MAD MAX Director George Miller On If He'd Consider Directing Chris Hemsworth In THOR 5

MAD MAX Director George Miller On If He'd Consider Directing Chris Hemsworth In THOR 5

It's probably safe to say that Taika Waititi won't be back to helm another Thor movie for Marvel Studios after Love and Thunder, so would George Miller be game to move the franchise forward?

While Thor: Love and Thunder was critically maligned, it was still a box office success for Marvel Studios, earning $761M worldwide from a production budget of $250M.

After helming two Thor films in a row, director Taika Waititi has indicated that he's likely done with the franchise, opening the door for another director to step in, if Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige want to make another standalone Thor film.

As such, George Miller (Fury Road, Babe, Happy Feet) was recently asked whether he would consider reuniting with Chris Hemsworth on Thor 5, after directing the Australian actor in the upcoming Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

Somewhat surprisingly, Miller stated that he'd consider it.

"I would work with Chris on anything. I really would. He's a wonderful actor. He's got the full range of all the skills," said Miller. "I mean, you've got to be athletic, physically."

"But, you also gotta be athletic emotionally and intellectually to take on these very, ultimately fairly complex, any role really. So, I was very lucky with all my cast and particularly in the way that Anya and Chris matched each other. Particularly towards the end of the month."

Unless there are some surprises in Deadpool & Wolverine, Thor's next appearance is most likely in Avengers 5 and/or Avengers: Secret Wars. As Marvel Studios closes out The Multiverse Saga in the next few years, kicking off the next phase of film's with a solo Thor film would be a somewhat, safe option.

More recently, Hemsworth lamented how Love and Thunder turned out in a Vanity Fair piece, placing the blame solely on his shoulders.

"I got caught up in the improv and the wackiness, and I became a parody of myself," said Hemsworth. "I didn’t stick the landing."

Last August, @MyTimeToShine reported that Thor 5 was in development at Marvel Studios but Variety quickly debunked that rumor as nonsense.  Furthermore, who knows how much longer these anonymous Twitter accounts will be around after it seems Marvel is finally taking action.

In a past interview, Hemsworth stated that he only wants to return for another Thor film if there's demade from MCU fans.

"I don’t want to continue to do it until people are so exhausted that they roll their eyes when they see me come on the screen as that character. If an audience wants to see it, and if there’s something that we believe is exciting and fun, then great."

"I’ve loved being able to reinvent that character a few times. I don’t have the answer yet, but I would love to try and [figure out] how we can do that again and keep it a little unpredictable."

Do you think Marvel Studios should greenlight a fifth Thor film once The Multiverse Saga wraps? And do you think George Miller would be a good fit to direct the pic? Let us know in the comment section below.

@harryba11zack - Agreed. I actually thought the first one did a pretty amazing job of bringing Asgard and Thor to life, But should have leaned in the direction you suggested after that

@harryba11zack - I wonder if they could ever do that in light of what they’ve done with the character. Like what they did in Ragnarok but in reverse.

Serious -> silly -> SUPER silly -> Serious

I think the MCU could find a good project for Miller.

I need to think more on this.

Say whatever you want but Hemsworth is already a marvel legend, 10+years as the character always putting up with whatever lines they give him and also looking like a [frick]ing beast every time? God bless him

@Ha1frican - I think there’s potential with a Thor 5 with Thor being a dad now and Hercules after him…

You could really delve into the theme of fatherhood and deal with Thor’s own relationship with Odin and Herc’s with Zeus…

Also how he wants to be better for Love then Odin was to him etc.

Now that's a great choice for Thor. Even though I thought Kenneth Branaugh was pretty awesome as well. Except for all of the unnecessary dutch angles

That certainly would be interesting and I would want to check it out but I doubt it ever happens honestly…

Miller is someone who is an auteur and Marvel seems to be a place where you they will give you freedom to an extent and emphasize a collaborative vision which isn’t every director’s bag.

I think someone like a Gareth Edwards could make a fun Thor film!!.

@TheVisionary25 - Miller is an auteur? Then we need more people like him then, very down-to-earth as the interview showed him and he didn't reject the idea entirely, instead being open-minded. More directors like that please, instead of high-brow egocentric ones.

Garth Edwards would also be cool to have, even if not for Thor 5. I've never been bored nor disappointed by his movies.

@TheVisionary25 - There should be exceptions of whom they can give full creative control and he's a one-in-a-lifetime pick that they should seize if the chance ever presents itself.

I'm glad I skipped L&T because it looks like it's everything I've heard about it and then some. I'd be down for a new Thor movie, just make it more like the Northman and less like a parody.

Okay so, “director Taika Waititi has indicated that he's likely done with the franchise.” I would have to say that the franchise is done with him as well and I enjoyed Ragnarock. Some of L and T worked for me, particularly the actual dramatic moments, but the humor was dialed up to Spinal Tap levels and should have been dialed back some.

TheVisionary25 - 5/11/2024, 5:38 PM
@RolandD . The humor was a bit too much and more hit and miss then Love & Thunder but I did like the dramatic moments and even Thor’s arc of finding new meaning & purpose

I also liked Gorr.

He needs one more for the road. Have the Maestro kill the Kid.

Bring in Beta Ray Bill to redeem Thor before he becomes something worse than Thanos.

Allow Kid to come from another timeline to sacrifice herself to save Thor.

I understand most people loathe the Thor movies but I like them. A couple have been hit and miss but they are still enjoyable and serviceable pieces of work. Not necessarily the best of what the MCU has to offer but definitely not the worst. In fact Thor as a franchise is far more invaluable then we realise. If it wasn’t for Thor, we wouldn’t have Loki. So some good has come out of the solo franchise as of late. Loved the first Thor and I adore Ragnarok. Easily in my top 3 of favourite MCU movies. Ragnarok slaps. Hemsworth has been dedicated since the beginning it’s just a shame he hasn’t always had the best material. His arc within infinity war and endgame was really well done imo. Everyone ridiculed “fat thor” but they fail to realise it was the character suffering some form of PTSD hence the weight gain and it wasn’t played for laughs necessarily. People always have a cynical way of seeing things. A fifth Thor could work under the right direction sure. I don’t think miller would commit to such a project unless he has full autonomy over it like he does with mad max. I’m looking forward to seeing what they do next with the character.
