Thanks to Reuters Canada, we now have more information on how financially successful the God of Thunder was at the box office this weekend:

Apparently, "Thor" gained about $66 million in tickets during its first three days in both the United States and Canada, according to studio estimates that were issued today.

The projected income for the movie during its opening weekend in the U.S. and Canada was anywhere in the range of $60 million to $70 million.

Despite its success, "Thor" was not able to top other popular movies like 2002's "Spider-Man" ($115 million) and 2008's "Iron Man" ($99 million), both of which were also the first movies of emerging franchises. However, it was able to overcome the 2003 "Hulk", which gained $62 million on it's opening weekend.

Last weekend, "Thor" gained $93 million overseas and grabbed the number 1 spot.

Also, thanks to TheIntruder and The Hollywood Reporter, we now know that "Thor" has a worldwide total of $242 million.

How can they come up with this estimate? It sounds a little premature. Sunday isn't over yet!

Yeah, there's still today, so perhaps it will gain a few more million even though it's Mother's Day...

Apparently a lot of people couldn't see Thor in 2d and were turned off by seeing it in 3d because of reviews that stated that the 3d doesn't do anything but take away from the movie and a lot of theaters were only showing it 3d so people ended up not going, so maybe if they had just released it in Imax like they did Iron Man it would've done a little better.... Either way its getting a sequel...

Ya man if when i go it isnt available in 2d i wont see it. I know that sounds dumb because i have wanted to see this forever but i just hat 3d. It gives me headaches, takes away from the movie, and makes you pay 3 to 5 dollars more per ticket to see the same movie.

I refuse. Hell, for me and my girlfriend to go i could easily wait and save money by buying the bluray version in 4 months

@Taskmaster666, I don't think anything the movie is doing is responsible for it not making as much as it should, or as much as you think it should. If you look at the international markets, it's been doing stellar.

The reason it made about $66M domestic is because Fast Five is there, taking a $32M bite out of the box office.

If you notice, Thor didn't have any competition in most of those other markets. If Fast Five wasn't in it's second week, Thor almost certainly would have made at least $20M more.

There's only so much money that can be made each week.I think it's currently around $125-145M, so Fast Five really put a dent in it's gross.

Anyway, $66M domestic is damn good.I was expecting $70M, so that's close enough.I would guess Marvel is satisfied, as well. It's looking to outpace a lot of other recent Marvel movies.

Hell, it's only about $21M away from beating Incredible Hulk's entire gross. And it's only been open 3 weeks.

@ Cashsteele & LMFAO:

My wife can't see 3D movies because she's epileptic (she begins to have a headache after 5-10 minutes) and Thor was only in 3D in our country, so we haven't seen it even if we wanted to watch it badly!

#THOR opening with 66 mill proves two things 1) Paramount was wise to release overseas first. 2) 3D doesnt guarantee $$

also Theaters shouldnt have 10 showings for 3D but only 4 showings for 2D, it turns off the customer and refuse to see the film.

but overall i would be happy if i were MARVEL, overall it's 200mill + and will probably be #1 next week with no real competition till Pirates so...it's a success

Meh, I hope that positive word of mouth will give Thor solid legs through the summer.

No bull..."Thor" is an excellent superhero movie on par with Iron Man 1, X-Men 1 & 2, and TDK (Thought it was better than Spidey 1 & 2). Anyone who is a fan of this genre is missing out on a rollicking good time if they don't see it in theatres (especially in 3D).

This film was god awful.

Let's hope that Captain America does not go the same way.

Avengers will suck.
