BLACK LIGHTNING Is TV's Most Electrifying Hero In The New Promo For Season 2, Episode 2: "Black Jesus Blues"

Hot on the heels of a well-received freshman season, Black Lightning is back for round two and if last night's premiere was any indicator, then fans are surely in for quite an electrifying treat this coming year.

While the premiere set the stage for a number of season-long storylines, one of the biggest was undoubtedly Bill Henderson (Damon Gupton) finally uncovering Jefferson Pierce's (Cress Williams) secret and according to star Cress Williams, it doesn't sound like their relationship is going to be easily mended. He tells IGN, "It’s gonna put a huge strain on their relationship that is gonna take time to work through because this doesn’t happen in a bubble where they can put a pause on all the other things that are going on and say 'let’s sit down and talk,'" Williams says. "All the other things are going on for Jefferson with the school, with his family, with crime-fighting in general; with Henderson there’s all the things going on with Freeland and his new job, and so it’s gonna take a long time for that to work through. They work together in a professional capacity, but it’s gonna take a while before they know, do they even have a friendship? It’s hard to say at this point."

"The Book of Consequences: Chapter Two: Black Jesus Blues" - (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET) (Content Rating TBD) (HDTV)

Program information TBA

Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) is a man wrestling with a secret. As the father of two daughters and principal of a charter high school that also serves as a safe haven for young people in a New Orleans neighborhood overrun by gang violence, he is a hero to his community. Nine years ago, Pierce was a hero of a different sort. Gifted with the superhuman power to harness and control electricity, he used those powers to keep his hometown streets safe as the masked vigilante Black Lightning. However, after too many nights with his life on the line, and seeing the effects of the damage and loss that his alter ego was inflicting on his family, he left his Super Hero days behind and settled into being a principal and a dad. Choosing to help his city without using his superpowers, he watched his daughters Anissa (Nafessa Williams) and Jennifer (China Anne McClain) grow into strong young women, even though his marriage to their mother, Lynn (Christine Adams), suffered. Almost a decade later, Pierce’s crime-fighting days are long behind him…or so he thought. But with crime and corruption spreading like wildfire, and those he cares about in the crosshairs of the menacing local gang The One Hundred, Black Lightning returns — to save not only his family, but also the soul of his community.

Black Lightning features:
Cress Williams as Jefferson Pierce/Black Lightning
China Anne McClain as Jennifer Pierce
Nafessa Williams as Anissa Pierce/Thunder
Christine Adams as Lynn Pierce
Marvin "Krondon" Jones III as Tobias Whale
Damon Gupton as Inspector William Henderson
James Remar as Peter Gambi
Jordan Calloway as Khalil Payne/Painkiller

@RocknRolla - This show does what Luke Cage tries to do about 100x better, including acting.

@Battabing - yes, Black Lightning season 1 was better than Luke Cage season 1.

@Battabing - I agree on everything except for the social commentary. They say they force in relevant social issues, especially last night, is just tacky and the execution and lack of pay off feels like it's just in poor taste. I'm all for social commentary hitting close to home and addressing these necessary grievances plaguing our communities, but they ham fisted and often flat way they go about depicting it and the often neglected pay off just feels like bait with no real message or creative justification other than trying to mimic meaningful social commentary which has a impactful purpose and pulse within the context of the story. It feels more like a layer of paint than addressing anything worth while which comes back around to pay off later in the story.

@ArthurFleck - Eh, I feel like the social commentary is something that'll always be divisive. Either you get it or you don't but it usually depends on how one has seen the world and the things they've experienced.

So it's probably best for some people to just take it as part of the story rather than a critical view of real life.

Pretty strong premiere, though last year's was stronger. Still strong enough that I didn't even notice until afterwards that BL never fights anyone the entire episode. The highlight by far was the Anissa hallway fight scene, best moment last night from the CW. Very Daredevil-esque, what a thing of beauty. I also really liked the dynamic between Jefferson and Lynn, both the highs and lows- very well done and mature. Really intrigued by what's going on with Jennifer. Also Henderson finding out about BL's identity was good. I also really laughed at the church scene when Anissa shows up, hilarious that everyone had a gun on them. And man, Bill Duke is getting old but cool to see him on the show.

The bad: a couple moments in the fight choreography with Syonide and Fowdy were REALLY bad. Stuff like that usually doesn't bother me (in Arrow for example at times), but it was so obvious and poorly executed that it was a "are you serious" moment. I also was pretty disappointed about Syonide dying, especially after the tease in the season 1 finale of her make-up under the skin, killing her off like this was a real waste. Also, I found that how certain racial elements were handled this episode were jarring and sub-par to how stuff like this had been handled in the past, stuff just felt forced- it was too in your face. I thought they handled the racial stuff in season 1 much better (outside of the stupid statue scene). This and the fights though are just nitpicks.

Also, where's my boy Lala at!?!

@HeavyMetal4Life - Lala blew up...which is a bummer since they did the Tatoo Man name drop and then he was gone. I have a feeling though hell be back.

Nice to have some shows back on air. Good start to the Arrowverse overall, though Black Lightning was much stronger than Flash.

1. Black Lightning- pretty good, 8.8/10
2. Flash- alright, 6.8/10

@RocknRolla - why I gave them that score? My reason for BL is in the comment above. I can paste my reason for Flash if you want.

I feel Black Lightnings premiere was leagues better than the Flashes. Also Fowdy using a shoe as a weapon was insane... and i loved it. Like many if you guys said Anissas halleay foght scene was the highlight with its own one take moment. Also itsvgreat to see legends like Bill Duke (which again I thought he was dead), Clifton Powell and Robert Townsend show up on this show. Also the drama elements here are much more believable then say something like the Flash. Also is still gonna be 13 ep. If its 20+ I would be concerned. All in all Id say solid 9/10. Also I thought Fowdy was a goner once Whale used that harpoin on her....also have Tobius use the harpoin launcher more I feel thats untapped potential for a fight scene.....or torture scene either one works for me.
