Taika Waititi Promises A “Fresher Style of Humor” And ‘THOR’ “Most Interesting” In RAGNAROK

While promoting his new critically-acclaimed film, Hunt For The Wilderpeople, at the Sundance Film Festival over the weekend, Taika Waititi has also been pressed for details about his next big project, Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok. During separate interviews with Crave Online and CNet, the filmmaker explained what he will bring to the God of Thunder’s third solo adventure, and how humor will come into play this time around. Waititi also offered a surprising update on the threequel’s development.

“My strength in this is bringing my style of humor,” said the director, “which is probably a very different style of humor. They've had good jokes in them before, but I think where I come from is maybe a fresher style. It could just shake the entire thing up a bit.” About joining the Marvel machine after helming independent movies, Taika Waititi says, “I’m like the new kid in class! They’re really cool people. I’ve already made some great friends, and everyone wants to make the best story possible. [The development process is] very collaborative, more collaborative than I think people probably expect. It’s not just one person ordering everyone around. It’s people discussing and saying, ‘What if it was like this’ or ‘I don't think it should be like that’, which is very healthy. And it’s actually what I’m used to, coming from theatre and co-ops and collaborating.” When asked if he could give hints about the plot, Waitii said, “No, because I don’t even know. We're still figuring out what characters are in it and how they all interact. We’re very early on in prep, storylining, figuring it all out”

During his chat with Crave Online, Waititi was first asked how much freedom he has on Thor: Ragnarok. “I guess we’ll see once we get on set,” he replied. “I think on set it’s a different story. It’s basically about coming in under budget. [Laughs.] That’s all it’s about. If you come in under budget and on time you can do what you want, really. Just stick to what the idea of the story is. I always do that. And I’ve talked a lot about my style and the way I work on set, which is very improvisational. I make up a lot of shots on the spot sometimes but I always have a plan. I always plan what I’m going to do and then I’ll throw that plan away when I see what the actors want to do, and then we have to come to a common ground and figure that out.” When asked if there’s a danger of making changes on the spot, especially with CGI and a big budget, Waititi said, “There will definitely be that danger, yeah, but as much as possible I like to shoot practically and on locations.” He added, “This will be very different for me but luckily I’ve done a lot of commercials before, some big ones, so I’m used to changing pace on bigger sets. There’s a lot of waiting around, and nobody likes to wait around while they’re setting up green screens and weird CG stuff. But yeah, these movies are so big that they have to.”

Taika Waititi then confirmed that Marvel Studios had approached him and asked him to pitch them his take on Thor: Ragnarok“They watched Shadows obviously, and they watched Boy,” he explained. “And I think the combination of those two films, you get that I wasn’t just like a crazy comedy director or too dramatic. They wanted to weave a little bit away from that. […] Basically how I pitched it was like, [Thor] just needs to be the most interesting character. If you’re going to call the movie Thor, Thor has to be the best character.” That's something that was missing arguably in both Thor and Thor: The Dark World movies. However, making the God of Thunder the most interesting character might be a challenge for Ragnarok with the Incredible Hulk on board. What do you think?
Starring Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Jaimie Alexander, Ray Stevenson, Anthony Hopkins, and Mark Ruffalo, Thor: Ragnarok is currently being scripted by Christopher Yost and Craig Kyle with Taika Waititi set to direct, and the movie scheduled to release in theaters on November 3, 2017.

Sounds great. I like keeping the humor in there just need to make the action a lot better and dynamic and original than it was The Dark World. But making Thor the most interesting character in the movie seems obvious but yes by all means do that. It's not always the case with main protagonists.

So they picked a director specifically because of his approach to humor?? Yeah, good luck with that.

As long as theres no naked Selvig, or Kat Dennings to be the constant comic relief, we're good.

Sounds like we might be in for something special here. We have an apparently talented director bringing in his own unique vision and sense of humor, he's seems to be getting along with Marvel quite well, and they're all putting in extra effort to deliver really good product.

I think we may have the "Guardians of the Galaxy" of Phase 3, ladies and gentlemen...

@MrMartyMarvel - unlike that Ant-Man disaster with Wright. Shit took forever and fell apart and they had to pick up the pieces. Still was a great movie. I loved Ant-Man but Marvel stuff always works better when it's a happy collab and not one person trying to force their way.

It's a bit worrying that everything we've heard has been "buddy film", "laughs", "Guardians-like fun", "humor", and absolutely nothing about the supposed title of the film itself: "Ragnarok". They're still deciding the basics of the story? I wonder if this will even be Ragnarok by the time its finished. It's troubling because it seems that their primary consideration was the humor.

Chris Hemsworth has said he wanted the Thor films to be more like GOTG. He's been a big advocate towards changing up the humor of the franchise. I wonder if this has anything to do with Marvel looking at directors like Waititi.

I'm very interested in what Waititi brings to the franchise. I haven't seen any of his work but his current movie at Sundance is getting a lot of positive reviews. I just hope that the humor is more situational or through the characterization than just jokes. But this is Marvel and the one thing they value is their characterization so I shouldn't be worried. Looking forward to hearing more from this film.

What the heck. I don't want a funny/humor Thor Ragnarok. It's okay to have 1 or 2 light hearted moments but other than that I want full blown armageddon?

And already one dislike...

Yeaaahhhh, I have no idea why Nate trusted us with a dislike button, people will go around liking/disliking comments for absolutely no reason. It's a feature that's gonna have no weight, and will probably get out of hand very quickly.

Seems that I can't like/dislike anymore. Please Nate, I want this like/dislike feature to stay, but fix it.

About the movie. I want something that takes some cues and tips from.Man of Steel as it is supposed to be darker. Do Thor Justice. He was great in Age of Ultron and that's not a good thing as he's very bland in his own movies.

Some guys here are so limited, damm. Everything Taika did until now was great, everything he did get critical and aundience acclaim. He is a very much talented guy and Marvel has a very good structure to support him to do the best job possible. Watch all his movies and yoy'll see it.

As Kevin Feige said before, "The humor is in the DNA of the (Marvel) movies, there are no plans to change that", so please stop the complain about it. Hear things like "Captain America: Civil War can't has humor", "Thor:Ragnarok can't has humor" and "this will be another Marvel humorous movie" is just boring. If you don't like humor, you're not their audience, simple like that. Marvel get critical success and earned many billions in this way, they will not change. Besides that, all my favorite Marvel Comics has humor, has great characters, has adventure, has action and has heart. That's what I want in any Marvel story and that is the real Marvel essence, since Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.

Thor is one of hardest characters of all to adapt to screen. He isn't Batman or Iron Man, easy concepts. The Norse God/Superhero Mithology, living in Asgard and in Earth, with humans and gods relationships, cosmic and earthbound adventures Concept. It's a very, very hard concept to work. Because that Thor comics were always so fickle. Few writers managed to make a good balance.

People argue as everything that this movie needs is two full hours of war. Even in the (best) Lord of the Rings movies, the action is at some points and they still have humor in many times (Hobbits relationships and gags, Legolas / Gimli contests). And I don't no if you've noticed, but the Lord of the Rings has a structure similar to a Big Road Movie.

Thor Ragnarok can have humor, mithology, sci-fi, adventure and even yet almost thirty minutes of a epic war in the climax. There's time to all of it. You don't know how or when the Ragnarok will (if) happen (otherwise, they can stop it). Taika is the best director this movie may have. So stop crying.
