Marvel Avengers Alliance has been around for awhile, having been released as a tie-in social media game for Marvel's The Avengers. The game has been set in its own universe, though it has specifically taken inspiration from the 616 (regular Marvel comics), and to a lesser extent, the MCU (movie universe). The movie connections have been fewer and far between, such as Sam Jackson Nick Fury and Clark Gregg Agent Coulson, but they have been releasing movie based 'Special Operations' to connect players with what's happening on the big screen, and to encourage them to go out and buy a ticket. Generally these SO's will incorporate MCU villains and heroes, or at least nods to the movies.

One example: At the time Iron Man 3 came out, the Special Operations villains were the 616 versions of Mandarin and Savin. New costumes were released for Iron Man and War Machine which directly reflected their 'Iron Patriot' and 'MK 42' movie suits. So it's a bit of intertwining of both universes. The new hero released with that Spec Ops was Rescue, or more specifically, Pepper Potts who's donning an Iron Man-esque suit of armor. This was undoubtedly a nod to a certain scene in that movie.

So, we've established that the game makers are getting specific plot details about the movies beforehand, as that event in the game dealt with Extremis, Savin's role, Rescue in the Armor, so on and so forth. Also! They're allowed to release previously unreleased information regarding Marvel events, as Thanos' son, Thane, was added to the game over a month ago in full regalia... while he's still in the process of being introduced for the first time in the comics. Oh! And also, Iron Man's MK 42 has the ability to call down an army of Iron Man suits to assist him in an attack, which is an obviously spoiler from the finale of the film. One thing they haven't done is directly contradict developments in the MCU.

Now, there is a fun little thing they do in this game with previous villains. If they have switched sides at some point and become heroes, the developers will release them in special lockboxes, essentially making them heroes you can use. Most lockbox villains were originally evil but now are heroes in the comics such as Magneto, Elektra, Omega Sentinel, and so on. We'll get back to that in a minute. For now, here's the current picture of Loki in the game:

Obviously, this his villainous attire. This specific iteration of the character has never been in a story arc where it would make sense to be included as a permanent hero. Young Loki is another matter, but we won't get into that.

On this fine Saturday afternoon (Oct. 12), it was revealed at New York Comic Con that Special Operations 14 will deal with movie Malekith and movie Kurse, while allowing you to unlock a new hero, movie Heimdall! What's more, none other than Loki Laufeyson will be introduced as the newest Lockbox hero! ...Hold on a second. Loki is no hero. Even if he assisted for a short duration to help with Malekith, it doesn't justify adding him into the game to team up with the likes of Spider-Man and Cyclops... This means that we will be using Loki to defeat the forces of Kurse and Malekith in the Spec Ops, and he will otherwise be fully playable until this game goes offline. So what's the big deal, you're thinking? Well, the thing is.. they're not releasing supervillain Loki in Lockboxes. THIS is Superhero Loki:

Pretty wild, eh? It would not make much sense to allow Loki to be a fulltime hero on your team if he betrays Thor at some point during the movie. Secondly, Hiddleston has admitted he had an idea to put in an additional Loki arc for the movie that they did indeed ended up adding, as seen here: http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/movienewsandreviews/news/?a=86724

So here is some not-so concrete evidence that Asgard may be getting another champion by movie's end.

Obvious conjecture, so I put it in Editorials. But with the way Avengers Alliance has been going, this is more than a little eyebrow-raising.

Well thought out, but I seriously doubt this. Based on what we've seen so far, Thor encounters the threat of Malekith, brings Jane Foster to Asgard for protection, complications arise where he's forced to ask Loki for help, Loki plays the 'good guy' for the next several scenes, but betrays Thor at the most crucial part of the plot and seriously harms either him, Jane, or probably both.

Just my two cents though. Interesting points, good article!

Uh Loki is a good guy in the comics now. It makes perfect sense to add him as a hero

Well thought out, and who knows...anything is possible in the world of comic book films. Awesome article.

Marvel doesn't have any good villains left. They're all Avengers and X-Men now.

That's true but you also haven't seen the movie. For all you know, you're only describing the first 2/3 of the film.

The Mandarin twist, Nieson being Ras, even Harry helping Spider-Man at the end of 3. Unless you have intimate knowledge of the script or have seen the movie, anything can happen.

Maybe the maiming scene is a trick to fool Malekith because Loki is good? Maybe he's just daydreaming. Could be anything.

Here's my theory: In Thor 2 Loki will indeed assist Thor in defeating Malekith in the finale, however, Loki will pay with his life in the end. Then in Thor 3, Thor will have to travel to Hel to reclaim Loki's soul because his knowledge will be needed to defeat the growing threat of Thanos who will be the big villain in Avengers 3.

Never turn your back on Loki. Read the comics long enough and that Loki is always for Loki.

Loki would assist in defending Asgard from someone and act heroic. It's not outside of his nature. Course the reason he always acts good is he has a motive later of no one is taking a throne that is rightfully his. Just Loki being Loki.

@ Avenger53

That first part about Loki dying is my prediction too.

@vandinejd

If you're talking about Young Loki, look at the pictures I posted. They're clearly not going in that direction. It's MCU Loki, in an MCU environment (Specifically a Thor 2 spec ops) and hes a hero.

Loki "pretends" to betray Thor in the movie. They showed that scene already. Loki will help Thor by pretending to betray him, then save him in an expected heroic effort.

@SauronsBane I wouldn't be so sure, for the longest time we had Ironman 3's plot worked out, and TDKR's, and Man of Steels, and all sorts of films, and most of the time we are off

I think loki will betray thor, malekith will be ready to kill jane, and loki will sacrifice himself to saver her? something like that

Loki is the god of deceit
This might just be a fan service because of his apparent cult following now. I know a few girls that would love to play as Laufeyson

I hope so. That way they could kill Thor in Avengers AoU and then start Thor 3 in Hel.

I REALLY WANT THEM TO START THOR 3 IN HEL. Hela finally gets her hands on her father but has to release him to protect her realm along with the other 8 from Surtur.

@McNyagano
Out of those villains the strongest and most memorable are
Ultron, and Thanos with Kane the Conquer being close the others are just not very memorable.
Out of the entire MCU, Spider-Man has the greatest and most memorable of all villains. He has one of the best rogue galleries in comics, period. He is just a little behind Batman and Superman in terms of great Villains. the fact is however, heroes are only as good as their villains and Marvel, without X-Men, Fantastic Four or Spider-Man are going to be lacking very soon since those 3 contain the better part of the great and memorable rogues galleries of the MCU while the other heroes, the ones with the most memorable rogues is Thor and Captain America not enough to make 6 more movies with that will all be as great as the last.
At the moment their universe keeps killing off or changing their villains drastically and in the long run this is going to hurt their franchises, especially Iron Man most of all whose villains become repetitive without the inclusion of magic, he has a very high ratio of tech based villains who essentially are great and dynamic characters by themselves but if you summarize them they are very much repetitive.

The movie MCU has at most 8-10 give or take more movies left in them without FF, X-Men or Spider-Man. Due to the villains of the other heroes not being as memorable or great which will lead to poorer quality of movie dynamic and lesser plots without becoming repetitive in nature of villains.
If just talking about the Avengers movies which there is sure to be 3 of and not much is known if there will be another(which would leave only 1 last option)
there are only 2 single villains left that would be a threat enough to up the ante and epicness of the movies, Ultron and Thanos, after that there is not much left to go to without the inclusion of the FF universe where there are dozens of cosmic entities to draw inspiration from for more team scenarios.
But with the team that is as is and will likely barely grow, after Thanos the only thing left is a villain team up to go against the avengers and with them(the MCU movie heroes) killing off their villains, there will not be much for that to happen.

The rogues galleries of all the current avengers owned by the MCU combined are not memorable enough nor have the same lasting power as the villains of Spider-Man, FF and the X-Men. A movie about a hero will only be as good as it can be based on its villain. The other villains you mentioned "Baren Zemo, Enchantress, Surtur, Ronan the Accuser," do not have the memorability nor staying power to be as strong dynamic as Thanos and ultron which will leave the MCU movie verse very weak after Avengers 3, if by then they do not have access to at least Spider-Man.

I rambled on too much, it is 4:30 AM, I am quite buzzed, have not slept in 36 hours and idk if I wrote the previous comment well. I hope I got my point across cause I feel I was skipping around too much to make my writing a cohesive narrative.

@gamecreatorjj, Well with TDKR, most people guessed from the leaked set photos that Marion Cotillard was actually Talia before actually seeing it. With STID, most people figured out Cumberbatch was actually Khan without the help of any leaks and before seeing it. IM3 is really the only film in recent memory to completely fool us, and I doubt Marvel would pull the same trick twice in back to back movies.

I could be wrong, of course, we need to actually wait to see the movie. But from the looks of it, since that's all we have to go on, the plot for Thor 2 looks pretty straightforward.

This didn't reveal shit. Any person who watched the trailers and television spots would know that Loki and Thor supposedly team-up to stop Malekith and his forces, Loki being a hero on the game just promotes what was already said in the trailer. There is also one scene in particular where this Loki being a hero is debunked.

And with Loki: Agent of Asgard solo comic coming down the line as part of Marvel NOW's second wave... well, Marvel does love their synergy.

"There is also one scene in particular where this Loki being a hero is debunked."

Actually, it doesn't debunk it at all, as we don't know if Loki is there willingly or is as much a captive as Jane at that point.

Its possible if in order to defeat Maliketh Loki must look as if he will betray Thor. Maybe for some reason in the end Loki will be looked at as somewhat of a good guy.
