Thor Will Be An Alien?

Information about the upcoming Thor movie has come from an unlikely spot, but suggest that Thor from the movie won't be a god at all...but an alien?

One of the reasons people thought we'd never get a movie based on the Thor comic books was that it's too hard a pill to swallow. For whatever reason, the feeling was that while audiences can handle radioactive spiders, gamma ray bombardments, and genetic mutations that give people laser-eyes, the idea of putting a Norse god in the context of the real world was just too much. After viewing two trailers released for the Thor film which dealt heavily with Thor's Norse-deity origin, the comic-book film community assumed the concern had been dispensed with...Whoops.

The story comes from an unlikely place: the March edition of the videogame magazine, Game Informer. While the story in the magazine is focused on the upcoming videogame based on the Thor film, it goes into some information about the movie that had yet to be revealed. Looks like Thor's not going to be the honest-to-goodness Norse god of lightning like he is in the comic books; he and all the other Asgardians are going to be outer-space aliens ...

"In the movie and the game universe, Thor and the rest of the Asgardians aren't actual gods, but rather an advanced alien race whose fantastic technology makes them appear godlike. While this liberal interpretation may rub some comic fans the wrong way, [the developer of the game] is staying true to the property in many other ways."

Lines from the trailers have hinted at the magic of the Asgardians being comparable to the technology that drives the modern world, but it looks like that's only the tip of the iceberg. Director Kenneth Branagh and his group of writers are going full on Chariots of the Gods with the story

Dude, this has been known for a LONG time. The trailers have made it obvious that he was going to be an alien. Even in the comics it is suggested that he is an immensely powerful alien rather than a real god. (although it's a bit more ambiguous as different writers have shared their views on who he really is.)

I could be wrong, but wasn't this the story in the comic books. It's not that they are Alien copies of the Norse Gods but rather that the Norse Gods always were aliens mistaken as gods.

What else would it be? Did you really think that Marvel was saying that the Norse Gods are real? What would that say about Christanity? Not that it would matter to me, but I cannot see a comic company in the 60's-70's endorsing a pagan religion anymore than a movie company now.

People are digging pretty deep for a reason to complain about this movie.

Wait... so Guys decending from clouds (who aren't from here) and performing "magic" that we can't explain. Aren't Gods technically aliens anyway?!?

I don't really recall this actually being an issue that it is brought up in the Thor film. Everyone already seemed pretty receptive to it... except the people who are just casually into comics.

Yeah, I could have sworn this was either stated a long time ago, or heavily hinted to. If they were Norse gods, their existence, to some (or most) would indirectly state that Marvel is claiming other Gods are false. Religious beliefs aside, no company looking for profit on an international scale would risk that kind of backlash.

@Shocker

Yeah, major advantage to the whole "alien" thing. Just drop in some cosmic references like the Infinity Gauntlet (oh wait, they already did [ftw]) and you just opened the door to everything cosmic.

That would probably explain why one of the God's is colored lol.

We live and are from Midgard, they live on Asgard.
Technically they are 2 different worlds, each part of the 9 worlds. If an Asgardian comes to Midgard he is technically an alien, since he is from a different world.

HOWEVER it has made me think that Marvel are going to tread carefully with the more 'supernatural' and 'magical' side of their universe.

Thats why Dr Strange and Namor could be very interesting - on how they would approach those characters.

Well an inter dimensional being can pretty much be anything , an alien or a god so it doesn't matter what they are called . Since Thor was here hundreds of years ago he was worshipped as a god . You could also call him a cosmic being too .

Dumb article, religion in MCU is a bad idea.

Old news is old.

Also, "alien" to most people usually makes them think little green men, which is inaccurate for this context. The Aesir have always been portrayed as beings of a higher plane of existence that have been worshiped as gods in the comics. Thor has repeatedly stated that he is not a 'god' except for the period of the 'reigning', but of course he was a bad guy during that period.

So, the MCU Thor is still the "god of thunder" simply because he was worshiped as such.

Well, in the DC universe, the greek Gods are also just immortal beings with magical powers, as shown in the Wonder Woman comics. Plus the Gods from Apokolips and New Genesis are also just immortals with powers and technology. So it wouldn't bother me if it is true in the Marvel universe also.

Also, the Spectre is the only one who actually works for the one true God.

If Thors an alien, how do you explain this Q&A right here from CBM?

CBM - We all know he's an all-powerful god, but this movie also makes him kind of a screw up. His belligerence gets him banished to Earth, which disgusts him. He has to prove himself worthy again to his father [Odin, played by Anthony Hopkins]-but is that what he's doing with the audience, too?

Branagh - Even in the case of a god, audiences - paradoxically - enjoy recognising the human traits. In Thor's case, we are thrilled by his powers, but I think we relate to his emotions. There are some flaws, some foibles, sibling rivalries at work and romantic entanglements. The way in to making a god attractive is to find out where his experience connects to a human one.

That doesn't sound like an alien to me!

i thought marvel was like DC, with all kind of gods existing but God being the main and far strongest of all gods

Ii depends on what you call a God. Does it mean:

(a) simply being worshipped
(b) being an embodiment of a concept
(c) having a role in creation

In Norse Mythology all three apply to the Norse gods.

In the Marvel Universe only the first two apply. The Norse gods did not create mankind or the universe. They were powerful otherdimensional beings who were worshipped and who came to embody certain concepts (e.g., Thor = weather/storm/thunder).

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe it is similar. They are powerful extraterrestrial beings who were worshipped, etc., etc.

PEOPLE. GAME INFORMER DIDN'T EXPLAIN IT ALL.

THE DIRECTOR STATED THAT THE ASGARDIANS WERE ON EARTH HUNDRENDS OF YEARS AGO, VIKINGS SAW THEM, AND THOUGHT OF THEM TO BE GODS AND WORE CLOTHES LIKE THEM. SO WHAT WE THINK ARE GODS, ARE REALLY JUST ALIENS.

I personally like it, not better then the comics, but it's good.

Thor in the comics is not a god. He is an interdimensional being that was once worshipped on Earth as a god due to his and the other Asgardians advanced tech. This will be clearly explained in the film.

And that is true of Kirby/Lee's run on Thor, the true origin. I love JMS's Thor run but he made him very Viking like with castles and sh!t. The original Kirby stuff had a very "cosmic" feel to it. Look it up, ya punk [female dog]es!

yeah that way there isn't any angry religous people or protest, yes protest, they did it before, they'd do it again...DC [frick]ed up the egyptian gods -.-

and just so you know, osiris is the god of the underworld and agriculture, not death, that's anubis.
anubis is the god of death and disembowelment...just saying

@kirbyfan It's staying completely true to the comic books if you read them, this is how the Marvel Universe explains the origin of the Asgardians. Stop running your immature mouth off before you think!

TO EVERYBODY MOANING... THIS IS NOTHING NEW OR DIFFERENT TO THE COMICS, GO READ THEM!

If he was truly a God he would be immortal but he isn't. He just has a really long lifespan thanks to the consumption of the Golden Apples of Idunn that sustain his extended lifespan, which to date has lasted many millennia.

GOD OR NOT HE IS JUST PLAIN SUPER F*KIN' BADASS!

THORGodOfThunder - 2/22/2011, 10:41 PM
Ya this def isn't new news, we all already know Thor is an alien. This is one of the main bases for Thor's true origin from the comics. Having him as a real god in the movie wouldn't be right. This movie is going to be amazing, I fully trust THOR in Marvel Studios hands, they have done an amazing job, the trailer and promotions are incredible. THOR will be the best movie overall of 2011!! and the best CBM to date!!!!
