'River Song' Will Return In This Year's DOCTOR WHO Christmas Special

Alex Kingston is set to reprise her role as 'River Song', the Doctor's mischievous and alluring wife/companion in Doctor Who's upcoming Christmas special episode.

The BBC have revealed that Alex Kingston is set to reprise her role as the enigmatic 'River Song' in the 2015 Doctor Who Christmas special. Kingston first appeared as Song way back in Series 4, before taking up a more significant recurring role as the Eleventh Doctor's wife and ally in Series 5-7. This will mark the first meeting between her character and Peter Capaldi's Twelfth Doctor.

“To be honest, I did not know whether River would ever return to the show, but here she is, back with the Doctor for the Christmas special,” Kingston claimed. “Steven Moffat is on glittering form, giving us an episode filled with humour and surprise guest castings. I met Peter for the first time at Monday’s read through, we had a laugh, and I am now excited and ready to start filming with him and the Doctor Who team. Christmas in September? Why not!”

The episode will be directed by Douglas Mackinnon, from a script written by showrunner Steven Moffat. “Another Christmas, another special for Doctor Who - and what could be more special than the return of Alex Kingston as Professor River Song?” Moffat added. “The last time the Doctor saw her she was a ghost. The first time he met her, she died. So how can he be seeing her again? As ever, with the most complicated relationship in the universe, it’s a matter of time...”

Kingston's Song is a divisive character with Who fans. Many adore her witty and rebellious nature, but some found her character's complicated backstory increasingly tiresome towards the end of the Smith/Moffat era. Are you happy to see her back, or is it time for the show to move on?

Series 9 of Doctor Who premieres September 19 on the BBC. The Christmas special appears to be titled 'A Spectacular Christmas', and will air on Christmas Day.

I haven't watched the adventures of the 12th Doctor past the first three or so episodes, need to catch up at some point.

This however isn't good news for me in any way, as River Song is on a pretty exclusive list of fictional character I really, really hate! >:(

River is awesome. People don't know what they want.

I've always liked the classic Doctor episodes, but I'm glad that we get more big bads now rather than always being either the Daleks or the Cybermen.

I do think they could get back to basics though.

Not everything needs to be super complicated. You've already got a time traveling Time Lord in a blue box that has two hearts that regenerates every few years.

Isn't that complicated enough?

But still I will say they do really good stories so I'm not going to complain.

I've loved these past seasons honestly.

Moffat doesn't obey rules and that's my biggest qualm with him. The rules of River's and the Doctor's relationship was explained simply: they are moving in direct opposites. Her first is his last and vice versa. By these rules "let's kill hitler" should've been the last time that dreadful character should've been seen.

I didn't mind her at first but he character got too campy after a while. And yeah, I was hoping there would be a better plot line detailing how they met. It was pretty much a letdown.

I like River in the library/forest eps. After that she got too arrogant and over the top. I'd like to see her more restrained, not so [frick]ing 'know it all'. But I love Moffat, love Capalid, I'm sure the ep will be a blast!

I do wish that Kate Winslet would have been able to play River as was the original plan. Jesus that would have been epic!

Since she is coming back, this better be when he sends her back to the 10th doctor. The lack of continuity these past handful of years has been annoying as constipation.

Doctor Who series 8 sucked. This show hasn't been the same since David Tennant said "I don't want to go".
