BLACK LIGHTNING's Executive Producer And Star Cress Williams Discuss The Show's Unique Universe

Black Lightning's executive producer Salim Akil and star Cress Williams have addressed references to the Arrowverse and the series existing in its own unique "Lightningverse." Hit the jump for details!

Black Lightning wrapped up its first season last night but that does not mean it answered all the questions raised in the first 13 episodes. One of these questions was whether the show exists in the Arrowverse, either on Earth 1 or on a different Earth in the multiverse.

This is, of course, a natural question to ask since the series airs on the same network as the four Arrowverse shows. But throughout the season there appeared to be slight nods to those shows, with references to Supergirl and Vixen the most pronounced. Additionally, Arrow star Stephen Amell has said he believes the two shows are in the same 'verse and will inevitably crossover in the future.

However, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Black Lightning executive producer Salim Akil has seemingly laid to rest any suspicions about the show existing in the wider Arrowverse:

We are in our own world. We’re not in the Arrowverse. We’re not in the Supergirl universe. We’re in the Black Lightning universe. If there’s ever a crossover, Supergirl will come to Freeland, or Green Arrow will come to Freeland. We mentioned those other characters just to have fun. I thought it was just fun to tease the fans and have fun with the fans. We’re always trying to have a conversation with the fans and we’re also trying to have fun with them, so that was part of that.

So it would seem that any nods to Arrowverse characters were just fun references for the fans to pick up on, and only that. And while Akil indicates that Jefferson Pierce would not crossover onto Arrow, he does not rule out Oliver Queen appearing on Black Lightning. Cress Williams, who plays Pierce, further indicated the separation between Black Lightning and the rest of the CW DC shows in an interview with Innovation & Tech Today

I think the producer/creator of the show, Salim [Akil], has been pretty clear that we're not really a part of the Arrowverse. I know everybody wants us to be, and I still see tweets going, 'another Arrowverse show.' But we're not part of it. I think he's even talked about it, it would be really great to create a new universe. I think he coined it the 'Lightningverse'. If we tried to fit ourselves into the Arrow-verse, we’d have to completely change the style of our show. If the Arrow-verse tries to fit into ours, it’s also changing the style of their show. They’re very different.

So there you have it! Could the two 'verses crossover at some point? Perhaps - the door is certainly open for that to happen and no one has ruled it out completely. But it seems like it will be the other DC heroes to make the jump.

Furthermore, Williams indicated that it is possible for other shows to spin-off in this Lightningverse and, if that were to happen, the shows would have a similar realism and tone as that of Black Lightning. One character in particular that Williams has his sights on is the other famous DC electricity-based hero: "I know a lot of people have been screaming about — not screaming — but chiming in that they would love to see Static Shock."

Martin Proctor did say there were several level 2 metahumans in the pods, perhaps one of these is Static Shock!? We will have to wait until season 2 to find out.

Be sure to share your thoughts on what Akil and Williams had to say, and let us know what you thought of the finale and season 1 as a whole!

@JK2point0 - these show runners comments irritate me. It’s a Berlanti comic book show. Why COULDN'T you find I good story to cross them over??

@krayzeman - Yeah. This show seems so small scale that I don't get the reason for not having it set in the Arrowverse. Supergirl makes sense since she started off on her own and the existence of Superman there makes no sense given how Arrowverse works. But here? Just have them connected. It's not like they HAVE to cross over. But now it's just more needlessly complicated TO cross them over if you ever want to.

Jaime Reyes has to be in the Show.

WHYYYYY do they have to over complicate things?? Just say the show is set on another earth and be done with it? It seems the producers don’t exactly understand the fundamentals of a comic book universe. YOU CAN MAKE ANYTHING FIT ANYWHERE! Don’t worry about tones. Arrow doesn’t need to change its tone to crossover with Black Lightning and vice versa. If they are worried about the realism being taken away from BL then they need to look themselves in the mirror. They had a person come BACK FROM THE DEAD and characters who shoot lightning out of their hands...geez

I read Akil's statement earlier in EW and what I liked was how he stated they are still operating inside their own universe aka Earth while not shutting down either the chances of there ever being a crossover down the road.

Lools like they will continue then to broaden their "Lightningverse" until then.

I don't think it is about changing the style of a show because crossovers only last for a couple of days and in total a week, then everyone goes back home and back to normal.

I could see characters from Earth-1 going to their Earth and such if the need arises. Just the chance to see all of them together fighting as one would be fun, which is the entire point behind the crossovers.

Well this was the first thing they said about Supergirl, that there was a slim chance it was going to crossover to The Flash or Arrow...and now look where we are.

It will happen eventually.

Can anyone tell me who was Lynn referring to when they were trying to save the pods and she said "I know someone who can help"?

I really enjoyed this first season. Sure there were some flaws for sure but nothing that took the enjoyment away from me. Also I'm glad they called Lala tattoo man. Also I had to look up the names Cyanide and Painkiller to find out they were legit characters. Here's for an even greater season 2.

@MrCamw1 - Painkiller ended up being pretty comic accurate looks-wise:

Makes sense. Keep it separate. Black Lightning’s got a VERY different thing going on. He’s definitely a bit more focused even compared to Arrow. I think the best thing is to let Black Lightning develop for a few seasons before even thinking about doing an actual crossover.

That said, given that Vixen and Supergirl are at least known quantities in the “Lightningverse,” whether as comic book characters or actual heroes — I think another hero they should think about introducing is Steel. In fact, I wouldn’t mind if season 2 or 3 just dealt with Stell and his enemies, considering that he dealt with the same types of issues and threats. And give Steel’s relationship with his niece, it would be a natural fit. It also helps that both Black Lightning and Steel both started out as Metropolis-based heroes.

@DerekLake - *Steel, as in John Henry Irons.
