let's just do this.' I want to do it the right way, I want to do it for the fans. I swear to God I did it for the fans. I never want to hear 'Why didn't you go back?' I wanted it to end the way it should have."

On filming the final scenes
Now that all is said and done, Rosenbaum says he thinks that the final scenes between Clark and Lex are "excellent." He was warmly welcomed back on the set by old friends. "It was so great. I went up there and guys that weren't even working on the show anymore came to set to hang out. One guy brought me a joint," he jokes. "I mean, it's a real family."

Rosenbaum and Welling had a great time working together again. "Tom and I had a wonderful time together," he tells us. "We laughed a lot. I shot a couple of scenes with him."

It wasn't all laughter, though. Fans are going to have a very emotional finale experience come May -- and they're not the only ones. "I shot for 19 hours, and honestly, I had a tear in my eye at the end. I was like, 'Man, this is really it,'" Rosenbaum says wistfully.

As usual thoughts and comments below, and be sure to check out the full article over at Zap2it where Rosenbaum talks about his upcoming show Breaking In among other things!

I have watched it from the beginning too, even stuck with it through Season 7 - which was well below par. I cannot wait to see how the wrap it up. He has done the right thing!

Yeah He Did Do The Right Thing.
The Only Way I Even Seen That It Could End Right Is If He Came Back. He Came He Did What Needed To Be Done.
And He Got High lol

I don't even really watch Smallville, but it's cool that he came back. I might have to check out the finale just because...

Also, @joker22-- Is that the overly-long title of your novel? (heh) If not... that seems like an awful lot of work to capitalize the first letter of each word for no reason...

Stylistic choice, I suppose.

Hey, I mean, if there was a calligraphy font on here, I'd be all over that...

Anyway, I'm actually sort of excited about the finale, even as a non-fan. Any show that can run for ten seasons has my respect.

@ Contrast - I do think there will be a lot of non-fans tuning in, just to see how they deal with the transition to Superman...

i caught smallville for the first time at a friends house, about season 3 and loved it since..watched practically every episode (season 10 still not out over here in england) but i have watched half online.
personally the only series i didn't like was 4.
i'm glad he came back, it just wouldnt be the same without him.

I've always thought he left the show because he got sick of working with such awful material. I'd say his comments here about "personal reasons" probably confirms that. Hell, he more than likely only came back because he didnt want a huge backlash from fans. And as grateful as I am that he is returning, I wouldnt have blamed him for NOT doing so at all.

@ JoshW - yea I find that comment quite interesting. Respect to him for not mouthing off about it though, most actors would have.

"I shot a couple of scenes with him"...

???? WTF ??? A COUPLE of scenes???

Ok, now that is out of my system!

I'm still holding out hope that Tom wears the suit for more than just the last shot of him flying into the sunset. I have his vision of him already wearing the suit when Lex sees him for the first time again. I can picture Lex saying something like, "Well, look what you've become."

I can also picture something with Darkseid that makes Lex and Clark work together. For me personally what I used to like the most from the show was the relationship with Lex and Clark. How close they were, a real friendship with just bits of foreshadowing of what they would both become.

i'm so glad it's going to end soon. it pains my heart to have that comedy on tv embarrassing what it use to be.

surely michael was crying cause he couldn't believe he lowered his self respect enough to do it.

why can't they do what they did with "the cape" ? the cape was meant to be 13 episodes & they cut in down to 10.

why not with smallville ? it make sense, end it as soon as possible.

its not exactly quality tv is it,finale will the biggest let down in tv history.

snoopytrek@ I agree. He had made no bones about the fact he did not want to come back and now he expects us to believe he is all sappy and sentimental about being back for the finale? Sorry. Not buying it.

I don't want to come off as a know it all, but I have a friend who visits him every Christmas and the reason he left the show because of a accident. He hurt his back really bad. Maybe he doesn't want to tell people and if thats the case.....oops, but I had to say something after comments like.....he left because the material was bad. NOT THE CASE!!!!

Rosenbaum is so funny! He knows exactly how the fans were looking at the situation. This makes me a little bit curious about his personal reasons, but I guess we'll never know.

@Bohemiben I agree Lex and Lionel made the show.
I think that is part of the reasons some of the seasons sucked. Especially the Doomsday season.

So now it's all about the fans? lol I remember about a month a go he said he wasn't returning and then literally 2 hours later he had to change his mind when his name was being destroyed all over the internet.

If it wasn't for Smallville he'd be flipping burgers right now, damn ungrateful punk.

I'm glad he decided to do it. Very much looking forward to this. Smallville has been pretty darn good since they got Lois and Clark together. I think the finale is going to be nothing short of fantastic.

I think he did it because he wanted to have peace. We would have never let it go. NEVER!!!! lol They needed him to come back. How he was written out was stupid. When he had the device to "control Clark" and all it did was take his powers away. Oh please! And then Oliver thinks he killed him with a toy bomb. It's good that he's back and I'm glad he won't be a clone. They really needed this.
