Katie Cassidy was part of the Arrow cast from the beginning, and following Laurel Lance's journey to becoming Black Canary was a highlight. It took a while and there were some bumps along the way, but the end result was a badass new vigilante and a female superhero who could have easily taken centre stage in her own spinoff. Then, they killed her off in one of the show's biggest misfires.
Fortunately, Cassidy was able to return to the Arrowverse as her Earth-2 doppelgänger, but when The CW chose not to move forward with Green Arrow and the Canaries, that was it for the actress. As she's already explained, that's a decision Cassidy is perfectly fine with, but the door isn't completely closed on us seeing more of the actress in this corner of the DC Universe.
During a conversation about her role in Agent Game, we asked Cassidy if saying goodbye to Black Canary was a happy separation rather than a hard one. "Yeah, it’s not to say she’s gone. I’d happily go on any of the other shows," she confirmed. "I love those people. They’re my family. I have so much gratitude. But at some point…it’s why they say good things don’t last forever."
"You grow and evolve and move on. It’s so amazing when I run into these people I consider my family at conventions. It almost feels like how the cast of Friends probably felt. That’s how tight we were," Cassidy reflected. "I miss them and love them, but they’re all killing it too. I’m glad for them, but this is life. We’re just figuring it out [Laughs]."
It's good to know the door is open, as Black Canary's story reached an abrupt end. At the same time, it's hard to say how much more can really be done with the character, especially after Cassidy has played multiple versions of the vigilante across several DC TV shows (including Vixen and The Flash).
