DOCTOR WHO: Neil Patrick Harris Suggests Ncuti Gatwa Will Play The Franchise's First Gay Doctor

Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) will take on a villainous role in Doctor Who when the series returns, and the actor has now dropped a major bombshell about Ncuti Gatwa's Fourteenth Doctor.

The BBC plans to go all out with next year's 60th anniversary celebrations for Doctor Who, including casting The Matrix Resurrections star Neil Patrick Harris in a villainous role.

Based on what we've seen in set photos, it's thought that he's playing the evil Toymaster, with his machinations somehow involving David Tennant's Tenth Doctor. Of course, Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa is set to star as the latest incarnation of the iconic time-traveller, and there's a lot of excitement surrounding what he could bring to the table.

Fans are also hyped that his tenure will be under the watchful eye of Russell T Davis, the writer responsible for bringing Doctor Who back in 2005. His return to the franchise has been celebrated, and as he's hot off the success of It's a Sin, the hope is Russell will bring a greater level of diversity to Doctor Who.

Will that include the first openly gay Doctor?

Talking about his role in the show with Variety (via SFFGazette.com), Harris shared high praise for Gatwa and seemingly confirmed that will be the case. "I got to meet and interact with him a bit and he’s glorious," the actor said. "He’ll be the first gay Doctor, which is going to be super cool, a sexier Doctor."

While Gatwa played a gay character in Sex Education, he's never talked openly about his own sexuality. We can't imagine Harris, who is also gay, has outed his Doctor Who co-star here, so common sense says he's referring to the character. That's a big move on Davis' part, and one that suggest the Doctor will find romance with a male companion in this next series.

Regardless, we can't wait to see this new era of Doctor Who storytelling take shape, and it seems fair to say that Gatwa will put a fresh spin on the Time Lord. He's the first Black actor to play the character, and it sounds like this next iteration is also going to explore his sexuality in a way we haven't seen before.

There's always a chance Harris' comments have been misinterpreted, but it sounds like this franchise is about to take a bold step forward. Stay tuned to SFFGazette.com for the latest Doctor Who updates!

I thought the Doctor was supposed to be asexual?

@RebelCommander - Not since McGann did the movie

@RebelCommander - lol far far FAR FAR FAR from the truth

It depends on the Doctor of course, but the Doctor not only has a grandchild so we can already assume he's had sex - but if you're needing something more abundantly clear:

And that's not counting how many times the 11th Doctor has been straight up horny, even a mention of him calling a female regeneration of another time lord "a bad girl."

It's been alluded to that the Doctor is omnisexual, but they've pretty much focused on the Doctor as a straight male hero who's attracted to primarily women. Even the 13th Doctor seems to have a light romance with Yazmin.

So aside from Jack, which seems like mostly one sided attraction, the Doctor has been portrayed as mostly attracted to women despite being called omnisexual.

Strike that, not since Hartnell became happily engaged with an Aztec woman all the way back in like the 4th story. Though having a granddaughter was always sus on the asexuality claims, unless Longbarrow is canon.

@1stDalek - I'm pretty sure that romance counts as young love lol

I thought that he was saying that Ncuti would be the first gay person playing the Doctor personally.

@Superspecialawesomeguy -
This is the most likely scenario.

Who cares if the writing’s good? He’s the first gay Doctor, so straight away he’s cool and sexier!

@Waddles - There sure has been. I for one was actually excited about the prospect of the female Doctor- especially after having seen Jodie Whittaker in Broadchurch (GOD DAMN, that was an incredible show), but was horribly disappointed. When the sexuality, gender and race of the character/actor is what gets touted before we have even seen an episode, alarms bells start ringing. Very. [frick]ing. Loudly. I am not hopeful. At all.

I mean good for the LGBTQ+ community, but I kinda just want the Doctor to stop wanting to bang their companions?

I'll wait and see any actual confirmation. But if this is the case it's a complete misunderstanding of regeneration. Despite the body he transforms into, he's still always the same guy. Sure, elements of his personality shift. But he's still always the same character, just with certain parts of his personality given more focus. By making him gay is saying he's always been gay. Which can't be the case, thanks to relationships like river.

I think he's speaking about the actor.

@Origame - You could see it as the Doctor always being pansexual by default since Time Lords can regenerate into different genders. BUT some regenerations lean more one way or the other, so the 1st Doctor gets infatuated with an Aztec woman, 2 was ambiguously gay with Jaime, & 3 is clearly asexual (completely going against their pansexuality or supposed straightness), so there's clearly a big variability stablished early on in the defining regenerations (the ones everyone bases their takes on).

I kinda fell off the show but I thought 13 was gay. Am I incorrect?

9th was our BIcon Doctor. First LGBT+ Dr

Weird to make a hard distinction between gay and lesbian here. Unless he's talking that he'll be more openly queer in his way of expressing himself, like 13 is gay but not really queer.

I think he means the first gay actor to play the Doctor. The Doctor's sexuality, especially since the series was brought back in 2005, seems to be relatively fluid on the rare occasions that it's addressed. He clearly had a thing for Rose, flirted quite a lot with Jack, from what I remember I think he may have been a bit flirty with Alonso too, was also a bit flirty with Amy until Rory joined them on their adventures, obviously married River, was clearly interested in Clara before he regenerated into Twelve, seemed to share some mutual subtle attraction towards Missy, and then as a woman has a thing for Yaz. Plus Twelve even says to Bill that Time Lords don't have as many "hang ups" as humans do when it comes to things like gender identity and sexual orientation.

To be honest though I've always preferred the Doctor to be a bit more asexual. He/She's hundreds, maybe even thousands, of years older than everyone else he/she spends any time with so it always feels a bit weird and uncomfortable when he/she falls in love with a human whose entire life span is less than 1% of his/her current age. Like obviously 9 and 10 both had that romantic subplot with Rose even though she was 19 years old and he was 900... Kinda creepy really, especially as The Doctor is always very much an old soul despite oftentimes having a youthful appearance - it's not like Thor in the MCU who's 1500 years old but looks and has the personality of a 30-40 year old, The Doctor is very much an old, learned and weary person on the inside. Plus with The Doctor's history of having probably outlived his/her entire family the character being less romantically inclined feels even more fitting; his/her companions are almost like surrogate children/grandchildren, not potential romantic interests.

Just off the title, I feel like this is false. Hasn't the recent Doctor had a thing with the female companion? Wasn't it suggested that the 12 Doctor had, as well?
