Tom Welling Talks Smallville Season 9

Tom Welling Talks Smallville Season 9

The notoriously press shy Tom Welling has granted an extremely rare interview to TV Guide.com to discuss season nine, explain why he signed on and what the deal is with that "S" on his chest.

The promos for season nine have described the year as "Clark Kent's darkest hour," to which the actor offers this explanation: "In the past, Clark has always been the reluctant hero. Everyone is telling him what he has to do and he doesn’t want to do it. With the events of Jimmy’s death [in May’s season finale], along with the eight seasons building up, he realizes that his view on humanity has been wrong. And he goes to Jor-El and says, ‘I messed up, what do I do now?’ Jor-El takes him in, and Clark starts his training. His training ultimately is what will prepare him to be who we all know he’s going to be in the future. So it’s him spending time at the Fortress of Solitude downloading all this information. At the same time, information is given to him that the fate of the world depends on Lois Lane’s survival. So Clark has to struggle between his destiny and his humanity. Especially in the first few episodes it gets in the way of the training, because he just can’t help but deal with humans and help people, when all Jor-El wants him to do is shut everyone off, forget about them, rise above them and be the hero he needs to be.

"He's lost faith in his role with humanity," he continues. "I think he's lost faith in himself and what he thought he was supposed to do. Not only is there only so much he can do, but what he’s been doing was wrong, and he needs to go and change directions. There’s a lot of isolation. But then of course, there’s the struggle and the drama pulling him back into these relationships."That is the symbol of the House of El. I’ve gotten away for many years with the blue t-shirt and the red jacket. Very easy wardrobe for me, very simple, straightforward, very comfortable. This new wardrobe, the leather jacket is a little warmer, you have to learn how to not step on your jacket when you’re in a fight sequence. You learn that pretty quick—it doesn’t take many times before you figure that out! Anyway, he’s trying to establish a call sign for himself. Even though Clark isn’t putting his own face out there it’s his way of taking accountability for what he’s doing. This year he’ll be known as the Blur. And there’s a circumstance in the second episode where he’s almost caught by Lois. And through some very interesting lighting we see the symbol, but we don’t see Clark’s face. And it’s a perfect moment for him to step forward and say, “Lois, it’s me,” but he doesn’t. Poor Lois. Because that’s all she really wants to know.

"The thing is," he elaborates, "it’s a show going into Season 9. We’ve covered a lot of ground. When we first started talking about [this season] my first thought was apprehension. At the beginning the show was ‘Before Superman,’ Clark Kent’s origins, and how he got to that point [of becoming Superman]. Now you can definitely see that it’s a new era for the show. People say, ‘Season 9? It’s been so long.’ It has, but at the same time every year is the only year, every year is a new show. Especially this year. We look at posters up in the office of Season 1, 2 and 3 and we were kids, literally. Looking back it’s like a whole other world. But that’s the way it’s always been on our show. And standing on set wearing a black shirt, with silver S, black leather coat, black jeans, black boots, and thinking about last year, it’s night and day."

Why don't they just quit already? This is no longer Smallville, it's either Metropolis or Superman. But besides the show's title, I hope they do continue the story after this season.

I'm still of the feeling that they ought to let the show go another season or two, REALLY embrace the Superman mythology, pay Welling $10 million and use the series to launch a new Superman movie with him in the full costume. Right now, the character's movie fate is in complete limbo -- there is NOTHING being done with him for the big screen -- and this would bring a built-in audience to theatres.

@ Helldemon - In defense to the title, Clark is Smallville. It's the nickname Lois gives him in the comics and it's what he represents. Everything he's learned about being a hero all originated there. So I why change it?

@Ed Gross - The word is Welling signed on for two seasons after season eight so we may see a season Ten, but as much as I love the show, that's where they should end it. There are too many shows that go longer than they should and they end up getting ruined one way or another, I say they're going strong with season nine and they should go full force for season ten and end it while it's still one of the hottest shows on TV, and who knows, if we harrass the execs maybe we will one day see the Smallville/Superman movie everyone wants to see.

I cant wait for this season. Like everyone else who loves the show i hated the last season finale and just hope this season can live up to the hype. And ppl needa stop ripping the costume, look how many times through out the comics that sups had a different costume, if the comic book writers can do it why not them, this show is like a different comic book, the can make it what they want as long as they stay somewhat true to the source material

For Smallville, it's all going to come down to the writers. Last season they were on a pretty good roll until the Lana arc, and from that point onward the show went downhill and never recovered. Now IF the writers are living up to the promotional footage we've seen so far, then it means that they've moved beyond the more pedestrian aspects of the storytelling and are grappling the Superman aspect of the show with full force. As to the costume, would I prefer the traditional uniform? Of course I would. But at least this is a step in the right direction, and Clark will have the "S" emblem on his chest. That's a promising start. I'm trying to go into the new season with a bit of optimism and it will be up to the writers if I live up to my promise of last season and stop watching.

the title of the show is irrelevant. Prison Break was still prison break even in the seasons when none of them were in prison! it's not like it's going to attract a new audience in its ninth season, so we all see it as 'that show about superman' anyways.

@ samd

and prison break sucked just as bad as smallville...okay, maybe a little more than smallville.

but yeah, name doesn't matter. in this case..."trash, by any other name, would smell like shiz"

Will the recent lawsuit put Smallville in the same category as the films, meaning they can't mention anything to do with Krypton? It's hard to imagine Jor-El training Clark and Krypton never being mentioned.
EdGross
EdGross - 9/9/2009, 10:27 AM
Geek4Life, that doesn't seem to be a problem for the show, because Zod is coming from Krypton's past and apparently there is going to be all kinds of references to the planet.

Some very good points, Brianj. The only place I really disagree is on the usage of certain characters. If Warner Bros. is developing a $200 million Green Lantern movie, they certainly don't want another live action version interfering with that -- especially one done on a television budget. And with The Dark Knight grossing a billion dollars, they certainly don't want anyone else playing with Batman in live action while they're making the films. Now with Wonder Woman, since no one seems to be able to crack it as a feature film, maybe Smallville should be given a chance with the character.
