Smallville: Some Conjecture Regarding Lex Luthor

Smallville: Some Conjecture Regarding Lex Luthor

There were some interesting developments in last night's episode of Smallville, "Beacon," which raise a couple of questions about what we may be in for when Michael Rosenbaum does make his return to the show. SPOILERS FOLLOW.

As anyone who watched the episode knows, the cloned Lex Luthor has become his late teens/early 20s version as portrayed by Lucas Grabeel. Following some genuinely powerful scenes between Grabeel's Lex and John Glover's Lionel Luthor, there is a "quieter" moment between Lex and Tess in which he complains about feeling sick, and also that some of his memories are beginning to fade. Tess, well aware that no matter what she does, ultimately Lex is going to become his evil self (after all, he has all the memories of his progenitor), attempts to secretly inject him with something that will either render him unconscious or, more likely, kill him. But when she attempts to administer the shot to his neck, the needle breaks, unable to penetrate his skin.

Hmmm.

The first thing that instantly comes to mind is the notion that this Lex has been cloned from DNA taken from Clark. So, in an interesting twist on the DC Comics approach in which a clone of Superman (now known as Conner Kent) is created from the DNA of the Man of Steel mixed in with Lex Luthor, this time the DNA cocktail has been used to create a clone of Lex.

What this would potentially give us in the final episode of the series, is a super-powered battle between Clark and Lex, the years of frustration and animosity between them finally being given the opportunity to be unleashed. In fact, one could easily see Clark defeating Darkseid - his greatest moment - putting on the Superman uniform and THEN having to face the super-powered Lex in a battle that will establish a future history between these two incarnations of the characters that will only exist in our imaginations.

And as to the memory loss Lex is experiencing -- what better way for he and Superman to be enemies than for him to have forgotten all he knows in terms of the truth about Clark and the Kent family? At which point, the playing field would be cleared, all of the pieces would be in place and things can continue off camera.

All conjecture, of course, but what do you think? Any of the above make sense? Please sound off below and offer your own theories as to what may be happening.

He can't be Conner Kent. The Kryptonite didn't hurt him!

That sounds plausible Ed... I am just glad Lex will be in the finale... a throw down between Lex and Clark would be awesome though...

I know alot of people are gonna kill me but I didnt follow conner kent in the comics, if someone be so kind and help me out with this.

Ed, I think it was Cyanide she was trying to inject Lex with. I dont know what to think if this is true. Lex with powers would kind of be like a Brainiac, wouldnt it? Maybe it could work, just because of theyre pure hatred towards each other, but after the way they got rid of Lana, I think this might be an easy way out, especially if it isnt really Lex, and hes going to die soon anyway

EdGross - 2/12/2011, 7:04 AM
Well, that's the thing: he likely WON'T die. I'm pretty sure they're going to make sure all the pieces are in place as the show ends, which would also mean setting up the ongoing conflict between Superman and Lex.

Great article Ed...i think that's a great assessment...I have a feeling we see a lex Clark team up to defeat darkseid and even possibly zod when he returns but then I see it playing out the way you've listed.

the way CW writes these episodes (if you can call that writing), I'd have to guess that Lex and Clark team up to fight Darkseid.

After the teamup, Lex gets drunk with power and Clark defeats him. The end.

The clone is going to be Connor Kent. But his Kryptonian powers didn't kicked in when he was holding Kryptonite. His powers "did" kicked in when Tess tried to inject cyanide into him. Remember...Connor's body proceses his powers slower than regular Kryptonians.

am i the only one remembering that the clone lex is rapidly aging and is guna die soon?????

can anyone else remember at the very first episode on season 10 that when clark is in limbo, before he comes back to life, just as hes fading and coming back to the real world theres some one that looks like lex doin the same thing???

wouldnt be surprised if when alexander dies the real lex shows up

@ Ed - I was thinking the same. Conner Kent came to mind but his red hair told me the same, that they flipped the script and changed it to Lex version with Supes abilities. I find it interesting and different.

Let's see how it plays out, I sense Darkseid issue will be put to rest between the 3rd and 1st part of the 2 hour finally. The Lex battle will be the final hour. That is what I'm betting.

And yes it was Cyanide.

It occurred to me that Clark and Lex with a temporary truce would team up to defeat Darkseid because the threat is so great. It should be interesting to see how this plays out.
Exiles
Exiles - 2/12/2011, 10:13 AM
peoples suggestion of clark and lex teaming up to defeat a bigger threat is pretty good, would definitely be interesting. The fact is that there's a lot of mini plots going on at the same time along with Darkseid, the question is can they make it work. All they really have to do is finish it with Lex back, perry white taking over daily planter, and clark with his disguise

kavface - 2/12/2011, 10:20 AM
isnt zod returning? maybe he helps clark defeat darksied and they do the whole "brother" thing only for lex to kill zod

just give them the send off these characters deserve.

From the early seasons of smallville, I do remember the luthors having a vile of clarks blood in their possesion. It's totally plausable that the clone has some of clarks dna as well and its just starting to manifest but probably will fade as well, once they stop Lex's aging.

I'm actually hoping that the original Lex somehow appears. I keep on reminding myself of the 1st episode of the 10th season, when Clark was clinically dead, and hovering between life and death in that cornfield. He saw Lex before he was (somehow) resucitated.
I'm beginning to believe that maybe Oliver didn't kill the original Lex but a clone. This was done to fool everyone into believing that Lex Luthor was dead. I do believe that Lex was badly hurt in the ice rockfall at the Fortress and that he planned to use a clone to heal himself (maybe transplant his brain into a healthy body, like in the comic books).
Isn't the Lex clone losing his memories. Maybe this is part of the process. A healthy clone body with no mind (just a vialable "healthy" husk waiting for a transplant)

I admit Seeing Lionel back made me feel like It was a new start to the series....

Thank god this show may actually be picking up...maybe!

I hope!

Yea they did an amazing job with this especially since they didn't know for sure if Rosenbaum would be back.

I wonder if they're considering bringing him back as the real Lex though, I mean we never actually saw him die. Somebody could have pulled him out of that truck before it blew up, or something.

I'm pretty sure that was the plan originally, there was a line about in the season premiere. Something like the creator made the clones to heal himself in case he was badly hurt, which he was.

I don't have a problem with the clone thing though, especially the way they set up, but if he returned as the real Lex it would be perfect.
