BLACK LIGHTNING Synopsis Released; Show Will NOT Be Part Of The Arrowverse Or Winter Crossover

We won't see Black Lightning until 2018, but a lengthy synopsis sheds some light on what's to come in the series. However, there's some bad news for those of you hoping for a five-way crossover...

Black Lightning won't hit The CW until next year as part of their midseason offerings, so the following news probably won't come as a surprise. Announcing the network's fall schedule today, network chief Mark Pedowitz confirmed that the character won't play a role in this winter's DC TV crossover taking place in Supergirl, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Arrow. Don't expect to see the hero appear in any form either as he also revealed that Black Lightning will not take place in the Arrowverse.

"We do not aim to do a five-way crossover," he confirmed. "Black Lightning, at this time, is not part of the Arrowverse. It is a separate situation. But there will be a big fourth quarter crossover with all four of the shows that are on in the fall." Well, that's something at least, but definitely still a shame.

Supergirl obviously takes place on a separate Earth to the other DC TV shows but is still technically part of the Arrowverse, so it definitely sounds like Black Lightning will be completely standalone. That's not the end of the world but seems like a missed opportunity seeing as they're all on the same network.

Here's the lengthy new synopsis offering up a few more details about what to expect from the show.

Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) is a man wrestling with a secret. As the father of two daughters and principal of a charter high school that also serves as a safe haven for young people in a New Orleans neighborhood overrun by gang violence, he is a hero to his community. Nine years ago, Pierce was a hero of a different sort. Gifted with the superhuman power to harness and control electricity, he used those powers to keep his hometown streets safe as the masked vigilante Black Lightning. However, after too many nights with his life on the line, and seeing the effects of the damage and loss that his alter ego was inflicting on his family, he left his Super Hero days behind and settled into being a principal and a dad. Choosing to help his city without using his superpowers, he watched his daughters Anissa (Nafessa Williams) and Jennifer (China Anne McClain) grow into strong young women, even though his marriage to their mother, Lynn (Christine Adams), suffered. Almost a decade later, Pierce’s crime-fighting days are long behind him…or so he thought. But with crime and corruption spreading like wildfire, and those he cares about in the crosshairs of the menacing local gang The One Hundred, Black Lightning returns — to save not only his family, but also the soul of his community.

Well that's stupid. Makes me a lot less excited for that show.

@TheUnworthyThor - A shared universe isn't easy to maintain. But the problem is that WB doesn't have a grasp on the direction. Events in the flash have no repurcussions in Arrow. And so on and so forth.

They need to have every showrunner in a meeting to craft a cohesive shared TV universe to expand the stories. And allow the major events effect the other shows.

@TheUnworthyThor - That is really stupid because a winter crossover would be the perfect place to introduce a new character debuting in the spring. DuhC.

@TheUnworthyThor - Sounds like they're...wait for it... segregating Black Lightning!

@TheUnworthyThor - Yeah, it makes me not want to watch the show.

Don't get me wrong, the show sounds interesting, and I might check it out, but what got me excited was the idea of having him meet up with Flash, and being like "Another powered person, cool" and Barry could be like "You're a meta-human, but how!?" especially with the possibility with him being or Kara's earth (although at this point, it seems like he might be (sadly) on his own earth).

I am sure this will change eventually.......just like Supergirl!

@JoeMomma29 - I'm hoping this changes, a crossover between this and other CW DC shows would be a huge draw (for this show).

@JoeMomma29 - Or like Arrow changed by adding Flash. Arrow was originally supposed to have nothing superpowered, magic, or alien...just a "normal" world...

Now it has magic, aliens, ressurection, time travel, metahumans...just about every whacky thing from comics LOL. These showrunners have showed us NOTHING is set in stone.

He could make a cameo like Vixen in the future, but don't over use him

Amazing synopsis. I'm actually okay with distancing thus from the Arrowverse. If we're lucky, this could have a completely different vibe than the other CW content. Count me in.

@Tuuralihn - Yeah, that could be a major factor that I didn't think about. Still though, this is a major bummer.

I just don't see the point of this. Yeah, it still may be a very good show, but you have a perfectly well balanced universe on the CW, and you don't include this guy because...? Missing an opportunity here imo.
CaptainElrond
CaptainElrond - 5/18/2017, 7:20 AM
@KWilly - They seem to think not including these guys would confuse people, it wouldnt
PrimitiveMan
PrimitiveMan - 5/18/2017, 2:03 PM
@EdgyBillCipher - He could have easily fit in Supergirl's universe as a retired meta-human though.

@KWilly - As someone above mentioned, this could possibly be because of filming locations being different, so that's why they aren't connected. It's still disappointing though because of the possibilities of a shared universe (or in Supergirl's case, Universes) won't be their unless they (hopefully) change their minds about this.

Luke Cage re-tread thematically I assume. Probably won't be able to get as deep as Cage though when it comes to certain themes. But the character is cool and I like the actor.

I'm gonna tune in for sure.
