SUPERMAN Star Nicholas Hoult Praises SMALLVILLE Star Michael Rosenbaum And Teases His Lex Luthor Prep

SUPERMAN star Nicholas Hoult has shared his appreciation for Smallville star Michael Rosenbaum's take on Lex Luthor while commenting on his DCU preparation, working with filmmaker James Gunn, and more.

X-Men: First Class star Nicholas Hoult will play the DCU's Lex Luthor in James Gunn's SUPERMAN reboot, and he follows in the footsteps of actors like Gene Hackman, Jon Cryer, Jesse Eisenberg, and Michael Rosenbaum.

The latter played Lex for longer than anyone, starring in 154 episodes of Smallville across 10 seasons. He left the show after season 7, though, later returning for a guest spot in the show's final year on television (attempts to continue Lex's story without the actor were incredibly hit-and-miss).

Rosenbaum recently interviewed Hoult for his long-running "Inside of You" podcast and, while the British actor couldn't say much about his DCU debut, he did heap praise on his predecessor.

"I think the first-ever Lex I saw was you. Smallville was on...I was 11, 12, I guess," Hoult started. "That was the show I would watch and see my first iterations of Superman and Lex in all those stories. Since, I've seen Richard Donner's movies and all the other ones and performances."

"I love [your performance as Lex]. It's the best, yeah," he continued. "You did inhabit him with such depth and charm. That ability to switch which makes him dangerous and formidable and a great opponent. I just love what you did."

Elsewhere in the interview, Hoult talks about shaving his head, the audition process, and his hopes to do Lex justice on screen. Asked by Rosenbaum about his preparation and whether he watched other performances, he added, "Yeah, I tried to get a viewpoint on everything. The prep always changes. It can go off on weird tangents."

"[James Gunn's] ability to keep things fun and alive and try things in the moment," Hoult said of their collaboration thus far. "That's something I really enjoy."

Uh oh. I was just about to sign in and respond to that Chris Evans Winter Soldier article, and then this popped up. There was a story or an article or a phucking Twitter post or some damn "Threads" post or one of those things, or maybe even one of you commenter made it up, stating that James's Gunn said that....OH! It was James Gunn himself. Gunn himself said it point-blqnk that Rosenbaum's Lex was his favorite Lex, and that Gunn would take some inspiration from that portrayal and apply it to Nicholas' version of Luthor.

Anyway, off to go praise Winter Soldier, the best Marvel Studios movie by far, and arguably the best live-action comic book adaptation ever.

Was Lex Luther black in the animated series? I was always confused by that. As a kid I always knew he was white, but on the series he looked a bit darker.

@HammerLegFoot - I say he was black. But they never mentioned it or anything like that, then again its a kids show. Growing up though as a kid watching it, I accepted he was just black despite other versions of him being white.

Regardless, my favorite Lex and like Kevin Conroy's Batman, whenever I hear Clancy Brown's voice, hes always Lex. Did such a brilliant job with him, including in Justice League Unlimited.

Well , he’s definitely the best live action Lex imo so I’m glad Hoult is of the same opinion also…

Hopefully he is taking inspiration from that (alongside the comics) for his & Gunn’s version of the character aswell.

Rosenbaum (with Cryer as a close second) are my favorites so far!!.

Rosenbaum being his biggest inspiration and I'm guessing actually being able to pick his brain about the character gives me a lot of hope for Hoult's take on Lex.

Nobody embodied Lex as a performer more than Denzel, don't care about the race switch; he's charismatic, charming, intimidating and has gravitas. I'm sad I'll never get to see it.

I like Hoult but I don't know if he has the range for Lex. Hope he's great and he's written well. Lex should be an ace in the hole character, he's too important to [frick] up like last time.
