SUPERMAN: LEGACY Fan Favorite Jacob Elordi Turned Down Superman Audition Because Role Was "Too Dark"

Despite being an apparent frontrunner to play Clark Kent in Superman: Legacy, Euphoria star Jacob Elordi has now confirmed he's not interested in superhero movies and turned down the chance to audition...

Shortly after the news broke that Henry Cavill's time as Superman had ended, we found ourselves inundated with potential candidates to take the British actor's place as the Man of Tomorrow in DC Studios' new DCU.

Jacob Elordi's name was among them and it took no time at all for him to emerge as an apparent "frontrunner." Fan art depicting him as the Man of Steel also began popping up across social media and, given how prevalent it was, you'd be forgiven for thinking he'd been cast!

Even Superman: Legacy and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn had to take to Twitter/X to say, "My thoughts are no one has been cast as Superman yet. Casting, as is almost always the case with me, will happen after the script is finished or close to finished, and it isn't. We'll announce a few things in not too long, but the casting of Superman won't be one of them."

Ultimately, the role went to David Corenswet and, if recent photos are any indication, the Cavill lookalike is training hard for his transformation into the iconic DC Comics character.

GQ recently spoke with the Euphoria star and learned he grew up admiring The Dark Knight stars Christian Bale and Heath Ledger.

However, when he was asked whether he could see himself in a superhero movie, Elordi responded, "Not particularly, no. I’ve always been told to say a rounded answer or my agent will get mad at me. 'Anything can happen!'"

"And obviously anything can happen, but at this stage in my life, I don’t see myself having any interest in that. I like to make what I would watch, and I get very restless watching those movies. And then I’m supposed to finish it with: 'Never say never!'"

Could he just be mad that he missed out on playing Superman? Well, despite all the speculation, the Australian actor confirms he turned down the opportunity to audition for Gunn's upcoming reboot.

"Well, they asked me to read for Superman," he confirms. "That was immediately, 'No, thank you.' That’s too much. That’s too dark for me."

Too dark?! Unless he's joking (and it's hard to say when this is a print interview), this raises some questions about how Gunn is approaching the DCU's Superman. Still, Elordi is unlikely to have even read a single page of Superman: Legacy's script, so he's likely just referring to the baggage which comes with such an iconic role.

Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

David Corenswet is playing the Man of Steel, while Rachel Brosnahan has been tapped to star as Lois Lane. other recent casting additions include Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho.

Skyler Gisondo is rumoured to be playing Jimmy Olsen and we recently learned Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 star Kurt Russell may be in the running for Jor-El.

Superman: Legacy is currently set to be released in theaters on July 11. 2025.

First page of the script had this homage to a beloved classic Superman scene.

I get it who wants to deal with cbm weird ass fans that think the movies revolve around them
Origame
Origame - 11/13/2023, 9:41 AM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - yes, why listen to the fans you're literally making a product for them to buy when you can instead listen to yes men like you? 🙄
Urubrodi
Urubrodi - 11/13/2023, 9:45 AM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - Well... the product should appeal to someone, otherwise you're not gonna sell it. If you go against what the fanbase wants or likes, then what's the point?
supermanrex
supermanrex - 11/13/2023, 9:57 AM
@Urubrodi - here is the thing. you cant and shouldn't go verbatim to fans wishes. you know why? because for every 500 fans you make happy with a decision you piss off another 500 cause they think that's the wrong direction. i think by getting a general feel for what people want and mix it all together is the best approach. even then... people will come to these comments and go crazy unleashing how terrible it is. actors dont want to deal with that cause fans have gotten toxic and are getting more toxic with direct attacks and threats on people behind the movies.

@Origame - The product is not made for fans. It's made for everyone, unless you mean to say DC is pandering now?
Origame
Origame - 11/13/2023, 10:06 AM
@SpiderParker - appealing to everyone means you appeal to no one. That's why you need to focus on the core audience while making it interesting and accessible enough to attract the general audience.

Phases 1-3 got this.
Urubrodi
Urubrodi - 11/13/2023, 10:10 AM
@supermanrex - Not really, because it's never that black and white. You always know what the majority wants because it's almost never that complicated. Everyone could see from a mile away that The Flash and The Marvels would not appeal to most people for many reasons and the studios decided to take the risk anyways.
SpiderParker
SpiderParker - 11/13/2023, 10:26 AM
@Origame - Core audience, like a few thousand die hard comic fans? The fanbase doesn't know what they want and if you continue to give people what they want, the value is not there anymore. You wanted multiverse, well you got it, now you want it to be over. You wanted self contained stories, you got it. You wanted more dramatic, you got it. You wanted experimentation, you got it. Now you want it all to go back to the way it was?

It's a movie and it's a CBM, it's not one or the other. Both Marvel and DC are doing the same thing but the audience is not just the fanbase, its everyone. Humans are eternally unsatisfied. No matter what you do, you will always fall short, if not now then soon enough. Making a good movie is more important than making a good CBM. A good CBM doesn't necessarily mean a good movie and vice versa but one of those two give us a quality product, other is fanservice. A great one manages both.

@SpiderParker - John wick says hi.

That gave fans what they want and expect multiple times and it's one of the most successful action franchises of all time.

Terminator keeps bringing back Arnold, and he continues to be the one element universally praised about the movies.

And again, phases 1-3 all listened to fans and even used fan theories as the basis for entire plot points.
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 11/13/2023, 10:40 AM
@SpiderParker - thank you cause explaining that the small niche of die hard fans don’t get a movie to a 200 mill+ box office feels like rocket science to people on this site

SW is pretty self destructing cause they’re leaning too hard into listening to the “fans”
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 11/13/2023, 10:42 AM
@Origame - way too miss the point and definitely not a yes man, I’ll gladly shit on some marvel stuff I don’t like such as love and thunder , eternals was mid , etc etc this isn’t that serious as you all take it
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 11/13/2023, 10:43 AM
@Urubrodi - cause the fanbase alone doesn’t hold up a franchise
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 11/13/2023, 10:45 AM
@Origame - also phase 1-3 did not listen to the fans lmao they did what they wanted, if it was up to the fans guardians wouldn’t have happened, iron man 2 would’ve been strictly demon in a bottle , fans had 0 to do with spider man in civil war happening , the list goes on and on
SpiderParker
SpiderParker - 11/13/2023, 10:51 AM
@Origame - So, you want Marvel and DC to just drop in to the movie, ignore everything and put non-stop action to pander to fans so that they can enjoy some nice visuals brought to life and then forget all about it after a few days? Thats what Snyder did, look where DCEU is now. If Arnold is praised, it doesn't make the movie any better.

Sure, Marvel listened to fans, but not always and thats why fans keep coming back cause they expect atleast a little mystery. How many times can someone enjoy the same old Snow White story? Even casual fans can figure out the plot points if they use google, so certain things need to be changed but ofcourse, not everything either. It can't be a one to one translation neither zero. There needs to be a balance. It's not just CBM fans nor just casual fans. Has to be both, or it will end up being none.

Example? DC prefered to go for fanservice first and story later, now it's rebooted. Marvel had a balance, people loved it, now it is (according to fans) not looking out for fans other than cameos, so they want it rebooted.
SpiderParker
SpiderParker - 11/13/2023, 10:57 AM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - Yes, I know, these "fans" have too much demands, they can never be fulfilled cause thats what they expect to fulfill them. TBH, Marvel is still listening to fans, but fans still don't know what they want. They got alot of what they wished for, now they are like a kid on a halloween night, too much toffee, not sure what to do with them. I'll say, Marvel is going bad cause it is still listening to fans too much than even before and not being able to do what they want wholeheartedly.
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 11/13/2023, 11:02 AM
@SpiderParker - she hulk is an example , people wanted her got her in authentic form (cause they’re always begging for comic accuracy except Peter being happy / not broke , Matt being happy , pretty much anyone being happy) but they also clearly wanted her to be a hulk substitute not actually to be she hulk
Origame
Origame - 11/13/2023, 11:14 AM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - yet you're always here defending the mcu
Origame
Origame - 11/13/2023, 11:18 AM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - lol, those are your examples? A handful of films that weren't purely what fans wanted and you insist thats enough to say they weren't listening to fans?

Hell, even marvel themselves weren't sure if guardians would work, hence why they made a deal to sell the metal from the prison scene to help recoup the cost. And iron man 2? That's you're example? Literally the second worst movie in the mcu prior to phase 4? 🤣

And it's because of fans that the russo's and feige were fighting to get spiderman in civil war. Wtf are you on?
Origame
Origame - 11/13/2023, 11:20 AM
@SpiderParker - ...no because that's not what the fans want here. That's not how the comics they love work. All they want is the stories from the comics more or less adapted faithfully. It's really not rocket science.
SpiderParker
SpiderParker - 11/13/2023, 11:22 AM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - Sadly, fans have too much power in regards to their beloved IP. Not box office ofcourse, but the word of mouth and their vocal vindictive enemity. Fans can harm their own beloved IP in the name of saving the IP. In many cases, general audience don't care, in others, they get carried away too. SnyderCult's JL is the perfect example of this, releasing that inferior version only made it worse for the DCEU. Both were trash, why do you want a different kind of the same trash that will do more harm than good for the fans, for the community, for the cinematic universe and for the IP. This guy probably read how the Cult was toxic, which is why he turned it down.
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 11/13/2023, 11:25 AM
@Origame - guy has opinion on things he likes and doesn’t like breaking news omg.

and no I’m not continually defending the mcu I’m just not gonna go full it’s the end of the world over stuff 24/7 I criticize what I don’t like and praise what I do.
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 11/13/2023, 11:26 AM
@Origame - literally every mcu decision phase 1-3 is the studio going what it wanted , but if it helps you to feel like you contributed knock yourself out. Go apply for that writing credit
SpiderParker
SpiderParker - 11/13/2023, 11:27 AM
@Origame - Yeah, it's not rocket science, cause ofcourse you know how difficult rocket science must be since you are an expert on rocket science, right? How about you make a story and show it to me since it is going to be far less difficult than rocket science, it will be a piece of cake for you, yeah? How long do you need to adapt a comic faithfully that can please fans and GA? Care to eat your words or show if you can walk the talk?
Origame
Origame - 11/13/2023, 11:30 AM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - thats literally 95% of the time I see you here anymore.
Origame
Origame - 11/13/2023, 11:33 AM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - yes, and it just so happens those decisions line up with how the comics went and what fans want most of the time.

You know, like they revealed that fan theory about the kid in iron man 2 was a young Peter Parker. So far it hasn't been in a movie, so it's not like they're selling us on that fact. They literally just revealed it to make fans happy. Truly it's just studios doing what they want 🙄
Origame
Origame - 11/13/2023, 11:33 AM
@SpiderParker - today I learned adapting comics to movies is equivalent to rocket science 🤣
SpiderParker
SpiderParker - 11/13/2023, 11:34 AM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - I know right, MCU is listening to fans and giving people more freedom creatively than ever before and people are blinded to that fact. If anything, MCU should stop listening. Some want more experimentation, some want more 1 to 1 adaptation. The [frick] do people want really, they want too many thing, you listen to one, you betray the other. This is IM3 all over again, people bitched about the formula and got IM3 and GA loved it but fans hated it when they themselves begged for exactly that movie. They want to be surprised but they also want not to be too surprised. The [frick]?
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 11/13/2023, 11:38 AM
@Origame - now tell me the movie they revealed that info oh because it’s a nothing detail. They haven’t done what the comics are like most of the movies the mcu isn’t the following the comics or even trying to be similar since early phase 2
SpiderParker
SpiderParker - 11/13/2023, 11:41 AM
@Origame - No, today you learned, you shouldn't compare two things that you have clearly zero idea about. Cause kiddo, right now, I could very easily say rocket science is piece of cake for me and writing is tough, could you argue with me about it? So, unless you have knowledge of both, your opinion and comparison of both is just embarrassing. Come back when you know how to drive a car and a plane before saying which one is easier.
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 11/13/2023, 11:41 AM
@SpiderParker - just waiting on the next backlash probably when X men tackles the issue of prejudices of society and the fans act like that’s never been part of their stories.

It’s actually really funny cause they’re the first group to call characters Mary sues and then will detail how they want X character to be a Mary sure
Origame
Origame - 11/13/2023, 11:47 AM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - as I said, they didn't reveal that through a movie. Feige just told us it's Canon. Because it's literally not about selling movies there, it's about pleasing fans.

And what are you talking about? Civil War is civil war, only changing some details based on where the mcu was at and the characters introduced. Infinity wars is basically an adaptation of infinity from the comics with elements of the original infinity gauntlet arc. The first avengers movie had loki as the main villain taking control of the hulk as part of his plan, just like the comics. They had bucky become the winter soldier after being taken into custody and used as a Russian super soldier. Even including lines straight from the comics.

All this is telling me is that you just don't read the comics.

@Origame - ok and now do the rest of the mcu origins I’ll wait .
Origame
Origame - 11/13/2023, 1:00 PM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - ...you mean like captain america and iron man, who both had their origins straight from the comics? Or Thor that only simplified the origin by removing Donald Blake, but otherwise how it was in the comics? Or hulk which even kept the gamma research part of the origin? Or black widow being a villain before being convinced by hawkeye to reform? Or strange being a cocky surgeon before an accident destroyed his hands making him search the world for a cure leading him to the ancient one to learn magic?

Should I keep going?
