Shane never survived past the sixth issue in The Walking Dead comic book series, but after 18 episodes, the character finally met his maker at the hands of Rick Grimes last night. Moments later, he came back as a "walker" and was finished off with a bullet in the head from Carl. Talking to Entertainment Weekly, actor Jon Berthnal has revealed plenty of new details about the circumstances surrounding his departure from the AMC series as well as what it was like to film those scenes. Be sure to click on the link below to read even more.

On Playing A Zombie In The Last Few Moments Of His Time On The Walking Dead:

You know, man, it was crazy. I didn’t even realize that I was playing a zombie until I was playing it. There was a lot of discussion going back and forth, a lot of arguing going back and forth on what that last scene actually should be — between myself and Andy and the writers. And everybody kind of got their own little say in what that last scene actually was. But then at the very end I realized, now you gotta go play a zombie! I never even thought about that. Then all of a sudden I’ve got these contacts on, I can’t see anything, and I’m a zombie. And I’m like, "I don’t know how to do this! What do you do?" I tried to convince Greg Nicotero to let me be the only zombie with a speaking line, like, "Riiiiiick." But he didn’t go for it.

On Shooting His Emotional Exit:

We shot that scene all night long. And the entire cast came out and spent the entire night out on that field to be there for the last scene, and Jeff DeMunn [who played the recently deceased Dale] actually had been gone. He lives on a farm in upstate New York, and he had flown down and surprised me to be there for my last scene, which just touched me. And like I said, there was a lot of feeling about the last scene. The writers wanted it to be one way, the actors wanted it one way, the producers wanted it to be another way, I think everybody just sort of had their idea of what that scene should be, and it was just Andy and I in the woods walking out together, and Andy and I turned to each other and said, “You know what, man, this is you and me. Let’s do this for you and me.” I can’t imagine a better actor, a better partner, to do this with, and it’s been the honor of my acting career to act alongside Andrew Lincoln. He’s my brother, he’s my best friend that I’ve made in the acting world, and to go out the way I did and go out with who I did — it was, and still is, very emotional.

On Whether He Think Shane Got What He Deserved:

I think so. And I think that no matter what, somebody was going to die that night. And Shane really did set out that night to kill Rick, and through the conversation, by the end of the scene, he just knew one of them needed to die. I do think he did the right thing.

On Whether He Asked To Be Written Out After The Firing Of Frank Darabont:

You know, no. I did not. This was always the plan. This was always the plan that this was going to do down this way. [However] when Frank left, there were some discussions that it was going to go a different way. One of the things I was really, really looking forward to is Frank always said he was going to write and direct our last scene — the last scene Andy and I would play together. And I’ll be honest: It brought all those feelings back up, because at the end of the day, this thing started with Andy, Frank, and I. Frank continues, I know, to live in Andy’s heart, as he does in mine, and I think that he was sort of there in that last scene. The fact that now I get to go work with him again [on TNT’s upcoming L.A. Noir] is something I’m just tremendously excited about.

Last nights episode was awesome!! Shane got his and it was pretty cool. I actually enjoyed the change from the book. Nice to see him zombied out as well! Best of luck to Jon in the future...he's a very talented actor.

Astounding actor! He will be missed on the show. I really enjoyed the view of that alternate universe in TWD where Shane lives on a while longer and seeing what his dynamic brought to the group. Good work Jon, you helped make a memorable character that I loved to hate and at times, I even found myself going along with. I hope the rest of the biz realizes your talent and we see much more of you in the future.

Well, with just one episode left, I now sit and wait to see if I'm right. By the looks of the end of this weeks episode, I am. They are saving the finale for the exile of the farm, we will get that iconic comic scene where Rick stands on a hill overlooking the prison, and I'm still crossing my fingers that T-Dawg will die.

VandalSavage...really? That doesn't make...any sense at all.

I agree Carl sucks balls these past few episodes, hopefully he'll suck less going into the third season. Loved the way they killed Shane though, better handled than in the comic.

Pay no mind to VandalSavage, the last 2 TWD articles he posted in he took the first few posts to simply troll and hate on the series, this comment is no difference and he certainly wouldn't explain his comment.

American culture? This show is about what happens when society is destroyed and people revert back to their animalistic nature. I dont care what nationality you are or where you are in the world, people will kill to stay alive and keep their loved ones alive. If you dont agree then you are insane

Time for andrea to die. give T-Dog more lines and NO michonne!! too many characters as is. no need to kill some off only to bring in more(boring ones). that would be fine with a smaller cast but not one as big as this.

oh and for God sakes...put Daryl"Motherf*cking"Dixon front and center! and where is Merle? he hasn't been around since the first season(not counting Jedi Merle) and he's more popular than everyone on that show (aside from Daryl)

if i miss an episode (which i havent for some reason).. I wouldnt care... Such over-acting!! Loose storyline that gets watered down with over modulated emotion. The episodes drag as much as a Zombies left leg. Shanes demise was great lastnight.. one less over written character showing "As the World Turns" expressions, gunned down by a no-talent kid who cant hold a gun straight!

They should have the baby die during Lori's third trimester and then reanimate in utero. Sounds awfully sick, but it would be crazy to have her lose the baby, go through all that grief and sadness and then show her laying on a cot looking at her swollen belly going over what could have been. As she mourns and rubs her hand over her stomach you see the baby kick hard. Cut to Lori's horrified face and then to black. That would be crazy!

I don't really get why so many are annoyed by the characters. I like pretty much all of them, well, not "like", but find them believable and well acted. It seems like if a character isn't a badass with a gun and actually acts a bit scared or confused about a situation then they are dismissed as "boring". Some people seem to be watching the show purely for zombie action and if that's the case you are gonna be disappointed by a LOT of episodes because that is not what the show is about.

So it was Jeff DeMunn that asked to be written out...actually makes sense now...even though the series has diverged in some ways there was no way they would have killed Dale if they had a choice!!!

As much I wanted Shane to die, I actually found his death to be kind of sad, and in a way I'm going to miss his character. But that whole scene was so well directed imo, so props go to whoever directed that episode. Jon Berthnal is a very talented actor, and I'm looking forward to his work on LA Noire.

Thanks for the spoiler warning Josh. Too bad there is a giant pic of Zombie Shane on the main page;)

Ror,

I dig the drama, I just don't think all the characters allow the drama to flow naturally. It seems that some 'yeah right' situation needs to take place in order for the drama to start. Also, Dale's entire conflict with Shane was based on a guess that he happened to be right about. I like the show, some of the characters are interesting and post apocalyptic survival stories are awesome, I just don't think this show sits on the same pedestal as Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad. For me, its something to watch until those shows come back.

I just watched this last night on DVR and thankfully I didnt check out this site yesterday otherwise I would have been spoiled... so I will tell you this, putting the pic of Shane up was a bad moove this early. Give the DVR people like me at least a week before puttin that stuff up on the main without spoiler warnings.

Thats just rude and disrespectful to your readers.

Sorry everybody but can somebody tell me WHEN Shane turned walker? I saw the quick clips of the walkers' frenzy but are we supposed to think that walkers bit (and ONLY bit) Shane after Rick stabbed him and before Carl (the wussy kid) shot him point blank? There was TIME for Shane to be BIT but not completley CONSUMED by walkers? Anybody? Is it just me? Ecellent episode! Glad Dale is gone, Carl needs to go, bad choice of actors I think....

@joeydafish
Shane never got bit, you don't need to get bit to turn into a walker. Once you die you will return undead. That's what they found out in the last episode.
That's the point the zombies aren't the walking dead, the survivors are.
joeydafish
joeydafish - 3/13/2012, 11:42 AM
@Bucht
Thanks. I can't believe I forgot that. I was soooo caught up in the munching and the concern if somebody got "bit" I forgot that it is a "disease/epidemic". So if Rick put a bullet in Shane's brain or crushed his skull etc. then no zombie. Carl still needs to go. They killed off the wrong kid.
