Matt Smith instantly became a household name when he was chosen to take over from David Tennant as Doctor Who's Time Lord in 2010. The youngest actor to play the character at that time, the House of the Dragon and Morbius star recently admitted to initially having reservations about filling such big shoes.

"I was turning up to work going, ‘F**k, I can’t do this,’" the British actor told Rolling Stone (via SFFGazette.com). "I used to phone my dad, going ‘I can’t do this.’ And he’d be like, ‘Come on, get your head down, you can.’ The show is such a jewel in the BBC crown, and has such global appeal."

"If it doesn’t work, and you’re at the centre of it, then there’s nowhere to hide. I remember walking down the street around that time and someone shouting, ‘Don’t break Doctor Who!’"

Describing the series as "f**king brilliant," Smith went on to weigh in with his take on Ncuti Gatwa becoming the latest actor to join the iconic and historic sci-fi franchise. "[Ncuti]’s going to be fabulous," the actor says, later calling David Tennant "a totally seminal Doctor" when he was informed of his return for next year's 60th-anniversary celebrations.

"Can you imagine? Because [David] was as popular as it gets, really," Smith notes. "But he was so kind to me, David, in the transition. He’s just a good bloke."

Of course, that begs the question of whether Smith would ever be tempted to return to the franchise. He's had mixed success in Hollywood thanks to flops like Terminator Genisys and Morbius, but is now heading to Westeros for the aforementioned Game of Thrones prequel series.

"Maybe, if it was the right script," he says of a possible return. "I mean, I don’t know if I’ve got too old now. It would have to be really right."

my favorite doctor

really doubt anyone would care how old he looks

classic era team up always had noticeably older doctor

Technically they can bring him back and justify his age very simply

have him come from one of the 300+ years he spent protecting trenzalore, remember he was dying of old age at the end of that

@dracula - Exactly, there's already a perfect built-in excuse if they even need one! I just hope he's back for the 60th but I doubt it

@AC1 - would be great to get all the modern doctors together

So far they have never been able to do it

10th : Hartnell was sick and could only play a minor role

20th : Tom Baker thought it was too soon after he left and they had to recast the first

30th : terrible story and no doctors are on screen together and Hartnell and Troughton were dead

50th : they couldnt agree to Eccleson’s terms

Seriously needing an explanation for age or not nobody is going to care if the doctors have some grey hairs

@dracula - Agreed, and in this day and age makeup and VFX have progressed to the point that they could probably do some minor de-aging on any given Doctor if their age is noticeably different in real life.

Having said that, I don't think it'll happen. Eccleston's back voicing Nine for Big Finish but he still seems to have issues with the BBC and I don't think he and RTD have reconciled after their falling out that led Eccleston to quit in the first place, so obviously RTD overseeing the 60th makes Eccleston's return on screen unlikely.

I think I also read somewhere that Peter Capaldi has said he doesn't want to come back because he's not a big fan of multi-Doctor stories or something and he felt like he'd done everything he wanted to do with the character during his run - which is a shame because he's my favourite Doctor of them all and by the time he left it felt like they'd barely scratched the surface on his version.

But yeah if we can get Matt back then I'd be happy with a David/Matt reunion, and maybe Jodie could be involved too (would be nice to see her in a well written episode for a change). Also I'd love it if they could at least bring back Paul McGann if not any of the Doctors prior to his, and I wouldn't be opposed to David Bradley reprising his version of the First Doctor if it made sense for the story!

@dracula - also I think relatively soon we're going to get to a point with Deep Fake technology that we could realistically get a multi Doctor story featuring every Doctor looking like their original actors, which could be pretty cool as long as it's all above board (meaning the surviving actors give their consent and are involved in some capacity, and the families of the actors who have passed away approve of their likenesses being used to depict them on screen)

Anytime this guy is cast in a film it's guaranteed to flop. He is the new Michael Fassbinder 😬

Said it once I'll say it again, Tennant was and remains my favourite Doctor. His regeneration and whole Time Lord Victorious arc has me in tears.

Smith needs to stop being so 'right script' and find the right movie.

@TheDpool - ‘cause Morbius was right script?

I’ll just leave this here.

The fact that the 60th looks like it’ll just be Tennant and Tate feels more like RTD celebrating his own work than the show itself, really needs other Doctors or companions.

@bobevanz - I put myself through the torment of watching the last Doctor so will give Ncuti a chance but my resilience is low so he needs to nail it quickly.
