Smallville "Finale" Writers Reveal Why Season 11 Wouldn't Work

Smallville has brought about some mixed reviews from The Gorgeous Geeks. Some episodes we found unnecessary, pure crap, entertaining, inspiring, and some even had the power of "replay". We noticed a pattern with some of our favorites: they were directed and written by the fabulous duo, Al Septien and Turi Meyer. They took the time out of their busy schedule to talk with Christina and Katrina from The Gorgeous Geeks.

Christina: How proud are you of the finale for Smallvile?

Turi: Very proud

Al: We think it’s awesome.

Turi: We think it’s the best stuff we’ve ever done.

Katrina: I'm so excited now!

Al: It was a real honor to be asked to write the first half of the finale. Kelly (Souders) and Brian (Peterson) have always been really nice to us and good to us. We’re thrilled to be part of it, because it’s not only a historic event in terms of Smallville, and Superman, but a historic TV event. So we’re very happy and excited.

Christina: So you don’t think the fans will be disappointed at all?

Turi: I hope not. I wasn’t disappointed. And I’m a huge fan myself. I think fans will be very pleased.

Al: Some fans are going to be disappointed. You’re gonna piss off some people no matter what. Some of the shows that we thought were some of the best shows we’ve done, it was always one or two fans that came out and were pissed off about it. And you know, it's like, what are you gonna do?

Turi: You can’t please everybody.

Al: You can’t please everybody. But I think people will be excited and happy over all.

Katrina: Now I have to ask you guys, if there was a season 11, what kind of stories would you guys have wanted to write?

Al: Wow.

Turi: That’s a hard one. A lot of stories that we wanted to write, we’ve done, in building up to the finale in season 10. I would say in a way I think Smallville was near perfect, in a sense that, we went to 10 seasons; we had a lot of room to tell some great stories. I think a season 11 would have been problematic in some way. It’s a good wine; it finishes off right with no bad after taste.

Al: I think if we had gone to a season 11, I’m just kind of afraid, like Turi was saying; it would have been…we couldn’t make Clark Superman that was the thing. The series finishes with Clark becoming Superman. So what we would have to do is kind of tread water, waiting, figuring out, what else interrupted his growth. And I’m kind of glad that we didn’t have to do that I was talking the other day and saying we probably could have come up with another season. But the only thing is that it would have gotten frustrating. I remembered I hired a gardener once, who when he found out that I worked on Smallville said,” Oh my God I love the show, but when the hell is he gonna fly?” And that really pissed him off that he didn’t fly, and our feelings always was, he flies when he becomes Superman. Those two things come together for Clark and you know another season without him flying would be very frustrating.

Katrina: Yeah I think our mother would explode if that would have happened.

They also talked more about what went on in the writer's room and how to break into the business. For the rest of the interview, go to http://www.thegorgeousgeeks.com/alandturinterview.html.

the show got writers?

there won't be a season 11 because they've repeated all the storylines at least twice each season.

how many times has all the supporting cast got powers & clark loses his.

Look, I understand that Smallville has taken a lot of liberties with the comics, but where do they get this "He flies when he's Superman" thing?

These guys know good story structure but they know nothing when it comes to good episodic arc structure, storylines going on with characters are just pushed to the side or ignored completely for multiple episodes until writers are finally ready to randomly deal with it.

"Some fans are going to be disappointed. You’re gonna piss off some people no matter what."

Especially in the case of smallville where some of the biggest and dumbest mistakes have been made. Remember season 8? Building up Doomsday for 22 episodes as this all powerful being that will finally give Clark a run for his money...only to have Clark beat it in a 1 minute battle in the season finale without ever even throwing a single punch?

Hey it lasted ten years good job, we all kind of know they were treading water for a while but if this finale is as good as they say I will be happy.

and on doomsday can we quit kicking the dead horse. They had a small budget and the fight at least gave a small nod to the comic with the little kid in the street about to get owned until clark shows up (my memory is a little hazy maybe I am thinking of another kid), they did the best they could.

"and on doomsday can we quit kicking the dead horse. They had a small budget"

Ahh you're right!!! Of course I forgot, Welling demanded a million for each fake punch thrown right? That's why they couldn't have a fight scene on a small budget.

Well I don't claim to know where all the money goes in this industry but I would think a huge clark vs doomsday fight that destroys lots of metropolis or at least the one alley set they use, would cost some money. Clark and Doomsday super punching each other through stuff and all the explosions and effects, I would think that would be expensive. They backed themselves into a corner with a fight scene they could not do properly.

My point is we all know it was a disappointment, so let it go. The show is almost over, we are about to see the current smallville teams best efforts. It seems kind or rude to berate them for how stupid they were at their worst moment.

Yeah. I equate smallville to a prostitute your friends bought. You believe the hype put behind her. You're disappointed when you see her, but the hours paid for, so why not finish?

@mainstream. Smallville always had some rules, clark doesnt wear the costume, and he doesnt fly until the last episode when he takes on the Superman (by name) persona. And really Superman didnt fly at first in the comics. He jumped around like the Hulk. "Can leap tall buildings in a single bound" sound familiar? From what I heard it wasnt until the radio show he took flight. Seems they thought boingy boingy sounds would sound a bit silly.

"Turi: You can’t please everybody.

Al: You can’t please everybody. But I think people will be excited and happy over all."

WOW, this is the attitude of people who are setting themselves up to fail. You may not be able to please everyone, but you should sure as hell try. Aim small, miss small.
This dialogue just tells me that they know that "most" of us will be disappointed and they have resolved themselves not to care. They know that Clark isn't going to become Superman until the very last second and it will probably be just the shirt opening to reveal the S symbol. Followed by a really cheesy, crappy figure in the distance flying away. If that happens or anything remotely similar to that happens, yeah that will royally piss off 99% of the fans that have loyally stuck with the show all these years.

Michael Rosenbaum came back even though he REALLY didn’t want to, but did it just to give the fans a thrill, but the show couldn't get Tom Welling to wear the suit for more than a frame on camera to give the fans the thrill . (Total hypocrites)
They keep giving us this line of BS about the show being about Clark Kent, and that’s fine and all, but the show is ending with a transformation into Superman. It wasn’t going to ruin the integrity of the show to have that transformation take place mid way through the “LAST” episode. It would have been fitting and thrilling. They didn’t do it because Tom Welling was against it.
Oh, and for all of you out there that are about to say, “They have said, (No tights, no flights) since the beginning). Well in the beginning the show wasn’t supposed to go more than 4 seasons, and the stories were only “Supposed” to be of Clark in High School. Oh and there has even been plenty of flying. Even Clark has flown before when he was “Kal.” At some point in the show they could have easily made excuses like that to put Clark in the suit, but didn’t because that was really the thing that Tom Welling didn’t want to do. How about an episode where Clark goes to an alternate reality where things happened as they should have according to cannon? He could have met the real Superman in that episode and seen himself in the suit. That too much imagination for you Smallville writers?

i reckon it would be really good not to do anymore smallvile but to do a series carrying straight on from the last episode and have it go straight into the justice league....or have it start a year or so later.

marvel 72 why do you hate smallville so much its the best representation of superman and probaboly always will be. It took all the good things from the superman comics and got rid of the cheasiness(superman suit). not to mention it added the best character of all lionel luthor.

Smallville only repeated a storyline ounce through out the series and has amazing acting. I dont know why you dont like smallville but dont make the people who do like it seem like idiots.
