More From John Hawkes Turning Down The Governor In THE WALKING DEAD

Actor John Hawkes goes into more detail about why he didn't think playing the role of The Governor, or The Walking Dead itself, was a good fit for him.

Movie Web caught up with actor John Hawkes (The Perfect Storm), and they asked him about his decision to pass on playing the coveted role of The Governor in the popular television series, The Walking Dead. A role that was later filled by the very talented thespian, David Morrissey.

"They offered me the role, and I just felt there would be someone else who could do it better. I was flattered, and I took a look at the series. It held interest for me, but I just didn't feel like I was the guy for it. I have to be careful of what TV shows I choose, particularly ones that have commercials in them, because it's going to be a different kind of television show. There are going to be sponsors. No matter how good the show is, if there are commercials, it's going to be a different show, to me. That's just my personal feeling. Yeah, it was nice of them to ask, and it's a good show, but, again, I just didn't feel I was the guy. They came to me and sent me the graphic novel and the first two seasons. I took a look at them, and just didn't feel like it was for me."

In my opinion John Hawkes is gonna regret his decision. I just don't see how you pass on that role. Simply put, when the number one show on cable television offers you a role as juicy and delicious as The Governor you have to jump on that like a fat kid on cake.

The Walking Dead returns for a third season in the fall and will air Sunday nights at 9/8c on AMC. The show stars: Andrew Lincoln, Jon Bernthal, Laurie Holden, Jeffrey DeMunn, Sarah Wayne Callies, Steven Yeun, Chandler Riggs, Norman Reedus, and Melissa Suzanne McBride.

I would have loved for him to play the part, but John Hawkes isn't regretting anything. The man is an Oscar nominated actor with a slew of big roles ahead of him. If he feels he can afford to pass on something that he doesn't think he's right for, more power to him.

I have to agree with RorMachine. As much as I would have loved for him to play the Governor, he made the choice he felt was right. I think David Morrissey will do an excellent job.

So what he's saying is: They didn't offer me enough money. Ass.

Well I can say it of Hawkes because it's already happening. After Winter's Bone he won more plaudits for his role in Martha Macy May Marlene, and next he;l play Louis Gara in the Jackie Brown prequel. Plus before his nomination he was already a very well respected and in demand actor, maybe not main roles but he was always working.

@mynnDAWG and Eastbound & Down is an awesome show. Plus it has short seasons and his role is small anyway.

I agree with Ror that John is better off with film, since he's catching the attention of many due to his awesome roles.

I would have liked to see him in it but you can't fault the guy. he's a good actor and just didn't feel right. And as far as it "having commercials". I think that meant that he's not use to having deal with a change in a format he's use to (HBO) and you have to answer to sponsors when on Network Television. Then again, he played "Lennon" in that horrible monstrosity of the final season of Lost. Maybe he was privy to some stuff that made the character not interesting to him.

I loved Winter's Bone. He would have been very good.

Although I DID think the comment "It would have commercials in it..." shouldn't be a factor, esp if he has seen anything being produced with good intensity, from 24 to the Walking Dead. That came off kind of snooty.

This series had great actors, doing great scenes, on a great show. Having commercials hasn't slowed them up one bit.

I mean.. look at even mainstream network TV.. William Peterson was in Manhunter!! the original Hannibal Lector movie.. and Lawrence Fishburne in Apocalypse freakin Now!!! .. and both were on CSI. so cut that crap!

FACT: John Hawkes doesn't have DVR service that removes commercials. Also, he's kind of a douchebag.

he's saying that when you're on a show that has commercials, the producers and such have to tailor their programming or content sometimes to please the sponsors, or risk losing them and your funding. as opposed to HBO where they dont have to worry about that kinda thing. im sure he's got a lot more idea of how bad corporate sponsors can derail a good show with threats of cutting funding and all that than we give him credit for
