SUPERMAN Star Nicholas Hoult Reveals Specific Inspiration He's Pulling From ALL-STAR SUPERMAN For Lex Luthor

SUPERMAN has assembled an impressive cast with Nicholas Hoult - who supposedly auditioned to play the Man of Tomorrow - tapped to take on the role of Lex Luthor.

The actor, who took on the role of Beast in X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse, and Dark Phoenix, is thought to have also been among those who tried out for the title role in The Batman before the role went to Robert Pattinson. Now, he's playing one of the DCU's greatest villains.

Talking to Smallville star Michael Rosenbaum, Hoult revealed that he's been bulking up to star as SUPERMAN's Lex Luthor. Why? Well, it all comes down to a key moment in All-Star Superman, a comic we know has inspired James Gunn

"I have been working out. There’s that bit in 'All-Star Superman' where he talks about his muscles being real and hard work and all that," Hoult explained. "I kind of took that as a little bit of a fuel for the fire."

The actor later added that, despite adding muscle to his frame, he isn't anticipating having any shirtless scenes in the reboot.

We're intrigued to see what Hoult brings to the table as Lex, particularly as the villain is one we've seen match wits with the hero on screen countless times before. If he dons his power suit, that will be a long-overdue game-changer, as we've yet to see him really go toe-to-toe with Supes physically.

All-Star Superman is a comic book series by writer Grant Morrison and artist Frank Quitely, published by DC Comics between 2005 and 2008. The 12-issue storyline reimagines Superman's mythology, portraying him as an idealized hero facing his mortality after exposure to solar radiation.

The series explores the hero's final days as he completes tasks and confronts adversaries while preparing for his impending death.

SUPERMAN tells the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

David Corenswet is playing the Man of Steel, while Rachel Brosnahan has been tapped to star as Lois Lane. Other recent casting additions include Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White.

SUPERMAN is currently set to be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.

@KennKathleen - yeah. he'll nail it. Hoult was epically underused in the fox-men films.

He has the ability to have the subtle nuances to perform a great lex.

@lazlodaytona - The casting for this Supes movie has been top notch that's for sure.If the script is just as good as the casting ended up being...this movie is going to be a massive hit.

Just the Lex I've been waiting for on the big screen!

I'm looking forward to his Lex. Hope we get a bit of the psycho intellectual Lex that kinda toys with everybody.

@QuietStorm - I want this scene as well or something similar, hope to hell they don't play him up for laughs though.

@HashTagSwagg - I said it when Snyder got a hold of Superman, that I hoped DC would do their best to do as close of a play by play of their animated movies, just in live action. With this huge cast we hear from Gunn, adapting this animated film would be a good idea too. Especially this scene!

Hoult is a GREAT actor so i'm excited to see what he can bring to the table as Lex.

He's gonna dominate as Lex. Also, Frank Quietly is such a brilliant artist.

He gets it. One of, if not my favorite, take on Lex

Superman is a threat to human ingenuity and accomplishment is such an interesting angle for Lex to work from

@GhostDog - I feel the only live action version of Lex that has had this characterization to an extent is Cryer’s

@TheVisionary25 - Hopefully Hoult and Gunn can really build on it in an even bigger way. Rationalize Lex enough to where you do understand the fear in this human way

Ultimately, you expose how Lex seems to think Superman is this great distraction to the world by showing how distracted he himself is with him. Supes is a threat to what men can achieve. He would have "saved the world" if not for Superman being there. He is just a raging, insecure narcissist and xenophobe whose noble ambitions of fighting Superman to "fight for humanity" are made hollow by the fact that he's simply evil.

@GhostDog - yep exactly

He’s someone that ultimately boils down to being “ it shoukd have been me then him”

@McMurdo - Same. I've had my issues with Gunn but I think he understands the opportunity he has here: to make the DEFINITIVE, MODERN SUPERMAN film. And he has the talent to pull it off. The way he handles the emotional aspect of superhero features is always done with real care.

Since All Star is also inspiring Gunn , hopefully that lends itself to Lex’s characterization in the film too…

Lex is someone who feels like people need to be able to solve their own problems and faith in themselves rather then looking to Superman with reverence to solve their or the worlds problems…

Ironically , he himself does nothing to help others thus can be a hypocrite masking his petty jealously & hatred for Superman under some sort of higher justification imo.

Anyway , can’t wait to see Gunn & Hoult’s take!!.

@TheVisionary25 - i hope so too. If i remember in all star superman he admits to liking clark but hating superman. Which would be a very fun take to showcase on film. For clark to be considered a friend and ally yet also an enemy to lex.

@lazlodaytona - metallo would be awesome, one of my faves. It could be cool of that's the first time that Clark learns about his weakness if made well enough.

@RegularPoochie - 100% agreed on both. and with how popular Iron Man is but he's outta the picture for a while people might like to see an evil version of an IM-type. and him first learning about K would be great.

I've been hoping for this guy since the days of Superman Returns to play Lex.

I guess it'll never happen in this universe ... But I hope Hoult does well. I think he's a capable actor, I just don't know if he has the charisma for Lex but I hope he proves me wrong. Hopefully the writing is up to par. Lex is too important to [frick] up.

Damn good to hear, reminds me of the Clancy Brown Luthor from the animated show that was physically intimidating on top of the intellect.
