Robert Kirkman Addresses Massive Fan Backlash Over THE WALKING DEAD Season 6 Finale

Many fans were left unsatisfied with the final scene of The Walking Dead's sixth season. Now, Robert Kirkman has addressed the backlash over the cliffhanger, promising an "awesome payoff".

The introduction of Jeffrey Dean Morgan's 'Negan' was a moment hotly anticpated by many fans of The Walking Dead comic book. The character is well known for taking his baseball bat, "Lucille" to the head of a beloved character. While Negan did do that in the season finale, the death was shown from the victim's point of view, leaving the identity a mystery until season 7 premieres next year. Many fans were outraged over this creative decision, feeling that the series chose to make suspense more important than impact.

Series creator Robert Kirkman has responded to the backlash. "The speculation, the frustration, the possibilities, the theories... honestly, in my mind... that stuff is FUN," Kirkman wrote in an open letter to fans in the latest issue of The Walking Dead comic. "I honestly feel like that's something fun for the fans to do during the break. Last season's finale will lead right into the new season, with a twist that fans "probably won't see coming." Kirkman also apologized that the effort to "get people excited" backfired for some fans. "We weren't trying to drive you crazy, and we certainly weren't trying to FORCE you to come back for season 7," he wrote. "We hope you were always planning on doing that and still plan on doing that."

You can read Kirkman's full statement below. Were you disappointed by the finale, or did you enjoy the cliffhanger? Sound off in the comments!

Bullshit if you ask me. Its already leaked in a few places.

@sKeemAn - Those "leaks" have largely proven to be fans screwing with the audio or editing extra material into the clip.

@Parker00 - Doesn't matter, If any turn out to be correct it still ruins the thrill and te impact of the whoever he killed in the finale.

@sKeemAn - I agree completely!

He actually makes some very valid points. I think if it wasn't for what they did with Glenn earlier in the season a lot of that backlash wouldn't have been so strong.

It's cool, I'm fine with cliffhangers, when done with good intentions & BIG payoffs!

This is just how TV worked in the 90's. Hell, I even remember a finale of King of the Hill ending with Peggy Hill's parachute not working when she was skydiving and her falling from a plane seemingly to her death.

I remember that shit.

Hopefully the Walking Dead doesn't do clip shows.

They did the same thing for that Dallas show with their "Who Shot JR?" cliffhanger. I wasn't alive for that, but I was when the Simpsons made fun of it with Mr. Burns.

im fine with it. its a tv show, not finding out the meaning of life

Eh, Cracked did a decent entry on this pointing out that a true cliffhanger is supposed to be engaging for what happens next, not leave you waiting to find out what just happened.

@Chewtoy
I read the same article. It hints that the writers may be running out of ideas.

Personally, I do love the show a lot..but this was disappointment for me too..and they have done this before with glenn. unsatisfying and felt like a cheap tease. They have done great Television, they can do better, they know how to do better they know what we love, this feel like cutting corners to spread out the showtime wider, like making one season in to two.

@riseofloganX36 - You can't can't even type properly, you're in such a white knight fervor over this silly show. You offer no counter point to anything anyone says, just bleating "troll" and "whineing" (protip: it's WHINING you [frick]ing imbecile) over and over and over. Stop being an insufferable little shit and accept that some people have different opinions than you. As for me, I'm insulting you because you're being a massive asshole. I could care less what this show does these days.

This show sucks. Jeffrey Dean Morgan was the only redeeming quality of the finale. If I wanna go to sleep, I might tune in to the season premiere.

I'm done with this show, but I had already pretty much decided that before the finale.

@dinoSlider - Me too. I stopped watching after Carol and Maggie were captured. I'm not sure why people watch this anymore. Nothing new is happening. Crew meets good people, crew meets bad people. Some survive, some don't, over and over again. If they were trying to find a cure or something as a long-running plot arc, then this might be interesting. But there is no point to tune in each week just to see who lives and dies.

I think they should set up something like they did around season 3 of Lost where they said this show will be done at the end of Season 6. At least then it might build to something other than watching a live-action Team Fortress 2 with zombies.

@TomSolo - Yes, let's inject some "Lost" into it. Because nothing saves a show's quality like a bout of writing yourself into a corner with no discernable plan...

@riseofloganX36 - I see. So if I disagree, then I'm a whiney troll? I'm just saying that I lost interest because to me, the show has been very repetitive. Just my opinion. I didn't say it sucks, it's just not my thing. Maybe ease up on the "troll" name-calling.
TomSolo
TomSolo - 5/5/2016, 4:24 PM
@Parker00 - I get what you're saying. I just meant that maybe they should set an endpoint. That way, at least we would know they are building to something.

Right now, it just deems ike each season has similar situations and plots. Obviously they aren't I identical, but I would like to see some type of resolution.

That's what I would prefer. If you dig the show, that's cool too.
Parker00
Parker00 - 5/5/2016, 4:34 PM
@TomSolo - I can see your logic but the show really isn't about finding a cure, it's about finding a way to survive in this ugly new world. It's success really depends on whether or not you love and root for these characters. I'll also add that these little gimmicks and tricks they've employed this season are getting on my nerves a bit. This cliffhanger was just absolutely unnecessary and ultimately foolish.
