On tonight's Doctor Who Christmas Special, Peter Capaldi's version of The Doctor finally let go and regenerated into the 13th incarnation of the iconic Time Lord.

Back in July, it was announced that Jodi Whittaker (Attack the Block, Broadchurch) would be taking over from Capaldi as our first female Doctor, and fans were able to get a very brief glimpse of her tonight before she fell out of The TARDIS!

Before that, though, we did hear Whittaker utter her first words as the character:

So... I don't watch Doctor Who and know nothing about it.

Does they usually pass the torch to a new Doctor on a Christmas special? If so, that seems really on the nose for a death/rebirth solar cycle deity.

Haven't had a chance to watch it yet - shame because Peter Capaldi is my favourite Doctor so I would've liked to have watched his final episode live. I'm looking forward to Jodie taking over for the new run, but I'll be very sad to see Peter go.

Even the TARDIS rejects a female Doctor lol

This show hasn't been the same since Tennant and Smith left.

@BlackPhillip - Capaldi was a great Doctor but the bad writing let him down. Moffat is leaving now at least as head writer.

I already stated to myself that this was my last "Doctor Who", but I do wish Jodie the best of luck. She seems like she'll bring something unique to the show as with every actor before her.

I think this is a good new twist to shake up the show. Something different.
