On the heels of last night's major casting news (more here), another established DC Comics character has been added to James Gunn's upcoming DCU reboot, Superman: Legacy.

According to THR, Anthony Carrigan - who emerged as the breakout star of HBO's Barry - is set to play Metamorpho. He joins the previously announced David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner.

In the comics, Metamorpho, AKA Rex Mason, was a misunderstood hero who could "transmutate elements in his body into various forms, taking those properties on as powers. After first being an archeologist, his abilities set him on the path of heroism. He later became a detective and a founding member of the supergroup known as the Outsiders."

In addition to playing loveable criminal NoHo Hank on Barry, Carrigan appeared in 2021 comedic drama Fatherhood, as well as 2020’s Bill & Ted Face the Music. He will next be seen in murder-mystery film The Adults alongside Evan Rachel Wood and Josh Gad.

Gunn has since taken to Twitter to confirm the news.

The addition of all of these characters to a "solo" Superman film is sure to raise a few eyebrows, but Gunn insists that they have all been chosen for a very good reason, and haven't been included simply to set up future DCU projects.

What do you make of Carrigan's casting? Drop us a comment down below.

At this point the movie should be called DC Legacy.

@SonOfAGif - Kinda agree. And I'm really not sure general audiences are ready for the eclectic comic-book-y version of Superman that it seems Gunn has in mind. Hope I'm wrong and this turns out dope though.

@SonOfAGif -
I feel James Gunn NEEDS team dynamics in his films, his success so far has been on team films so he has not really had to focus on individually developing the characters and can just use angst and arguments as a method of bypassing creative writing - e.g. have a team shout at each other as opposed to actually developing them as a team.

I would not be surprised if he's taking the same approach here, where Superman will wind up being part of a team of other Superheroes or at the least working alongside them for a majority of the film. It's clearly not going to be a Superman solo movie and with 'The Authority' presumably following on from this film we're easily starting this universe with around 10-20 Superheroes already existing in the first film.

@Humby - honestly I think a lot of people seem to forget that a large amount of superhero comics and animation have small cameos from characters in them all the time. It doesn't mean they'll be in the entire story. It just fleshes out the world they live in by showing that other heroes and villains exist. It's always been a problem in the marvel films that when there's big stuff happening all the other heroes are for some reason absent from a world ending crisis, bank robbery, bridge collapse, etc. I for one would welcome other heroes having a presence so that the world feels lived in and not so happenstance.

I dont know why so many assume that Gunn is taking away from Supermans screen time with these characters? It just gives Supes more characters to play off of than just regular humans. I'm glad he's not sticking to the typical only one hero allowed in a movie vibe that we've seen countless times.

@Scarilian - Good analysis, because it really is a pattern. I'll keep this in mind.

@Nemesis17then - With all these characters he's got a LOT of story to tell in just one movie.

Guess this means Outsiders is on the way.

@MCUKnight11 - Since they've already said Mr Terrific is in this movie, I think it's most likely that they're setting up some version of The Terrifics instead imo, seeing as they're both on that team.

Carrigan was incredible as NoHo Hank, especially in season 3. Really happy to see him nominated for an Emmy too. Beyond bizarre we're getting all these castings before a Lex Luthor though.

@tmp3 - I would have preferred him as Lex, it takes a masterful chrome dome to pull off Luthor
