DC Studios Boss James Gunn Shares Update On DCU's Chronology; Will WGA Strike Delay The Entire Slate?

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has shared a minor update on the new DCU's chronology, but concerns are now growing that the strikes could cause major delays to the rest of this new shared world's slate...

It's been just shy of seven months since DC Studios unveiled its "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters" slate, and the WGA and SAG-AFTRA really strikes couldn't have come at a worse time for the newly formed production company.

Some breathing space between the DCEU's end and DCU's launch is a must, of course, and 2024's only DC movie is going to be "Elseworlds" title Joker: Folie à Deux

We had, however, expected Creature Commandos (and perhaps even Waller) to be released on Max next year. As things stand, it's hard to predict when we'll see those, but James Gunn has now offered an update on where things currently stand with his and Peter Safran's reboot plans.

In terms of a chronology for this shared world, the filmmaker reiterates that Creature Commandos takes place prior to Superman: Legacy. When it comes to projects beyond those, Gunn confirms that "nothing else is finished or being written."

That's understandable given the strikes, but this is an issue DC Studios could do without.

With concerns the strikes could last well into next year - Superman: Legacy is set to begin shooting in January - it's hard not to wonder whether the rest of the DCU slate won't get going until 2027 or beyond. If all those future projects aren't even written yet (never mind cast) then delays like this are definitely going to sting.

Ultimately, it might only be a difference of six months or so and there's a chance DC Studios always planned to take its time rolling out these movies and TV shows, regardless of these strikes slowing things down.

For now, Superman: Legacy is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.

James Gunn when asked whether the DCU will have a publicly-accessible chronology: ‘Creature Commandos’ precedes ‘Superman: Legacy’ and that “nothing else is finished or being written yet (and won’t be until after the strike!)”

Blessing in disguise. Gives them a chance reassess wtf they’re doing instead of rushing out another cinematic universe, because that slate was asswater.

I have a feeling we are not going to see any of the slate. I 100 percent feel like the shape the studio is in, there is no other choice but to sell it off. The value of the DC brand is a net negative but they cannot do anything about it until the run of CBMs is over. If legally possible this studio will be sold off and then as far as the DC films all bets are off.

I want an awesome DCU especially since the MCU has gone down the toilet. But I also don’t want them to rush things.
They need to focus on their elseworlds, make some profit and then get the DCU underway.

So this confirms Blue Beetle is not a DCU movie.
