Flash Season 2 Preview - ZOOM Is Coming!

With the CW’s Flash now 10 weeks (70 Days) from returning, I decided to put together my own list of theories for the upcoming season based on everything we know so far.

SPOILERS ABSOLUTELY FOLLOW if you are waiting to watch the first season on Blu-ray/DVD or Netflix.

The Vortex/Singularity:

Obviously based on the ending of the first season of The Flash, Barry enters the singularity to try to close it from the inside. My thought is that Barry exits the singularity in Earth-2 instead of his original universe. From everything we’ve heard in interviews about all the new heroes and villains coming from Earth-2, I just can’t see how Barry will go back to the correct timeline. Heck, even Wells/Eobard is still alive in the universe he arrives in.

 Strange voice from the trailer:
In the Season 2 Comic-Con trailer, we hear a voice say, “Central City doesn’t need you to be Henry Allen’s son, it needs you to be The Flash”. Later in the trailer, we hear Jay Garrick’s voice and it sounds completely different than the earlier quote. After going back and listening to it over and over a few times, I can tell that it is John Wesley Shipp’s voice with a lit bit of sound work. I can’t imagine Henry Allen referring to himself in the third person like that, so it only leaves the 1990 Flash. Whether it’s a Speed Force illusion or Barry goes briefly through the 90’s timeline, he will meet the original TV Flash briefly.

The Particle Accelerator:
With Al Rothstein, and very likely Ralph Dibny, Grant Emerson, Bea De Costa, and Will Everett still alive on Earth-2, this timeline’s Reverse Flash may not have built the Particle Accelerator yet, or maybe The Pied Piper got construction delayed. We may see people getting powers in more of a comic book fashion, perhaps even magic (science we don’t understand yet) related.

Harrison Wells/Eobard Thawne/Reverse Flash:
Obviously from the Season 2 trailer, we know wherever Barry ends up, he is going to confront Wells immediately when he sees him. It may not be in the premiere, but it will definitely be before the mid-season hiatus. I can’t say that I really know much about what his intentions are this season, but it would not surprise me if he dies in the season ending battle against Zoom. I can only see the show wanting to redeem his character. And if Reverse Flash dies, I’m pretty sure it will set up a season 3 storyline where Barry is in prison after some being blamed for it.

Cisco Ramon/Vibe:
I’m pretty sure Cisco is still going to be working at Star Labs in season 2. I’m guessing that all of his scenes will also take place on Earth-One, because he may not know Barry on Earth-2. I think it’s entirely possible that they may even take a Fringe season 4 approach and have Cisco see Barry in his dreams from the other Earth and try to bring him back. Cisco is also pretty much going to be Vibe at the end of the season, there’s just no good way to stretch it out any farther.

Caitlin Snow/Killer Frost:
When Caitlin talks about not coming back to Star Labs in the season 2 trailer, I am pretty sure she is talking about Barry going missing and not Ronnie dying. Victor Garber told IGN that Ronnie would be around in Legends of Tomorrow, so I am guessing he dies in the Flash mid-season finale or the pilot for that. Andrew Kreisberg also said in the past that Caitlin becoming Killer Frost would be making a bad decision in a bar, and I’m guessing that is Sinners and Saints that we saw in episode 22. I would not be surprised if she ends up drugged and taken by H.I.V.E. for her New 52 origin seeing as Arrow is using them as the villains this year.

Joe West, Iris West, and Patty Spivot

I'm not exactly sure what Joe and Iris are going to have story wise this season besides mourning Eddie.  I think we will learn what happened to Iris's mom. Of course we will also figure out how Wally is related to Joe and Iris when he is introduced. As far as Patty Spivot goes, I'm pretty sure she will be playing the love interest all season for Barry and I could definitely see her becoming the female Flash from the comics in season 3.

Eddie Thawne:

I have a couple of thoughts about Eddie.

Maybe he is saved somehow by the Time Masters and ends up being the reason Rip Hunter finds out about the time problems leading to Legends of Tomorrow.

OR

Eddie ends up absorbing the Speed Force energy in the singularity, heals like Barry and becomes the villain this season, Zoom. To me, this seems more likely because I just can’t see them saving the character for however many more years to bring back. It was also stated by someone in an earlier interview that Rick Cosnett left the show for personal reasons and may not have been “killed off” otherwise. He wanted to be Iris’s hero and using all of the blue to merge the Zoom character with Cobalt Blue’s appearance would be a great way to re-interpret the story. I just can't see them using Wells as the villain to be discovered again and the Comic-Con trailer really makes it sound like Wells will be working with Barry again. It is also too soon to introduce Hunter Zolomon with no build up or not having his sister already cast. I guess it could be future Barry or Daniel West to help introduce Wally like his New 52 origin, but that seems unlikely at this point.

I saved my favorite part for last!

Jay Garrick/Flash:

Obviously we know he is a little younger and will be a mentor to Barry this season just like in the comics. I also think Jay is going to be around for the rest of the series, so it makes a little more sense why he was cast younger. I also see the Flash Day parade being for Jay Garrick and Barry interrupts it coming out of the Speed Force, starts fighting Atom Smasher. That is why he still has the red circle in set pictures, but his new season 2 costume has the white circle.

Flash Test Pilot Theory - Savitar/Vandal Savage:

Savitar was a DC comics villain that was a Cold War test pilot whose plane was struck by lighning and he gained Speed Force based powers. He became more of a cult leader and gained followers before eventually merging completely with the Speed Force energy itself. It would solve a lot of problems to merge Vandal Savage and Savitar. This would go a long way toward explaining why Vandal Savage is immortal, how he has gathered so many followers, and how he can travel through time to disrupt things in Legends of Tomorrow. If he is just immortal, I could imagine Cisco making a Highlander joke and maybe Sara cutting off his head.

My only other thoughts are:
  • Maybe Rip Hunter is the one who brings Barry back to Earth-One in the mid-season finale.
  • Barry is the one who saves Central City, but isn’t there to get credit for it.
  • It would not at all surprise me if Cisco ends up working with Captain Cold and Hawkgirl to protect Central City until Barry comes back to Earth One.
  • Oliver is too busy with finding Ray Palmer, Thea and Sara's resurrection sickness, the election, and H.I.V.E. to help bring Barry back.

Here is one other little Easter Egg from "The Flash is Born" episode from season 1.

It's a poster from the flashback scenes in the episode that says, "Wells Zoom". I have not seen this mentioned anywhere else on the net, so I put it in. Sorry the image is as sharp as I can get until the Blu-Ray comes out.

I had a ton of fun writing this, so I hope you enjoy reading it. Honestly, all of this could turn out to be completely wrong, and ridiculous fan speculation, but it’s still fun to think about. I will post a preview for Arrow season 3 tomorrow and one for Legends in December.

Let me know what you think might happen in Season 2 or any comments below.

THANK YOU FOR READING!
