THOR Director Kenneth Branagh Comments On The Heroes Journey, Taika Waititi And RAGNAROK

During the promotion of Murder on the Orient Express director Kenneth Branagh had a chance to express his feelings about Thor’s journey and explained why Marvel’s Kevin Feige called him. SPOILERS AHEAD!

The Thor trilogy is an interesting beast. Before Taika Waititi “ruined” the franchise to achieve new heights, both Thor and The Dark World were kept in vein of what one could call as a Shakespearian movie. Kenneth Branagh set the tone in 2011 and achieved wonders, as the first Thor used to be the highest-grossing superhero non-Batman/Iron Man/Wolverine/Spider-Man movie ever.

In an interview during the promotion of Murder on the Orient Express (which is getting a sequel, by the way), Branagh was asked if he had a chance to watch Ragnarok. Here’s the director’s insightful answer:

No, but I look forward to it very much. Really look forward to the fact that it’s clearly so different in tone, although Kevin Feige was in touch recently very sweetly, to say they use a bit of Patrick Doyle’s theme from the first movie and it’s quite a touching moment at the end of a great fun space adventure that sort of let’s you know the roots from which it came. They all sort of join up. I’m very pleased it seems so releasing for Chris that the character’s been re-energized. Taika’s a terrific director, and a sense of fun and adventure with the character is also very pleasing to see. I’m proud to have been a small part of that universe and to have dealt with that subject tonally at a time when we were all pretty sweaty about whether we could make it work on its own, let alone as part of the great edifice that is now the MCU!

The bits of Doyle’s theme in the very ending of Ragnarok surely reminded me about the beauty of Asgard and Odinson’s long, uneven journey. Kevin Feige proves once again that he’s a classy guy and it’s good to see Kenneth Branagh’s work appreciated. You can read the interview in full HERE.

Still haven't seen it. New baby in the house means no cinema for me.

Very nicely said by him, and looks like they have a great relationship. Enjoyed his take on Thor a lot actually, big fan of him as a director and actor.

@Menks123 - Agreed. The only problem I had with Thor was the relatively unsatisfying final fight. He took down the Destroyer armour rather quickly.

@Stealthduck @Menks123 - I also like the 1st Thor a lot. The only thing that could be better IMO is a montage on his time on Earth could benefit both the idea he took time to humble and to connect to Jane. His redemption seemed a bit rushed, unfortunately.

@Fogs - Yes, I agree with you on that one. The journey from spoiled arrogance to humble breakfast maker was fast! But still, that doesn't bother me as much as the final fight.
Says a lot about me, really! 'Screw the humanising, let them fight!'

I prefer the more serious tone of Kenneth Branagh. I found Thor's change in tone jarring!

@Forthas - really? I thought throughout the mcu he was changing, in avengers he was a bit comedic, Thor 2 was having fun, AOU he was more lighthearted and to thor 3

@MrPositive - he was super light hearted and could get away with anything in the first thor movie until odin taught him humility. Is it a surprise thor would return to his old character after he found out odin had lied to him in ragnarok?
MrPositive
MrPositive - 11/23/2017, 4:15 PM
@JonC - no, he had a moment where he prayed Odin to go to Vahalla and then a moment of anger at Loki for what happened

Showed Thor being OP which gladly returned in Thor Ragnarok

Kennet Branagh, your majesty. You did a very good and underrated movie. Great portrayal of Asgard (i really love how the sky turns into the space by the Bifrost location and the waterfall). The only bad thing were the costumes, too much power-rangerish. Great Soundtrack though.
And the most bad ass Thor to date (i still can't decide if this or Taika's was more powerful).

@LoganMjolnir - I believe Kenneth's Thor was tougher. The Avengers or the valkyrie wouldn't be able to beat his Loki. His Loki was the best villain in the MCU in my opinion

I like thor and murder on the orient express. Patrick Doyle is a great composer and his score was amazing in murder on the orient. I would like to see Ken at the front of the camera in a cbm. I think he would make a good braniac.

Doyle's Thor/Asgard theme is absolute perfection. The whole score for the Thor movie is fantastic, and so is the one for Ragnarok. Thor was a really good movie and it used to be my second favourite MCU movie (that was Iron Man) before Avengers and other subsequent movies came out. Branagh did a really good job with the Thor movie, and I got to say that even though the CGI wasn't perfect, I loved the look of his Asgard. Like how it was always night. Gave it a real cosmic vibe.

Branagh made a success out of a faithful adaptation of a property that most of Hollywood thought could never work on screen. Hell, look at how Marvel Comics themselves bastardized the premise to ground him in his introduction in “The Ultimates” because they didn’t think that Asgard or the Rainbow Bridge or any of it could work for audiences. Branagh sold it. “Ragnarok” would have been impossible without that first film establishing and embracing the mythic side of the character, so all the more kudos to the team on the original film.
