SUPERMAN: LEGACY Adds Isabela Merced As Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi As Mr. Terrific & Nathan Fillion As Guy Gardner

We had heard that Superman: Legacy was going to feature more super-powered characters than just the Man of Steel himself, but we didn't realize it would be this many more!

Following the recent news that David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan have been cast as Clark Kent and Lois Lane, Vanity Fair has announced that Isabela Merced will play Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi will play Mister Terrific and Nathan Fillion has signed on as Green Lantern Guy Gardner.

Mr. Terrific was mentioned in a previous report, but the other two will surely come as surprise additions.

Legacy is really starting to look more like a Justice League movie than a solo Superman adventure (remember, the Authority will also be involved), although we still don't know how significant a role these other heroes will have.

This report doesn't shed much light on the above, but does mention that Fillion will sport Gardner's signature bowl haircut from the comics! It also confirms that a Green Lantern TV series is still in the works for the Max streaming service, but that will feature Hal Jordan and John Stewart.

Fillion, who is a regular Gunn collaborator, previously played TDK in The Suicide Squad, and more recently has a small sole in GOTG Vol. 3. Merced will likely be best known for playing Dora the Explorer in The Lost City of Gold, while Gathegi played Darwin in X-Men: First Class and Laurent in the Twilight movies.

VF also notes that several characters from the previous era of DC-based films and shows, including Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), Peacemaker (John Cena) and Blue Beetle (Xolo Maridueña), will be "grandfathered in to the new universe."

“The good news is, if you've seen nothing that we've done before, you can watch Superman Legacy, you can watch Creature Commandos, you can watch Peacemaker season two, and you can watch Blue Beetle. All of that," DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran tells Vanity Fair. “We are trying to minimize audience confusion and maximize their enjoyment.”

What do you make of these casting picks? Drop us a comment down below. Superman: Legacy is scheduled to begin shooting early next year.

I'm so excited for this new imagining of the DC Universe !

So this is a team up film....in a solo Superman movie. Got it!

@Forthas - It's coming off as a other Black Adam.

@Forthas -

I know you don't like the direction this is going and have voiced what should have been done. But do you plan to see this or do you not wanna contribute to the box office of this movie?
Forthas
Forthas - 7/11/2023, 6:32 PM
@SonOfAGif - I kind of feel that way too. To be honest the superheroes on that film were a bright spot. But in this case I would rather Superman be the focus.

@TheBlueMorpho - I don't like the direction. At this point I will go see it. But if the trailers look like trash and it seems like a joke fest I am sitting it out.

@Forthas - My issue with how WB and Writer/Directors have pushed for a shared universe is the overstuffed heroes. Rather than build the universe from the ground up. They want to have it already built in another character's movie with zero character development. How can the general audience care for these characters if the studio just throws them into a solo movie that they had no business being in?

@SonOfAGif - I agree with you. I am not even opposed to a cameo or two. The Batman focused on....the Batman and had ONE cameo by Catwoman who he could play off of. That is fine but it seems like there are between three and seven super powered beings not even including Lex Luthor. Sounds a tad bit messy.

@TheHumanSpider2 - You know not of whom you speak. They have redefined stupidity when it comes to superhero films. Remember this is the same organization that f*cked up the Burton inspired Batman films, the Donner inspired Superman films and most recently the entire main DC library of heroes that are now the constant butt of jokes.

@Forthas - Catwoman wasn't a cameo

@Forthas - yeah wtf is this?
Forthas
Forthas - 7/11/2023, 8:34 PM
@Slotherin - When I say cameo I mean it in the broadest sense. The character is well known and she is appearing in a solo Batman film.
Forthas
Forthas - 7/11/2023, 8:37 PM
@grif - I don't know what it is. People thinking ths is a bunch of cameos but I don't see how a Superman film will have some threat where the other super powered people in the world would not be involved.
TheLight
TheLight - 7/11/2023, 9:12 PM
@Forthas - Exactly. This doesn't even feel like this is even for Superman anymore.

Next thing you know, the damn Legion from the 31th Century will pop up at Clark's apartment revealing to him his alien heritage.

@Forthas - This was a quote from this article:

"remember, the Authority will also be involved"

Wasn't there an article just this morning showing a tweet if Gunn replying to a fan and saying that he never said The Authority would be in this?

@Forthas - I've always thought of cameo appearances as just real quick appearances.

Someone like Catwoman is an actual important character in the movie.

I've always looked at it as different tiers:

Characters - These would he characters in the movies with fleshed out roles that belong in the film because they play important parts.

Guest Stars - They can be characters like Black Widow in Cap 2: The Winter Soldier. She's definitely a character with an important part to play I'm the film. But she's also not always a part of Cap's solo world. She's a guest star from another franchise.

Cameos - these would be like quick appearances, like Stark showing up at the end of The Incredible Hulk, or Fury showing up in Iron Man 1 and 2.

@TheLight - I TOTALLY AGREE!!! The focus should be on Superman. Having other super heroes distracts from that. Even having the Authority AND Lex Luthor pulls too much screentime away from Superman let alone three super heroes. Big mistake!
Forthas

@CorndogBurglar -

Isn't James Gunn the one who tweeted...
"“Met with Ben yesterday precisely because he wants to direct & we want him to direct; we just have to find the right project.”
- James Gunn (December 14, 2022)

...and later Ben Affleck stated

“I would not direct something for the [James] Gunn DC. Absolutely not. I have nothing against James Gunn. Nice guy, sure he’s going to do a great job. I just wouldn’t want to go in and direct in the way they’re doing that. I’m not interested in that”

But we should believe him now?

@Forthas - But I do think it's funny that we have one person on the site reporting one thing and another saying something different.
Forthas
Forthas - 7/11/2023, 11:03 PM
@CorndogBurglar - You are probably correct when you define Cameo as a quick appearance. I typically use it to mean any non starring role. I think the problem is yje definition of quick. I would count marlon Brando's appearance in the first Superman as a cameo. It is a bit more than a one and done scene, but less than a major part. But I concead the point. We do not know whether these are cameos but given the caliber of actors if it is a cameo then it is building toward future appearances...just like when we saw Ezra Miller, Jason Mamoa, and Gal Gadot when we first saw BvS.
Forthas
Forthas - 7/11/2023, 11:08 PM
@CorndogBurglar - I think that people misinterpret things and they are reporting on an industry that spins facts as a business daily practice. So people are bound to get facts wrong or misinterpret them.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 7/12/2023, 3:21 AM
@Forthas - See, I would agree that Marlon Brando was a cameo. Same with Miller and Mamoa in BvS. But I would have considered Gadot a guest appearance, because she actually plays a pretty decent sized role in the film, and without her certain things couldn't have happened the same.

So yeah, I guess it just depends on what people consider to be a "short" enough amount of time, or amount of importance.
