Smallville: Interview with Executive Producers Brian Peterson & Kelly Souders

Smallville's final season has hit the mid-year point, and the website Assignment X has scored an interview with executive producers Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders, who provide some hints on where things are going.

ASSIGNMENT X: I was under the impression from interviews last year that Zod was intended as a two-year arc?

BRIAN WAYNE PETERSON: Callum [Blue] had a two year contract, but even though we had loved Callum, we felt we had really run the character’s arc out. The exciting news is, we have hopes of having one great Zod episode. Nothing in stone, but we’re hopeful for this year.

KELLY SOUDERS: We know what it’s going to be.

AX: I think the great thing about this season, is officially knowing the show will be over so you can use the entire season to wrap things out.

SOUDERS: A lot of people say, “you have your last season, you don’t have to worry about a pick-up and all the pressure is off …”

PETERSON: We’ve never felt more pressure in our lives.

SOUDERS: After being fans of the show for a decade, we wanted to end this on the highest note possible. I would say we’re running harder and this whole writing staff is running harder than they’ve ever run before.

AX: Are you going to do a one hour or two hour finale?

PETERSON: It will be spectacular. We have some big hopes for it.

AX: Does that mean you’re going to have to save up your bank, to be able to do the big thing you want to do?

PETERSON: We have our piggy bank.

SOUDERS: We have been protecting that all along. We have wonderful co-horts at the studio.

AX: Obviously shows like LOST and THE SOPRANOS, they try to find unconventional ways to tell their ending – do you have any surprises? Do you feel SMALLVILLE kind of has to end in a way that makes sense for the entire series or can you be meta and weird and do something strange too?

PETERSON: I think we succeed best when we do both. When we can pull off both, that’s when we’ve done our job. When we do something surprising and satisfying.

SOUDERS: We’re going to try to do it all.

Interesting to see them asked about budget for the final episode which is hopefully a two parter. I hope they are saving money for that last few scenes, if so then I don't mind some episodes being CGI light. Like superguy said it has to be Superman vs Darkseid, then after that maybe a save montage similar to the films.

Last season was better than season 8 and so far this season has been better than last season. I just wish they'd get him in the air already... Hell every Kryptonian on the show has flown except him. I don't understand why it's such a big deal to keep him grounded, it more aggravating than it is suspenseful.

Can't wait to see what Nolan and Snyder do with Big Blue!

ONE WHOLE SHOW WITH HIM IN THE SUIT FIGHTING A FULLY REALIZED DARKSIED, EVERYTIME THEY FIGHT ITS EPIC..YOU NEED A EPIC ENDING..TO ONLY HAVE HIM IN A SUPERMAN SUIT FOR A MINUTE WOULD SUCK HORRIBLY. PEOPLE WANNA SEE HIM IN ACTION, ITS BEEN 10 YEARS..PEOPLE WANNA SEE SUPERMAN AGAIN.

Flying wires, the suit, an epic take off, and John Williams Superman theme.
Knightstalker
Knightstalker - 12/22/2010, 11:12 AM
No John Williams theme!!! Please get over this donner-verse fascination, people. Crapville will never measure up to Superman: The Movie. Put Tommy Boy in the damn suit already and quit dragging this thing out until the bitter end. We've waited ten stinking years, we deserve a little more than just a couple minutes at the end of the last episode.

@deadpool72 Amen, Brother. This show has gotten absolutely ridiculous since Souders & Peterson took over. They'd best prepare to leave the continent forever if the Finale sucks -- mark my words . . . .

I have asked this before and I have never been given a answer, so I will try again. To the haters of Smallville what exactly do you not like about the show.

@ suzanne

what do i hate about "smallville" ?

apart from "zatanna" & "j.s.a" episode which first showed us the amazing dr.fate costume.

everything else.

click on the "superman" logo on the main page box, find any of the "smallville" articles,i'm bound to be on it.

with most of the time the reason for the hate i.e tom welling acting ability, the mistreatment of classic characters, terrible writing, five minute action per episode & so much more.

Smallville rules, all the haters are just pathetic.

It's the longest running sci-fi show EVER!

Knightstalker
Knightstalker - 12/22/2010, 7:58 PM
JaySin, That honor goes to Dr. Who. Crapville is the longest running comic book show ever. Please excuse all of us "haters" for having expectations of proper treatment of characters, a little less teen angst using actors in their 30's, a little more than 2 minutes of action per episode, and after 10 years we all would like to see Superman actually wearing the suit and flying once in a while.

@ knightstalker

well said,i was thinking along the lines of "dr.who" or "star trek".

"dr.who" is on something like season 30.
Knightstalker
Knightstalker - 12/23/2010, 10:01 AM
DP, I didn't even think of Star Trek. I suppose it qualifies seing as there have been 5 TV shows with several of them running concurrently, in addition to all of the movies. Nice catch.
