May 4, 2011: Tom Welling Talks "Smallville" Series Finale

"We shot the actual finale as our third-to-last episode," reports Welling, who also has been a "Smallville" executive producer and the director of six episodes. "We shot two more episodes, then shot the first part of the finale last. It gave us the opportunity to take a look at what would be the last image of the show in post-production and make any changes or adaptations to it. It didn't necessarily take the emotional pressure off us, but the time pressure."

Even if the very last scene was done weeks before production on "Smallville" ended, it still had its impact on Welling.

"I really didn't know what to expect," he says. "As we were shooting it, everyone's senses were heightened. People were flying up from L.A. (to Vancouver, where the show has been made) to supervise and make sure everyone who had to make a decision was there. Everybody was just really excited, and the energy level went up."

@supersayianfan1- Agreed dude. I like Welling...really I do. But seriously WHAT does he have against the suit?

It is an honor to wear the Superman suit. but whatever...it is what it is.

But one thing always bugged me...why doesn't Smallville ever listen to the fans? I'm sure Kelly and Brian must have gotten some hate-mail at some point about the crap they keep on messing up.

Hey You guys are probably right but what is a good disappointment without high hopes.

So I will wish, upon a star, that they are downplaying the suit to then surprise us with the suit and give us epic suit action.

Because after ten years, to have a little tee-hee shot with welling flying off for 4.5 seconds in the suit is almost a joke I might laugh if Kelly and Brian are that stupid.

It had it's high point this season too, though: Homecoming was one of the best episodes ever.

@YourMomNaked, Agreed but what made homecoming so great was its nostalgia to the early days of the show and its embracing of Superman as Clark's future. THe finale needs to do the same, it needs to be nostalgic a little but it needs to fully embrace the Superman concept.

Otherwise it will just be like the countless other teases the show has given us over the years.

I like the show and have stuck with it, but I am getting worried I will be majorly let down.

The whole finale should have been Superman, with Kelly and Brian blowing everyone's mind by having Welling put the suit on before the opening credits as oppose to the last 3 seconds.
