THUNDERBOLTS* Comic-Con Trailer Breakdown - Everything Revealed In The Leaked Teaser (Including The Sentry)

The first Thunderbolts* trailer debuted at last month's San Diego Comic-Con, and it's only just now leaked online. While Marvel Studios has acted fast to take it down, we have a full breakdown for you...

Thunderbolts* may not feature a comic-accurate roster but it's quite easily one of Marvel Studios' most intriguing upcoming movies. Set to hit theaters next summer, the prevailing theory right now is that this team will ultimately be revealed as the Dark Avengers (hence the asterisk).

Marvel Studios didn't take Thunderbolts* to D23 but the first trailer did premiere at last month's San Diego Comic-Con. Now, nearly a month later, it's leaked online and the response from fans has been massively positive.

While the sneak peek is mostly comprised of action scenes, there are some big reveals in there which we're taking a closer look at in this feature. From The Sentry's MCU debut to what brings this team together, we have a lot to sink our teeth into and this movie has all the makings of being an absolute must-watch.

6. A Family Reunion

The Thunderbolts* trailer opens with Yelena Belova tracking down her father, Alexei Shostakov. It doesn't appear he has much going on in his life since we last saw him in Black Widow, though he has finally made a home for himself in America.

"There is something wrong with me," Yelena tells her father. "An emptiness. I'm just drifting and I don't have purpose. I thought throwing myself into work was the answer."

As she says that, we see the former Black Widow making short work of various people she's presumably been sent to kill (meaning Yelena likely remained a contract killer following the events of Hawkeye). Could a team be what fills the void in her life?

5. "Fall Of A Hero"

john-walker-captain-america-bad-choice-copy

During Yelena's voiceover, we also catch up with John Walker at home. He has a child now and, while sitting by her crib, he's reading a news article on his phone titled, "Fall Of A Hero: The John Walker Story."

In The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, John was named the new Captain America but grew increasingly unhinged and eventually took the Super Soldier Serum. However, he also murdered one of the Flag Smashers, leaving him with no other choice but to give up the mantle and shield.

Valentina Allegra de Fontaine later made him her "U.S. Agent" but whether the world at large knows that isn't clear. Bucky, meanwhile, is now a Congressman but appears similarly unfulfilled with where he finds himself.

4. An Unexpected First Meeting

Mtneax0k o

We then find Yelena breaking into a mysterious facility of some sort. As she explores, U.S. Agent appears and attempts to gun her down, with a fight ensuing. The assassin is saved by Taskmaster when Ghost, who looks to be on John's side, also shows up.

This seems to be the first time this team crosses paths and it's confirmed that they were all "sent" there. After Yelena points out how they've all done bad things and someone must want them gone, the facility is suddenly put in lockdown.

A one-minute timer begins counting down and things aren't looking good for them; has an unknown foe set these four up to die or could this have something to do with the mysterious new character they encounter?

3. Bob

Zqmbadum o

Before that lockdown begins, Yelena, U.S. Agent, Taskmaster, and Ghost meet Lewis Pullman's Bob. He wasn't sent there and it seems this is where he was being kept before everyone left.

Of course, we know that "Bob" is Robert Reynolds, a.k.a. The Sentry. The world's most powerful super soldier has an inner darkness called The Void, leaving us to wonder whether the apparent disappearance of the scientists and agents who once manned this facility is the villain's doing.

Were these four meant to save Bob, kill him, or simply retrieve him? We don't know, but we do see his iconic Sentry logo on a belt clasp a little later in the trailer, confirming he'll suit up. Bob is also confronted by a plethora of armed guards, though their hundreds of bullets have no effect.

2. Val Returns

Bpdznoth o

Bucky attends a fancy shindig where one of the items on display is Loki's sceptre from The Avengers. He's keeping a close eye on Val, the C.I.A. Director who has made a move on Wakanda's Vibranium reserves and sent Yelena Belova to kill Hawkeye.

It's at this point her voiceover takes over: "We're brought up with this belief that there are good guys and there are bad guys. But eventually, you come to realise that there are bad guys...and there are worse guys."

The entire Thunderbolts team, including Bucky and Red Guardian, confront Val in a building which may or may not be Avengers Tower. Is this where she reveals that she was responsible for bringing them together as a team? Her own team of, say, Dark Avengers?!

Yelena doesn't seem thrilled to be reunited with her, anyway, but the trailer gives the impression that Val will be an Amanda Waller-style figure manipulating these wannabe heroes from the shadows.

1. New Costumes

Ut9difc0 o

Well, the Thunderbolts don't look like what you see above! Each of the characters has a new costume in the movie, with Ghost and Taskmaster undergoing the biggest overhauls. The latter is no longer hiding her femininity and now has a white skull-like mask.

Ghost, meanwhile, has a fully black suit with a smooth white helmet that isn't much like anything we've seen in the comics. Yelena isn't too different from previous appearances while U.S. Agents' suit has undergone only a few minor changes.

Bucky isn't wearing anything too exciting - he does, however, put his arm in the dishwasher at one stage - and Red Guardian's suit was shown off at Comic-Con. Is this the best costume design we've seen in the MCU? No, but the aesthetic from character to character is pretty consistent. We just hope The Sentry doesn't head down this black ops route.

Bucky has killed many people in cold blood. Would still be better than 99.9% of current people in Congress.

@Izaizaiza - Someone with Steve Rodgers' character would be a great representative. Unfortunately, in the real world, most of the good people either cannot achieve success or get burned out by the process. And we get left with what we get.

Really reminds me of this great classic George Carlin joke:

@Izaizaiza - Appreciate that. I find that I can do the same with politicians that I disagree with but I see them doing good things or standing up to convictions.

I don’t agree with AOC often, but she is also on the right side of this issue. My tax dollars shouldn’t be constantly funneled to foreign wars. In any country. And very few on either side of the aisle stand up to that.

@mountainman - Yeah man, as much an intellectual social commentator as a comedian. I don't quite agree with him on this that all is hopeless and voting is useless, but outside of those conclusions, I think he's spot on
mountainman
mountainman - 8/14/2024, 3:01 PM
@Izaizaiza - I have some anarchist or just not politically involved friends. Totally understand that perspective. It’s really tough to affect change.

I am involved myself (by a lot more than just voting) and I can tell you it beats you down sometimes.

One thing I always loved about Carlin is he didn’t play sides and was able to call out anyone for their BS.
Izaizaiza
Izaizaiza - 8/14/2024, 4:05 PM
@mountainman - Yeah, agreed about Carlin. How trying to affect political change can beat you down. I'm in my '50s now so I definitely get the sentiment. I work with a lot of young people, many more progressive than me, and I'm pretty progressive. Sometimes they'll complain about the presidential candidate, for example. I'll ask them who they voted for in the primary, and they'll say that they didn't vote in the primary... Which isn't surprising, as I think the number here was about 30% of voters voted in the primary. It seems a little defeatist to say that voting doesn't change anything, when The argument could be made that we haven't tried it yet
mountainman
mountainman - 8/14/2024, 5:27 PM
@Izaizaiza - In my state, about 3-4 million people vote for president. That means my vote counts as 1/3,500,000. Unless I have the ability to influence a lot of other people to vote my way, whatever I do won’t change the outcome.

But in the city I live in of 60,000, the last mayor won with 1700 votes. I can have A LOT more influence in that. Or attending city council meetings, school board meetings, county commission meetings, talking to local representatives, gathering signatures to get ballot initiatives to go to vote, etc.

Personally I’m very invested in local politics. Then state. And least of all national.

Every president in my lifetime has been terrible and I don’t anticipate that streak to end this year.

I am a much bigger fan of being the change you want to be in the world vs expecting daddy government to save you (because they definitely won’t). If more people didn’t wait for someone else to fix problems and actually put in the work, our world would be a much better place.
Izaizaiza
Izaizaiza - 8/14/2024, 6:06 PM
@mountainman - I agree 100% about the importance of local engagement. President obviously has enormous influence of what happens in the country, especially by what judges they appoint. Just got to make your vote and hope others choose to participate as well
mountainman
mountainman - 8/14/2024, 6:15 PM
@Izaizaiza - Another solution would just be to reduce the size and power of the federal government. It’s pretty obvious the largest government in human history hasn’t been representing its people well for a while now. Thinking some specific person or party is going to fix it seems quite insane to me.
Izaizaiza
Izaizaiza - 8/14/2024, 7:09 PM
@mountainman - Agreed. I vote for the Democrats generally, although I consider myself to be pretty noticeably to the left of them. I read a great description: The Democrats (at the national level) are the mob that you pay protection money to, so that the other mob doesn't burn your store to the ground. Neither one are good guys
mountainman
mountainman - 8/14/2024, 7:15 PM
@Izaizaiza - And I know some people that do the exact same thing for the R’s. I choose to vote for neither nationally (unless I actually had a good President, Senator or Representative to vote for which I don’t). We each get that choice.
Izaizaiza
Izaizaiza - 8/14/2024, 8:15 PM

Honestly , I like the idea where they are going with this…

A team of current or former soldiers & assassins , some of whom have been hired by someone who wants them gone ultimately end up forming a team that might give atleast some of them (Yelena and perhaps Bucky , John and Alexei) a renewed sense of purpose or redemption.

Anyway , seems good and I’m looking forward to it!!.

As a concept it is very interesting with a lot of potential with Yelena and Bucky alone being good enough characters to carry it. If it turns out to be great, good but flawed or meh remains to be seen.

From everything I have read and seen still very intrigued and hopefull for at minimum a good 7/10 sort of film that is worth checking out with the possibility of being a great 9/10 cross between the first Avengers film and Winter Soldier.

I get the red flags some are seeing, Taskmaster is more than a little an unknown factor with folk having issues with both Ghost and Red Guardian in their prior films too so sure, it could turn out bad but then that could be said of almost anything and find dwelling too much on potential negatives in advance is a tad silly till we have seen more.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 8/14/2024, 11:52 AM
@Apophis71 - Taskmaster is very much a blank slate considering she was a blank slate but I thought Ghost was alright and I liked Red Guardian in their prior appearances.

You are right that dwelling on potential negatives is useless right now since it all depends on context

I wonder if the rumors of us seeing Harrison Ford’s President Ross , Laurence Fishburne’s Bill Foster and Rachel Weisz’s Melina are true?.

I can see them trying not to reveal all of them since if we find out that Ross is in this then it could potentially ruin his fate in Cap 4 while the other 2 could be a nice surprised saved for the film itself.

@TheVisionary25 - I never really considered this, but I'm liking the idea of them showing up. Especially Ross if he does in fact make it out of Brave New World as the Red Hulk. It would at least give someone for Sentry to go toe to toe with.
