Smallville: Tom Welling Talks the End of the Series

Zap2It had the opportunity to chat with Tom Welling about the end of Smallville, and what follows are some highlights from the interview.

ON SHOOTING THE LAST SCENE:

"I really didn't know what to expect," he says. "As we were shooting it, everyone's senses were heightened. People were flying up from L.A. (to Vancouver, where the show has been made) to supervise and make sure everyone who had to make a decision was there. Everybody was just really excited, and the energy level went up. I would imagine it's like the last mile of a marathon, where the adrenaline kicks in and really allows you to finish strong. At the same time, it was 'Make sure the shot's good.' The last image, for me, sums up not only the end of Clark Kent but the birth of Superman. I hope that's what people can take away ... that Clark is still out there fighting the good fight, but we're just not able to go with him."

ON BEING IN THE COSTUME:

"To me, and to a lot of people connected to the show, that's not what the show is about. Maybe we leaned that way sometimes because it was easier to go that way and it would be easier to write about, but to me, the integrity of the show was about Clark Kent in Smallville. Even when he made his move to Metropolis, the essence of the character before he became Superman was always important to me. That's what I found interesting, that's why I signed up 10 years ago, and I think it's a big part of why people watched."

ON THE SHOW ENDING:

"I think people will feel fulfilled, but it's going to be bittersweet. If someone has been watching the show for 10 years, it's coming to an end, and that's never a fun thing. There have been shows where I've been like, 'This finale had better be good, because I've spent a lot of time on this.' I was a big fan of '24,' and the way they ended that was fantastic. They gave me what I needed, and it was like a happy breakup. You always want more, but the reality is that it can't go on forever."

Welling continues to downplay Superman -_-

Wearing the suit is an HONOR...he should take more pride in it. But still, Welling is great for what he HAS done...I mean 10 years as Clark Kent. He really is the truest Clark Kent ever.

From what I gather from this, it looks like what every fan has feared is going to come true. He will only wear the costume for the final few seconds. I estimate maybe the last 3 to 5 seconds of the show and that's it. Bummer, I was really hoping for at least the last half or the entire last episode. Sucks! :(

@Tenacious For real! i'll be "SUPER" pissed if it goes down like that.

They said they knew what they fans wanted.

Yes, we wanted to see Tom in the suit for the last seconds of the series. How did you know?

dumba$$es......They had better make this finale great.

I hope he at least fight Darkseid in the suit. Like someone just said wearing that suit is an honor. It cant be that hard to put the damn suit on I mena Dean Cain rocked the suit in The Lois & Clark Adventures and that shoe had a much lower budget.

The show has never been about "Superman" it's always been about Clark Kent prior to Superman. If you don't like, don't watch. :P Not very hard concept...

I'll be fine with him wearing the suit in the final shot of the show. I'd just like to see him on a roof top standing in the suit for five seconds, then fly off into the sky. Expecting anymore than that you'll just be disappointed.

i hope we get more superman than we all think but i truly think by the way welling is talking that we might see him tear open his shirt revealing the S shield with him walking of scene with his clothes left behind and maybe lois watching him fly away. remember welling said "The last image, for me, sums up not only the end of Clark Kent but the birth of Superman. Clark is still out there fighting the good fight, but we're just not able to go with him." so we can see him as clark one last time but once he becomes superman we can't join it. HOPE I'M WRONG!

MisterJay - 5/4/2011, 7:39 PM
@vermillion..... im agree ....but ...it seems that we aint gonna get even that..... the final 3 seconds surely will be something pretty basic.... something like open de jacket and show the s ....:s

The reason he downplays Superman is because he's played Clark Kent for 10 years, and Superman for a few minutes.

Now if any real fan that reads up on this stuff actually thinks there's even a tiny chance that Welling won't wear the costume...or fly...or that we won't see him in the entire costume for more than a few seconds.....YOU ARE A GOD DAMN MORON!

You gotta respect Smallville for being in the show for 10 year. Personally, the show has been a part of my life though there some down moments, but it's nice that they are going to end this thing hopefully with a bang. Welling has dedicated his life to this and I wish him luck after Smallville.

im disapointed not just about the finale....:s is about basically the finale...but im pissed with the entire season...this is the most expected season...the conclusion of a 10 years history and the beggining of an inmortal one..... but they make a poorly intent of get more audience...i mean gladiator....wedding.... hang over!! cmon!! this season should have the big steps to the superman door....the whole series has been the great small steps...but this ones must be the epic ones... darkseid ...real decisions....but we get like 2 or 3 episodes of the history...just that...:s so yes... im a real fan but after this episode maybe i will become one of the smallville haters that pissed me off so much :'( i hope with all my heart that im wrong...and they will give us an epic finale ...but...:s

Life's too short to hate...I can't understand how people slag smallville off...you guys who hate it must clearly watch it to be able to pass judgement...but if you hate it why do you watch it?

Yes there are alot of things that could have gone better...but there have also been some amazing episodes and moments...nothing is perfect that's life!!

At least they tried and have provided entertainment for 10 years to the masses...Smallville I take my hat of to you...thank you for the journey and I will miss my weekely fix!!!

Not a fan of that suit. I hope I never see it on the screen. The vids of Nick Cage wearing it were bad enough.

After Smallville ends my Saturday mornings are gonna suck :o( I really do hope that they're lying though and that we get a bit more Superman in the finale.
EdGross
EdGross - 5/5/2011, 2:23 AM
I've always believed that when/if we see him as Superman, it truly will be in the final moment of the last episode. It will probably be like that moment in Superman: The Movie when Clark's training by Jor-El concludes, he stands there, in costume for the first time, the music swells up, he takes off, flies towards camera, banks away and we cut to Metropolis. In this case, it will likely go to black and the executive producer credits will come up.

I say this because the costume IS in the fortress, so it wouldn't surprise me.

Every episode this season has been a hit or miss. There will be one good episode followed by 5 or 6 really crappy episodes. I am a huge fan of Smallville but I am trying not to set my expectations to high for the finale. Darkseid continuing to be a demonic spirit that makes people turn against one another has got to be one of the dumbest ideas ever and it looks as though he will not manifest himself in a physical form by the end of the show. Like everyone else, I don't expect Clark to wear the suit more than 4 or 5 seconds which is extremely disappointing. They should have had Clark putting on the suit in the last 30 minutes and exchanging some punches with Darkseid, I'm sure that is what every fan was wanting at the beginning of the season. Too bad......

Like he said it was about Clark Kent, not Superman. Everyone is ragging Tom for "downplaying" Superman, and not wanting to "suit up"; that's alot of pressure putting that S on your chest and portraying the greatest and most popular Superhero of all-time. Through the ups and downs, thanks for the 10 years you gave us Smallville.

Tom Welling is an assholl. The fans are not interrested in a clark kent story. Smallville is about the superman mythology. How can you actually leave superman himself out of the series when telling a superman story. Sorry Welling & producers, you realy suck if you don't show us a decent superman scene.

skoewe, "The fans are not interested in a Clark Kent story"? Of course they are! That's what Smallville has been about from the very first episode, or, as Al Gough stated many years ago, "The Trials of Clark Kent." There was never any question that once he became Superman, the Smallville story was over because Clark had taken the final step towards the embracing of his ultimate destiny.

As much as I would have liked to have seen him in the uniform longer, Tom Welling is actually right in this case.
