THOR: RAGNAROK Star Jeff Goldblum Nearly Played This Character In CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER
Jeff Goldblum reportedly steals the show in Thor: Ragnarok but Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has now revealed which role the actor was offered (and refused) in Captain America: The First Avenger.
Marvel Studios has been attracting A-List talent since day one and it's rare that anyone turns them down. Well, Jeff Goldblum did after being offered a bit part in Captain America: The First Avenger and Kevin Feige has now revealed that it all worked out for the best so they could cast him as The Grandmaster in Thor: Ragnarok, a role those who have seen the movie have been praising him for.
So, who was he originally eyed for? Senator Brandt, the man who recruited Steve Rogers for the USO.
"And we had come close. I mean, I’ll tell you, I think we spoke to him or offered him a role in Captain America: The First Avenger. I think the role of the senator that was part of that USO tour in the first Captain America film. And he either wasn’t available or wasn’t interested or whatever. And thank goodness, because that would have just been a small thing and instead we got to wait for the Grandmaster, which is about as amazing as a Jeff Goldblum ‘Goldblum-iness’ could be."
Michael Brandon ended up playing Senator Brandt and it's fair to say that it was far more appropriate bit of casting and that Marvel made the right choice holding off on casing Goldblum in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As of right now, we have no idea if the plan is for him to return (he made his first appearance in the credits of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 for some reason) but you'd hope so.
