Apparently, despite being busy with his role on Breaking In, the producers are "cautiously optimistic" that the star will return for the last few episodes of the shows final season but someone else definitely will not...

Here's an excerpt from the ever reliable Michael Ausiello's latest column, that hints at the chance of Michael Rosenbaum's return to the show as the villainous Lex Luthor, being far more likely than recent reports from the past few weeks have claimed. Oh, and he also confirms that Kristin Kreuk will most definitely NOT be back as Lana Lang.

Can you give us a big Smallville scoop?

"If what I’m hearing about the show’s final batch of episodes is true, producers are at the very least cautiously optimistic that the very busy Michael Rosenbaum will be back. Kristin Kreuk, meanwhile, will definitely not be back. Sorry Lana fans. (There are Lana fans out there, yes?)"


Pretty great news, huh? Whether you're a fan of the show or not, there's no doubting just how great Rosenbaum was as Lex, so his return would be a fantastic way of finishing the show on a high note. As for Kristin Kreuk, while I like her as an actress, I am relieved to see her character wont be back. Be sure to share your thoughts on all this in the usual place!

Yea he'll be back...it's a shame about Lana though. It would have been nice if she did a cameo or something just so they could get her out of that awful Krypto-suit.

But if Rosenbaum really was holding out, they should take it out on his character. Like the clone is basically the same as Lex....but he's a crossdresser lol.

Well, personally, I hope he does return, just to prove one of the basic icons of Superman comics, even no matter how stupid the Idea of Lex is, he returns, no matter how long he needs to rest to get into the position he thinks he needs to combat Superman/Clark Kent again

He needs to be back to at least do a half decent finale episode, without him its gonna BLOW.

We need the magic back!

No matter what he says, he will be back, but if he isn't I wont blame him... since DOOMSDAY its been all downhill bar a few eps in quality ever since season 8!

I dont know if I buy this article. The reason, i just read on IMDB that Kristen Kruek (lana)was slated to make an apperence in the mid-season opener. However, Kryptonsite has Chloe returning and the chick that plays black canarie, not Kristen Kruek.

thank god lana isnt coming back!!! ive had enough clark/lana shit to last me a lifetime. glad to see that there is still a change rosenbaum will return. i know im gonna be chastized for this but i say rosenbaum is a better Lex than Gene Hakeman(sorry if i miss spelled the name)

I'm hopeful for just a glimpse of Lex. A minute in the last episode would be great. I think it would be nice to show Lana. I think it would be great if there was some kind of report about Superman on TV and it showed different significant people from his life watching the broadcast. (Lana, Pete, Martha, etc.) Guess there's no hope for that though.

I'll cross my fingers. Him returning, even just for a small role, is something the show really needs. And I don't think it'd do Rosenbaum any harm either. A small paycheck and a little cameo for the fans.
