iZOMBIE's Rob Thomas Says Series Won't Stick That Close To The Comics

"They want a new, sort of cool, female lead on The CW. They want something in the vein of Buffy or Veronica Mars. So they are asking me to write [iZombie] in the tone that I normally write. It will not be zombie apocalypse show, it will be fun, cool, smart, funny single-female lead who happens to be a zombie. She has to eat brains in order to survive. We're not sticking that close to the comics, the thing we're taking from the comic is this mid-20s female zombie who eats brains and gets the memories of the dead. But we put her in a coroners office so there's a case of the week, each week where she gets snippets of memories of the deceased and tries to solve the crime."

That's Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas discussing his adaptation of Chris Roberson and Michael Allred's comic book iZOMBIE with IGN. Sounds like fans of the book shouldn't expect a page-by-page reconstruction of the fan favorite title. It's more of a conceptual, re-imagining of the source material, similar to AMC's The Walking Dead. But that's were the similarities between the two shows will end as Thomas makes it clear that his series is not set in a zombie apocalypse.

I think that's the point. They can capitalize on the CBEntertainment boom and they don't have to worry about fanboys who are salty over not respecting the source material. They can make it what they want it to be.

It's always a little disheartening when you know they're just trying to walk in someone else's footsteps too. What's the point though if they aren't going to be original and fresh?

I read the series and to be turthful, it would be really hard to bring it into tv. I do hope that they try and keep the core figures in the pilot. A Zombie, her best girl-friend is a ghost from the 60's and her best guy-friend is a gay were-terrier who falls in love with Gwen brother.

I have never read this series, but I will say that it is usually not a good thing to stray from the source material. Although, the Walking Dead has done it successfully.

I liked this type of idea better when it was called CHEW.

If that's what they are going for, then it sounds like a similar tone to Warm Bodies.

I don't think this show is going to make it past it's second season.

So it's a feminized Warm Bodies using a title for the sole purpose of name recognition to attract part of the audience.

Well he refused to do good rocknroll in matchbox 20, why would he stick the source here either?

I know Warm Bodies was very feminine already; what it lacked was the female being the primary driver of the narrative. This show seems to correct that issue.

Did they ask Rob Thomas about a new Matchbox 20 album :)
